What Is Considered The Best Tequila

Best White: Arette Blanco Tequila

WHAT IS THE BEST TEQUILA?

I like tequilas that have a strong family history and choose to do the right thing for the land and the people, says Dean Hurst, beverage director for Datz Restaurant Group. Each bottle is made with care in the town of Tequila, right outside Guadalajara. The brand is still run by the Orendain brothers, who are descendants of some of the oldest tequila producers in the country. That said, the tequila still holds the same quality it did generations ago, with flavors of jackfruit, lime zest, and green pepper.

Give your margarita some punch with Arette Blanco, a steal for a cheaper tequila, says Hurst. He also recommends the distillerys reposado because it’s a great sipper and adds complexity to the paloma cocktail.

Hope Ray, a bartender at The Holler in Bentonville, Arkansas, reaches for Agavales Blanco because it often runs under $20, so you cant go wrong with this in your home bar. The budget bottle clocks in at a spicy 110 proof, so it’ll add a little heat in each sip. Because it’s on the lower end of the price scale, it’s not as elegant in cocktails as some other options are.

That said, it makes a great margarita and an easy shooter, says Ray. If you want a crowd-pleasing bottle, this is the one. Consider putting it in the freezer before enjoying. By chilling it down, the cold temperatures will balance out the higher-proof burn of making shots with this tequila.

Best Cheap: Sauza Silver Tequila

Budget tequilas are tricky, and it is very easy to get burned when you buy the wrong one. Sauza Silver is one that wont let you down or leave your mouth on fire. It may not be as smooth as top-shelf tequilas, but it is one of the best affordable options, and its in nearly every liquor store.

Sauza is distilled in the town of Tequila and right across the street from Jose Cuervo. While both brands are famous for their cheap gold tequilas, Sauzas 100 percent blue Weber agave silver tequila is a smoother option for tequila shots when you want to save money. It makes a nice margarita as well, particularly when blended with fruits like strawberry and pineapple.

Bottle Size: 750 milliliters | Tasting Notes: Fresh agave, fiber, pepper | ABV: 40% | Region: Los Valles, Jalisco

Silver tequilas are unaged and the most affordable of any brands lineup. Tequila Herradura offers a brilliant example that should be almost anywhere you look. It is premium, but not priced out of reach for the average drinker, and it always produces a great tequila cocktail.

Bottle Size: 750 milliliters | Tasting Notes: Cooked agave, citrus, black pepper | ABV: 40% | Region: Tequila Valley, Jalisco

Casa Noble Anejo Tequila

Casa Noble

When anejo tequila is done right, its at once rich and flavorful, smooth yet complex. Thats what you get from Casa Nobles anejo blend, aged in new French oak for two full years with notes of dried fruit, toasted oak, creamy butterscotch, chocolate and spice. An undertone of sweet cooked agave recalls this tequilas fresh Blanco roots.

Like all of Casa Nobles offerings, this one is certified organic, and took home the Best Añejo Tequila prize at the 2017 World Tequila Awards. Best sipped slow for a warm, inviting mouthfeel.

The Cuervo family has been in the tequila game since 1795, and to celebrate the companys bicentennial, it created a limited family reserve. For this special offering, the choicest agaves are distilled and tucked away for at least three years in the familys private cellar. Then, before being bottled , every batch is tested by a Cuervo family member. How Much Tequila Do You Put In A Margarita

For a single margarita, a 1.5-ounce shot of tequila is standard. It is typically equal to the total volume of the other two ingredients . For instance, the classic margarita formula is three parts tequila, two parts triple sec, and one part lime juice. This is adjusted to taste, pouring more triple sec for a sweeter margarita or extra lime to increase the tartness.

When sizing the margarita up to a pitcher, simply increase the ingredients and keep them in proportion. For example, in the typical half-gallon pitcher, you would combine 3.75 cups tequila, 2.5 cups orange liqueur, and 1.25 cup lime juice. This makes 7.5 cups, leaving room in the pitcher for you to adjust the three ingredients to taste, add a sweetener without increasing the alcohol, or chill it with ice. The margarita is a strong drink, so dilution and small servings are important.

What’s The Difference Between Tequila And Mezcal

You may have heard the rumor that the spirit known as mezcal is simply a smoky version of tequila. In fact, the truth is closer to the reverse of that: the term “mezcal” refers broadly to any distillate of the agave plant produced in Mexico, so the spirit called tequila is simply one specific type of mezcal. While government regulations allow for the production of mezcal in nine different Mexican states, tequila may only be produced in five states: Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, Guanajuato, and certain parts of Tamaulipas. Addionally, while mezcal may be produced from dozens of different agave varietiesresulting in numerous distinct styles and flavor profilestequila may only be produced from the blue Weber agave.

    What Is Tequila Reposado

THIS IS THE BEST TEQUILA UNDER $100

Taking its name from the Spanish for restful, Reposado Tequila is rested in oak barrels between a few months to a year.

This process extracts a naturally occurring ingredients called tannins from the wood.

Ever had the experience of your mouth feeling dry after drinking red wine. Thats tannins.

The tannins give the Tequila a darker golden colour and enhances the flavours with warm caramel notes. This balances the original spicy make-up of the Tequila.

The English word for Añejo? Old.

Añejo Tequila is like Reposado but aged for between one to three years.

Leaving the spirit to age for this long creates a rich flavour and darkens the colour of the drink.

You can also get Añejo Extra which is Tequila aged for over three years. Next time youre thinking of getting shots, just remember the work which went into this spirit!

    Different Types Of Tequila

Tequila is under the mezcal family which refers to drinks that use any of the 50+ agave species. Tequila should be made with 100% blue Weber agave. Meanwhile, this drink has various designations like Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, and Extra Anejo. This refers to the length of their aging process. Lets take a closer look at these designations.

    El Tesoro Blanco Tequila

This Blanco tequila serves as the foundation of El Tesoro’s flavor profile, with one of the most natural agave flavors you’ll encounter in a bottle.

It is unaged and bottled directly after distillation to capture the spirit of the highland blue weber agave. In this traditional, agave-forward tequila, the minerality of Jalisco’s soil and water shines through.

This tequila is bold, fragrant, and incredibly smooth. It has a fascinating blend of sweetened pepper notes that make it a versatile spirit. It is suitable to drink on its own, and at the same time, be one of the finest bases for tequila cocktails like margaritas.

    Best Cristalino: 1800 Cristalino

Region: Jalisco, Mexico | ABV: 40% | Tasting Notes: Sweet, Smooth, Peppery

A recent innovation, cristalino is made by stripping the color from aged tequila. Its essentially a way to circumvent the steep pricing of agave due to crop shortages by using what distillers already have in stock. The 1800 Cristalino is a good bottle to uncork when drinking with non-tequila fans. Blended from 16-month-old añejo aged in American and French oak, its rested for an additional six months in former port barrels before double filtering. As youd expect, its sweet on the nose and the palate, with a luscious mouthfeel, but it finishes with some of the pepperiness that bespeaks the agave. Sip this neat or on ice.

These are the 10 Best Tequila Brands

The aging process for these tequilas must be a minimum of three years, but most often they are aged for much longer. The longer aging process allows for the development of more complex flavors and a smoother taste.

The tequila is also blended with different woods during the barrel aging, which contributes to the unique flavor profile.

    El Bandido Yankee Tequila

    El Bandido Yankee

A new entry into the tequila market, El Bandido Yankee launched in 2021 by former NFL player Jim Bob Morris and restaurateur and NHL Hall of Fame Hockey Player Chris Chelios. The idea: to create an ultra premium, ultra-smooth tequila at an accessible price point. This is an all-around crowd-pleasing tequila, too, with a wonderfully distinct flavor profile thats at once rich and complex. Notes of pepper and vanilla balance the buttery profile along with hints of citrus. The Reposado expression is also aged in stripped and recharred American Oak bourbon barrels, which gives it a deliciously herbaceous toasted flavor.

Though we prefer El Bandido Yankee as a sipping tequila , the flavor has enough bite to make for some beautiful cocktails, too. Everything is made in with 100% blue weber agave and is confirmed all-natural and additive-free for a tequila that goes down smooth and silky. We like what the brand is doing with the no-for-profit S.A.C.R.E.D too, which re-invests 100% of proceeds from merchandise and a portion of tequila sales back into the local Mexican communities where agave spirits are made to identify and support vital needs.
