For the greater common good, this item is limited to one per customer. We appreciate your cooperation.

On February 12, 1830, Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr. – widely considered the father of modern bourbon – was born in Columbus, Kentucky. Orphaned as a baby, Taylor was adopted by Edmund Haynes Taylor Sr. and was raised in Louisiana by his great-uncle, Zachary Taylor . After attending the Boyer’s French School in New Orleans, Taylor moved back to Kentucky and matriculated from the B. B. Sayer’s Academy. Following in the footsteps of his adopted father, Taylor became involved in banking and came to the aid of several Kentucky distilleries that were suffering from Reconstruction.

In 1869, Taylor purchased a small distillery situated on the banks of the Kentucky River. Christened the distillery OFC Distillery, Taylor began renovating and modernizing the plant – he purchased copper fermentation tanks, new grain grinding equipment and unique, columnar stills. During his tenure, Taylor also implemented several innovative distilling techniques, including aging whiskey in climate-controlled rickhouses.

At the time, an overwhelming number of distilleries were still not aging their bourbon. In order to make their spirits palatable, some distillers and retailers added juices and syrups to sweeten their bourbon, while others added acid and tobacco to give their bourbon its signature amber hue.

Old Fashioned Sour Mash

In the early 2000s, at a gathering of distillery retirees, a method was recounted for making “Old Fashioned Sour Mash” whiskey. Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr. was known to use this technique in the late 1800s. Taylors technique involved allowing the mash to sour naturally for days before distillation. Distilled in 2002, this bourbon is a modern version of this old fashioned method. Using Taylor’s original souring process, the result is a bourbon of character and body like none other today.

Tasting Notes

The flavor begins with a floral aroma and an undertone of freshly baked bread. The palate is unusually fresh and light, like honey drizzled over toast. There is a clean finish with hints of leather.

Bourbon is the second powerhouse in the whisky world and its made in America primarily from corn. Unlike in Scotland and Ireland where whisky is made primarily from the same grain, American whiskeys are often made from a mix of different grains, known as mash. In fact, its quite common for an American whiskey to made up of corn, wheat, rye and barley.

For bourbon to be called bourbon, it must be made from a minimum of 51% corn, must be distilled to an ABV of no more than 80%, and must be aged in new charred-oak barrels. The charred-oak barrels and corn are easily the biggest factors that differentiates bourbon from other whiskys, as it gives the whiskey a much sweeter flavor and smoother texture than barley.

How Much Is Eh Taylor Small Batch

As with all Buffalo Trace Distillery bourbons, price is more conceptual than concrete. Buffalo Trace’s SRP for Small Batch is $40, which is a fine deal for a premium bourbon like this. More often than not, you’ll pay close to twice that price, per spirits pricing platform BoozApp. While you may not consider $80 a fair price for bourbon that’s ostensibly costs $40, that is roughly the going rate anything below that price is in must-buy territory for most bourbon drinkers.

Warehouse C Tornado Surviving

On Sunday evening, April 2, 2006, a severe storm with tornado strength winds tore through central Kentucky, damaging two Buffalo Trace Distillery aging warehouses. One of the damaged warehouses was Warehouse C, a treasured warehouse built by Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr. in 1881. It sustained significant damage to its roof and north brick wall, exposing a group of aging bourbon barrels to the elements. That summer, the exposed barrels waited patiently while the roof and walls were repaired, while being exposed to open skies and the central Kentucky climate. When these barrels were tasted years later, it was discovered that the sun, wind, and elements they had experienced created a bourbon unmatched in rich flavors. This was truly a special batch of barrels, and though the distillery does not hope for another tornado, it feels lucky to have been able to release this once-in-a-lifetime product.

Tasting Notes

On the nose, the aroma of dried fig and cloves initially jumps from the glass. This is followed by baking spice and an oaky dryness for balance. A small sip fills the mouth with flavors of jam-like fruit, vanilla and a touch of smoke. The finish quickly builds in dark spices with hints of tobacco, leaving a lasting final impression.

Is Eh Taylor Small Batch Rare

Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch Bourbon

Yes and no. It is the most accessible and affordable of all E.H. Taylor expressions, but none of the E.H. Taylor expressions are associated with accessibility or affordability. Because Small Batch is the cornerstone item in the brand’s permanent collection, you will find it more often than more limited one-off expressions from the brand, but it’s unlikely your liquor store will have bottles of Small Batch year-round. Speaking of limited one-offs, they take the blame for making good ol’ Small Batch harder to find. Warehouse C Tornado Surviving Bourbon, Cured Oak, 18-Year Marriage and other one-offs drive collectors mad, and the more run-of-the-mill bottles look glossier for it. If you’re interested in trying it, we recommend asking your local liquor store owner about availability, or jumping on a bottle if found for a fair price. What’s a fair price, you ask?

Eh Taylor Jr Warehouse C Bourbon

KENTUCKY STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY

This ten-year-old Bottled in Bond bourbon was aged in Warehouse C, built by Col. Taylor in 1885, and the barrel warehouse he was most proud of the final piece in his model distillery. Like some of the previous releases, this one-time-only bottling of E.H. Taylor, Jr Warehouse C Bourbon is very limited.

The barrels in the E.H. Taylor Jr. Warehouse C release were all aged for ten years in the center of Warehouse C, with half of them coming from the 2nd floor and the other half from the 5th floor. The second floor is an outstanding aging floor for older barrels. The ricks are very tight, making it slow and difficult to put in new barrels. The floor is very dry, making it ideal for 10 to 15-year-old products. The fifth floor of Warehouse C is a well-rounded aging floor with windows all the way around, providing excellent air flow throughout the floor. There is ample sunlight through these windows which helps heat up the warehouse and the aging process.

The ideal aging locations for these barrels led to a wonderful flavor combination, with a nose of cherry cobbler with rum sauce and a hint of oak a palate of cherry cola, vanilla bean and toasted oak and a finish that is long and lingering with a hint of spearmint, coffee, raisin bread and anise.

As a brand, Buffalo Trace is relatively new. Yes the distillery that produces their whole range of products has been standing for centuries, but it was not until Sazerac purchased the grounds in 1992 that they began to build the core line of products you see today.

Buffalo Trace bourbon came around in 1999 followed by a slow and steady growth of labels that Sazerac either scooped up or invented .

Along the lines of labels that Buffalo Trace created recently was the Colonel E.H. Taylor line. First bottled in 2011, the idea for this brand extension was to honor the man who is most credited with creating the Bottled in Bond movement, Edmund Haynes Taylor.

Throughout the 10 years since then, the EHT line produces 3 main products as well as 2 annual releases EHT Barrel Proof and a special experiment or noteworthy release.

How Old Is Eh Taylor Small Batch

Colonel E.H. Taylor Seasoned Wood Bourbon Review

E.H. Taylor Small Batch does not bear an age statement, but because it’s a Bottled-in-Bond spirit, we know it’s at least 4 years old, but more likely between 6 and 10 years old based on flavor profile and price. The whiskey isn’t typically associated with youthful bourbon flavors, and Buffalo Trace’s namesake bourbon is a blend of 6-plus-year-old whiskey, lending credence to the idea that E.H. Taylor Small Batch spends longer than 4 years in a barrel.
