Tennessee whiskey is a straight whiskey produced in Tennessee. Even though it is technically a bourbon whiskey, producers of Tennessee whiskey do not use the term bourbon to describe their products.
The vast majority of Tennessee whiskey producers filter their whiskey using the Lincoln Country Process. This process involves running the whiskey through charcoal chips to remove impurities before it is placed in a barrel for aging. This process gives the whiskey a smoother flavor.
Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey, also called Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey when aged for two years, must be produced in Kentucky. About 95% of the worlds bourbon supply is made in Kentucky, so when you open a bourbon, it is very likely to have come from Kentucky.
What Percent Alcohol Is Moonshine
Moonshine typically has an alcohol by volume of 40 percent, although it can sometimes have an ABV of 60 percent to 80 percent. The percentage of alcohol in a drink may be converted to proof by multiplying it by two. As a result, 40% ABV is equal to 80 proof. The distillation process is critical in determining the amount of alcohol present in a spirit.
What About All Those Other Bourbon Descriptions On The Label
Were glad you asked! Again, as long as the spirit follows the ABCDEFG guide we outlined above, its technically and legally bourbon. But there are a lot of other things you might see on labels that can be confusing.
Straight Bourbon Whiskey In order to be labeled as such, it has to be aged for at least two years. If its aged for less than four years, an age statement has to appear on the label.
Kentucky Straight Bourbon Same requirements as above, but it has to have been distilled in and aged for at least one year in Kentucky.
Bottled-In-Bond After rectifiers messed up the general population with additives and fake whiskey, Uncle Sam stepped in with one of the first consumer protection laws, the Bottled-in-Bond act, that mandated a minimum of four years aging at exactly 100 proof in one season by a single distiller before being aged in a government bonded warehouse.
Barrel Proof / Cask Strength / Barrel Strength Bourbon These are all interchangeable descriptions that generally refer to bourbon that has not been watered down between leaving the barrel and entering the bottle.

Is Scotch The Same As Whiskey

This is because Tennessee Whiskey follows the legal guidelines for bourbon production and there isnt a law stating bourbon can only be made in Kentucky.
But Tennesseans and Kentuckians both dont want it to be called bourbon due to pride and whatever else.
How Are Bourbon And Rye Whiskey Similar
Bourbon and rye whiskey share many things in common, such as maximum distillation proof and aging in new charred-oak barrels. They are both usually made in column stills, although thats not a requirement. Many bourbon brands, such as Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, and Woodford Reserve, have a rye-whiskey sibling thats made at the same distillery, though not always: Bulleit rye, for example, comes from MGP Distillery in Indiana, while the brands bourbon is all made in Kentucky.
In addition, bourbon and rye can taste quite similar depending on their recipes. If you compare a bourbon with a 49% rye mash bill to a similarly aged rye with a 49% corn mash bill, you might find the two to be nearly indistinguishable in flavor terms.

This might be common knowledge for some, but it’s worth a refresher before you go out and buy a bottle. Let’s start with a burning question we answered back in 2008: what makes a whiskey bourbon?
The law. While knocking back a dram of bourbon is a decidedly carefree exercise, making it is exceedingly technical and requires that the whiskey meet a rigid set of criteria. The Federal Standards of Identity for Bourbon stipulate what is and what isnât bourbon. For a whiskey to call itself bourbon, its mash, the mixture of grains from which the product is distilled, must contain at least 51% corn.
