How To Prepare Gin And Tonic

Can I Make Tonic Water At Home

How To Make a Gin and Tonic

Many types of soda are fun to make at home. However, tonic water is one that should always be purchased from a reputable manufacturer. Due to the serious side effects of cinchonism, it can be harmful to make your own tonic syrup from cinchona bark because it is impossible to control the amount of quinine. It is generally safe to purchase a premade tonic syrup if you follow the company’s recommended dilution to make tonic water. As an alternative, you can make quinine-free tonic syrup at home.

Adapting The Gin & Tonic Formula

While this provides a good general guide, with such a versatile spirit one size does not fit all. While you could apply the measurements and method of the above calculation each time you mix up your favourite drink, you have to consider the variation of flavours of each gin.

But really, there are no limits or wrong answers when it comes to gin adventures. There are so many amazing gins out there, the best thing to do is experiment with different garnishes, tonics and even glasses to find your perfect match and the good news is, youll have plenty of fun doing it.

What Kind Of Gin Should I Use To Make A Gin And Tonic

When making gin and tonics, choose a gin that is mid- to high-shelf. A London dry gin , Plymouth or Bombay work well. London dry gins will be more straightforward in flavor while Plymouth gin will be a bit more aromatic. Weve also used Bombay Sapphire and loved it, but we really enjoy Sapphires extra spiciness.

How Many Calories In A Gin And Tonic:

I was surprised to see that a LOT of people are interested in knowing exactly how many calories are in a gin and tonic.

Gin and tonic calories: there are about 125 calories in one gin and tonic .

A single 2-ounce shot of gin has about 125 calories in it and since we recommend that you use diet tonic water, there are next to zero additional calories inside this cocktail outside of the little bit of lime juice that is squeezed in.

All Im saying is that I would MUCH rather have a gin and tonic over a 100 calories beer ANY DAY OF THE WEEK!

Remember that the tonic water should also be quite cold. There is some discussion as to how tonic water should be served. Here we will tell you what the correct way is:

Pour the tonic water by placing the spout of the bottle directly on the rim of the glass. Tilt the glass a little, so that the water slides inside the glass and does not lose gas.

How To Make Gin And Tonic Spanish Style

In Spain, a variation on the drink called Gin-Tonic has become popular. This differs from a traditional gin and tonic as it is served in a balloon glass or coupe glass with plenty of ice and a garnish tailored to the flavors of the gin.

The drink could be fruit-based but the use of herbs and vegetables, reflecting the gins botanicals, is increasingly popular.

The balloon glass is used because the aromas of the drink can gather at its opening for the drinker to more easily appreciate.

The popularity of this variation of the gin and tonic has led to the establishment of Gin-Tonic bars, in which customers can choose their preferred gin, tonic, and garnish from a menu.

So you can mix things up and go Spanish by serving in a balloon glass and with some fresh rosemary or thyme or other fragrant herbs!

Of All The Gins That I Have Tried Here Are My Favorites In Order:

  • Malfy Con Limone Gin admittedly this one is very new to me but it QUICKLY jumped to the top of my list. It seems to be widely available and just has SUCH a smooth taste. They also make it without the lemon flavor but just trust me and get it with lemon!
  • Wild Roots Gin this is a local to Oregon gin and not all that widely available. BUT if you are able to get your hands on it, Im OBSESSED with the grapefruit flavored gin of theirs!
  • Viva City Native Gin this is another local gin because Im a sucker for a good local distillery.
  • Bombay Sapphire when all else fails, I go for Bombay. Its widely available and most bars serve it. Its a good classic gin to have on hand.
  • Hendricks another classic and easy to find gin. Im also a big sucker for the Hendricks packaging 🙂
  • Empress Gin Ive bought this a few times and always really enjoy it. PLUS it has a beautiful and fun light purple color that I find particularly nice when entertaining.
  • PLEASE let me know if you have a favorite. Were always looking for new kinds to try.

You May Shed Some Tears If You Drink Gin Every Night

Certain types of alcohol have earned certain types of reputations. Tequila makes you crazy, beer makes you have a belly, and gin makes you cry. In the case of gin, this old wives’ tale may actually be true. A 2017 study conducted by researchers from Public Health Wales and King’s College London in the United Kingdom surveyed about 30,000 men and women between the ages of 18 and 24 to determine how different types of alcohol affected their emotions and behavior.

Those who drank spirits, including gin, rum, and whiskey, were more likely to experience negative emotions. These emotions also spilled over into feelings of aggression. While only 2.5 percent of the participants experienced aggro after drinking red wine, a third of those who drank spirits felt this way.

Of course, there could’ve been a few factors at play. “Emotions experienced could also be related to when the alcohol is drunk, the levels of alcohol within each beverage type and the different compounds found in different drinks,” the report revealed. Still, gin tears seem to be a very real phenomenon when you drink gin every night.

How To Garnish A Classic Gin And Tonic

How to make the best Gin and Tonic

I like to serve my gin tonics in the style of a Spanish Gin & tonic. In a large wine glass with the following garnishes for flavor:

    • Lime wedges
    • Fill your glass with ice, all the way to the top.
    • Add your gin and the tonic water.
    • Squeeze two lime wedges into your cocktail and stir well to combine.
    • Serve immediately, garnished with a sprig of mint if desired.

How Do You Drink Tonic Without Alcohol

Tonic on its own doesnt contain alcohol. However, it isnt the best on its own in my opinion. I love layering it with other flavors like this non-alcoholic gin.

My friend Eden of Sugar and Charm also takes it to a floral level with her rose water gin and tonic. You could easily make it non-alcoholic as well.

You can simply enjoy tonic water on its own but adding in some other flavors really helps make it more enjoyable.

How To Make The Cranberry Gin And Tonic

One reason the gin and tonic remains a classic is the ease at which it can be built in a rocks glass. In just a minute or two you can build your cocktail and sip away.

To make your Thanksgiving cocktail add a bit of syrup to the bottom of a rocks glass or a balloon glass. Add gin, and a squeeze of lime juice. Stir, fill with ice and top with a high-quality tonic water like Fever-Tree or Q Mixer tonics.

Garnish with a few fresh or frozen cranberries for color and a rosemary sprig, spanked across the wrist.

Whats The Best Tonic To Use For Gin And Tonics

I prefer the tonic water sold in the smaller, single-serving bottles. The tonic will be fresh and you wont lose any fizz. A lot of people swear by Schweppes, but we cant say we have noticed a difference enough to specify on that one. We particularly enjoy the Fever Tree and Q tonics.

For a lower calorie cocktail, you can use light tonic. Light tonic doesnt have as much flavor as regular, but it does help to lower the calories. You can also water regular tonic down with a little seltzer water or club soda.

How to Make Gin and Tonic

Start with this recipe, and whatever you do, don’t forget the lime.

The gin and tonic just might be the easiest cocktail of all. It’s a two-ingredient drinkmade from a combination of, you guessed it, gin and tonicwith a simple but essential citrus garnish. But as with every recipe with minimal components, the quality of each element is extremely important. Here we’re sharing our classic recipe for making a gin and tonic and explaining the elements of the drink. Use this basic formula to test drive some different gins, find the tonic that pairs best with your favorite gin and decide what glass, how much ice you like, and how you’ll garnish your G& T.

It’s sometimes called the gin tonic, in the UK it’s often referred to as a G& T. Whatever name you give it, the gin and tonic is a classic cocktail and a mixed drink that doesn’t require a cocktail shaker, muddling spoon, or other mixology equipment. It doesn’t even require a special glass like a does. It’s a refreshing cold drink on a hot summer night, when a more boozy cocktail would be too much. In fact, there are those who assert the G& T is a summer drink but there are othersmany others, actuallywho believe this classic is a refreshing sip any time of the year.

When You Drink Gin Every Night This Is What Happens To Your Body

Whether you drink gin every night in a martini or mix it with tonic water, you may be wondering what this alcohol does to your body. First, it’s important to know what gin even is. While straight gin may not taste overly flavorful, it is flavored. Sam Carter, senior brand ambassador for gin distillery Bombay Sapphire, explained to Good Housekeeping that gin is made from and flavored by juniper. While gin can contain other natural ingredients, such as wheat and rye, juniper must be the plant predominately used. Otherwise, it’s not gin.

There are different types of gin on the market, but, according to Carter, London Dry Gin is of the highest quality. “It’s kind of gin in its purest form,” he explained. In order to be classified as London Dry Gin, the distillery “can’t add any artificial flavourings or additives after distillation.” You can also buy “distilled” gin. Like London Dry Gin, this gin is, of course, distilled. It differs from it’s superior cousin, though, because flavorings are permitted after it’s distilled.

So, now that you’ve aced Gin 101, let’s move on to the health portion. When you drink gin every night, this is what happens to your body.

How Strong Is A Gin And Tonic

The gin and tonic can be as light or as strong as you want to make it. The strength is controlled by the amount of tonic you pour. With the average 5-ounce pour of tonic and an 80-proof gin, the drink weighs in around 10 percent ABV . It’s a very casual drink, which is why it’s a favorite to serve at dinner.

Using Herbs In Your Gin And Tonic

Here are some great herbs and additions to lift your gin!

    Lavender

Lavender is so much more than your aunties preferred soap scent. In moderation, lavender is warm and wildly aromatic, a scent memory of Provencal summers.

If you like your gin and tonic garnishes on the floral side, dont stop there: edible flowers are also an increasingly popular and visually impressive garnish.

    Rosemary

Powerful, robust rosemary adds a deliciously savory note to any G& T. Thanks to the herbs piney flavor profile, it also plays very well alongside the juniper.

    Cinnamon Sticks

The sweet spice of cinnamon is a potent flavor addition to your G& T, so be sure youre using a gin that can hold its own. Just dont be tempted to use your cinnamon as a swizzle stick you dont want your G& T becoming under-carbonated after a few idle stirs.

    Lemon Thyme

If youre a tippler whos always come down on the lemon side in the great garnish debate, then consider adding a few sprigs of lemon thyme to your G& T. The end result should be equal parts of lemony and herbaceous.

    Perfect Gin Tonic Recipe

How to Make a Gin and Tonic

It seems that no matter what cocktail party, wedding, reunion or any other social event that I go to, the one mainstay I keep on seeing is the Gin and Tonic. I remember when I was in college, we used to have Gin and Tonic Parties. I dont even remember what Gin we used or how we made them but I do remember that we used to feel so grown up and sophisticated. Back them, the perfect gin and tonic was anything that would get me drunk. I was so young and so uninformed!

Well, now I am at least one of those things and I still love to drink Gin and Tonics. These drinks have become a staple in our household mainly because they are the one alcoholic drink that my wife and I both enjoy.

The Gin and Tonic was first born in India by the British East India Company in the 1700s. Malaria was persistent in that area of the world at that time and it was found that quinine was something that could prevent and treat it. Unfortunately, quinine is disgusting. So, they needed to find something that make it go down a little more easy. The soldiers in India were given a gin ration anyways and it wasnt long before they started mixing the quinine with that and other things that they have on hand such as sugar, water and limes. Mary Poppins said it best: A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. A zig here and a zag there and suddenly we had 21-year-olds in college pretending they were real adults.

Garnishes arent just there to add visual interest they can elevate the overall drinking experience through fragrance and flavour. Juniper-forward gins will benefit from traditional garnishes like limes and lemons, as their acidity will help cut through the berrys signature bitterness, while ginger will be a gentler option for gins with more delicate or floral notes. Feel free to experiment with spices and herbs as well.

What Are The Best Ingredients For A Gin And Tonic

First off, theres the gin. London dry gin is the go-to style for a gin and tonic. Despite its name, London dry can come from anywhere in the world. While the exact flavors vary slightly, you can expect your classic London dry to have juniper, coriander and citrus notes. Its clean and brightexactly what you want in a gin and tonic. Beefeater, Plymouth and Bombay Sapphire are three common brands.

You can also opt for pink gin to make your G& T. Pink gin is fruitier thanks to the addition of red fruits like strawberry, raspberry and currants. If you love juicy fruit flavors, swap pink gin for London dry. Look for pink gin from Beefeater, Gordons and others.

Oh, and your options dont stop with the gin. There are a few other easy ways to put a spin on a gin and tonic. The simplest personal touch you can add is the garnish. The classic G& T calls for a wedge of fresh lime, but you can use a few cucumber slices, a mix of grapefruit and orange slices, summer berries or fresh herbs from your garden.

You can also pick up a bottle of flavored tonic water to introduce another layer of flavor to your cocktail.

Pour The Ice Into The Glass

Remember, the bigger the ice cubes, the better. You use ice to keep your gin and tonic cold, not to melt it and ruin your drink.

Use enough ice, without going over the rim of the glass. Depending on the size of the cubes and the glass, you will need between three and five cubes to prepare your gin and tonic.

Ideally, you should use solid ice cubes without a hole in them.

You Can Improve Your Heart Health If You Drink Gin Every Night

How To Make The Perfect Gin and Tonic

“As with other types of alcohol, there is some evidence to suggest that moderate consumption can help reduce the risk of heart attacks…,” nutritionist Jackie Lynch confirmed to Good to Know. Now, that doesn’t mean you can throw back martini after martini and expect to strengthen your heart. “This relates to one small glass per day, as studies have shown that as you increase your intake to three glasses per day the risk of cardiovascular disease increases dramatically,” the nutritionist continued. She further recommended opting for a “single rather than a double measure” of gin to be safe.

Although a nightly gin martini can improve your heart health, a gin and tonic may not, due to the added sugar. Because an excess consumption of sugar has been linked to heart disease, you’re going to want to avoid adding any sweet mixers to your measure of gin if you choose to drink gin every night.
