Blended Scotch is a blend of malt whiskey and grain whisky. The whiskies must be matured in oak barrels for at least three years, and if a bottle bears an age statement, such as “8 Years Old,” it signifies that the youngest whiskey in the mix is that old. While most blends contain two or more types of whiskey, some include only one: no-age-statement Blended Scotch can also be called Superblend.
The traditional blending process starts with finding brands that have similar characteristics. For example, if you like Highland Park 12-year-old, then other highland park products might also taste good to you. Once the brands are selected, their different styles are mixed together in defined proportions. Finally, the resulting mixture is aged in new American oak barrels for a minimum of three years, which is how it becomes mature enough to be called Scotch whiskey. Most blenders choose to extend this aging time up to eight years or more.

This might be common knowledge for some, but it’s worth a refresher before you go out and buy a bottle. Let’s start with a burning question we answered back in 2008: what makes a whiskey bourbon?

The notable exception is that Irish whiskey can be matured in wooden casks other than oak. This can seriously influence the flavor profile, but the majority opt for oak due to its hard-wearing and porous nature.
Not so much a rule, more a tradition, Irish whiskey tends to be triple distilled, giving it what some consider a smoother, more accessible taste than its Scottish counterpart, which is generally distilled twice.
