Sagamore Spirit Straight Rye
Historically, Maryland has been the center of rye whiskey production in the United States. This has changed over the years as leading rye brands moved to other parts of the country or have been sold off to other distilleries. The team behind Sagamore Spirit is hoping to make Maryland the home of rye whiskey production once more.
Sagamore Spirit is produced at a large waterfront distillery in the heart of Maryland using copper stills. The facility isnt just a working distillery, it is a tasting center that educates people about the history of Marylands rye whiskeys.
The distillerys straight rye whiskey is a delicious spirit with a wide range of flavors and aromas. The nose is surprisingly sweet with honey, jasmine, peach, and hints of vanilla. The palate is diverse with plenty of rye, vanilla, and spice, along with hints of tobacco and other fruits. The finish is quite smooth. A delicious drop worth tracking down.
Burnside Oregon Oaked Rye
Eastland Distilling in Portland is putting to use a unique and indigenous type of oak which many whiskey drinkers have first come across via Westland Distillery: Quercus Garryana. Here the distillery takes a blend of rye whiskeys and finishes the combination in the garry oak. This imparts some of the distinctive and signature flavor notes from that wood variety, and offers a fresh take on the category.

What Is The Difference Between 180 And 80 Proof Moonshine
The greater the speed with which the bubbles dissipate, the greater the amount of alcohol present. Small bubbles will develop in a bottle of 80 proof Moonshine after it has been shaken for a few seconds and will dissipate after a few more seconds. In contrast, a bottle of 180 proof Moonshine will have enormous bubbles that will evaporate almost immediately.

What Rye Whiskey Is Made From
Post-prohibition, rye came to be known as that bastard whiskey. This name was earned due to the spicy kick and tingly burn provided by the main ingredient: rye grain.
On top of the rye, rye whiskeys are often filled out by corn, malted barley, or wheat. Rye whiskeys are aged in charred new oak barrels, giving the spirit its trademark amber color and contributing to the bold flavors rye whiskeys are known for.
Historically, rye whiskeys were 100% rye. This was known as Monongahela style. We can feel the gun-metal grey whiskers growing on our upper lips just thinking about drinking a 100% rye whiskey.
But after prohibition, the strong flavor of rye whiskey fell out of vogue in favor of more mellow vodkas, bourbons, and other whiskeys. Modern rye whiskeys still have a lot of rye grain in the mix, but these days its often balanced with corn.
Note: While rye whiskeys have no aging minimum, straight rye whiskeys must be aged at least 2 years. If theres no age statement on a straight rye whiskey label, buyer beware.
In addition, straight rye whiskey can never be color corrected. And there are a few other terms to get straight before getting into straight rye whiskey:
- Barrel proof means your rye whiskey isnt watered down to the typical 40% ABV.
- Single barrel means your whiskey has been bottled from one barrel, never blended, presenting all the unique characteristics of the particular barrel it called home in its younger years.
Is Rye Whiskey Gluten
All whiskey, including rye, is generally regarded as gluten-free. While they may derive from grain that contains significant quantities of gluten, the distillation process usually removes all traces of the protein.
In most cases, people with gluten intolerance shouldnt experience any ill effects. That being said, it is occasionally, albeit rarely, reported that people with more severe conditions like Celiacs disease have had some complaints. These are usually mild but it isnt unheard of.

The 10 Best Rye Whiskeys Money Can Buy
If you have a weak spot for a liquor thats spicy, bold, and with a heritage thats as American as apple pie, rye whisky is probably a drink youre already very familiar with. Back before distillers discovered that distilling with corn and barley malt was much easier in most states than distilling with rye , rye whiskey was one of the most popular drinks around. The peak of its popularity came in the 1940s and 1950s after that, sales began to plummet, with increasing numbers of drinkers favoring the smoothness of bourbon whiskey over the spicy kick of rye. Then, in the 2010s, a new generation of distillers began to revisit rye, resulting in a spike in demand and a new crop of high-quality rye whiskies to try. Some of those ryes have enough heat to stand up to cocktails, while others are elegant enough to deserve to be sipped alone. Heres our pick of the 10 best rye whiskies currently available.

Hudson Whiskey Ny The Xseries: Cider Cask Rye
Average Price:Distillery Only
This new entry in the xSeries from Hudson takes their standard rye and finishes it with some apple. The juice is loaded into apple-cider-cured barrels for a final maturation before batching, proofing, and bottling.
This opens with a lovely and almost warm cinnamon-spiked apple cider next to apple blossoms, apple core, and then a rush of rye grains, rich caramel, fresh apricot, and hints of vanilla. The palate really delivers on the cinnamon sticks soaked in apple cider as the florals drive the taste towards a hint of clove, wet cedar, and chewy apple tobacco. The apricot sweetness pops in on the back end as the apple tobacco marries the hot cinnamon sticks on the almost dry and long finish.
It always amazes me how well apple and rye go together and that theres not more of it . I wish there was more of this rye but its already gone for the year. We can only hope that Hudson brings it back next year because its delicious.

Rye whiskeys moment has arrived. The freewheeling category is seeing an impressive amount of innovationand excellent bottlings to boot.
Whats the appeal? While the whiskey still needs to be made with at least 51% rye grain to call itself rye, so much else is open to interpretationand distilleries are taking full advantage of that flexibility. Some producers are softening that rye with corn, barley or wheat, while others zip the amount of rye up to 100% for maximum spicy effect.
In addition, an increasing amount of attention has been paid to where and how that rye is grown, as producers make the case that the grain is particularly expressive. Its the only American spirits category with terroir-specific designations: Empire rye, Minnesota and as of July 3, 2021, Indiana rye became part of the mix too. Of course, rye doesnt need to be made in America look to Canada for plenty of options. Scandinavian ryes provide some intrigue and are distinguished by rich flavors that suggested toasted pumpernickel and campfire-adjacent smores.
