Why Is It Called An Ipa
IPA stands for India pale ale. It supposedly started being brewed in the UK in the 1780s and became a popular beer among British soldiers and administrators serving in India, which was then under the control of the East India Company. However, theres much controversy about its history.The commonest story is that a brewer named Hodgson pioneered the drink specifically to export to India, because it was too hot to brew in the subcontinent, and because it matured en route, a journey of four to six months.This claim is disputed, though. A beer writer who goes by the name of Zythophile rebutted many of the common claims. The rebuttal was aimed specifically at a Smithsonian article, but the familiar story can be found in almost any history of IPA. Hodgson may have just got lucky, and happened to be selling October beer at around the time traders came a-looking for beer to take to India. It survived the trip surprisingly well, and that enhanced its popularity.Claims that it completely replaced the previous favourite drink, porter, are demonstrably false, as theres evidence porter was widely drunk in India in the 1800s in much greater volumes than was IPA.We can be sure of two things, though: IPA was indeed exported to India, and it was a more hoppy version of pale ale. Whether it was pioneered in the 1780s by Hodgson probably needs further investigation. Its a nice story though.

How Does An Ipa Beer Taste
The types of hops that are used determine the aromas – key flavours can be citrus, tropical fruits, grassy, flowery or earthy, but also reminiscent of pines or even honey. Typical American hop varieties include Chinook, Citra or Amarillo, and German hop varieties such as Hallertau varieties or Mandarina.
In addition, the hops always ensure a certain bitterness. Because an IPA is usually refreshing, it is more commonly regarded as a summer beer.
Different Types Of Ipa’s
This style of IPA has taken the world by storm. They are more hop-forward, bringing out piney, bitter and citrus notes. American IPAs can be quite resinous. Some hops traditionally used in American style IPAs are Citra, Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, Amarillo & Simcoe.
Australian IPAs
With Australias craft beer scene being largely influenced by the American craft beer scene it is not surprising that most Australian styled IPAs have quite similar characteristics to American IPAs. Many will also have additions of Galaxy hops , which gives the beer citrus and passionfruit characteristics.
This style of IPA tends to have earthy or woody characteristics with a little spice. They have far less hop intensity compared to American IPAs and can have more of a malty profile. Some hops traditionally used in English style IPAs include Fuggle, Challenger and Goldings.
IPAs by style:
Sometimes referred to as Imperial IPAs Double IPAs take a regular IPA and amplify all the characteristics, with a bigger malt and hop profile.
The alcohol content is also greater with Double IPAs, usually between 7.5-10%.
A great example of a Double IPA is Pirate Life’s IIPA.
This takes a Double IPA to the next level and are probably the least commercialised IPAstyle, mostly because of the higher alcohol content.
Triple and Quadruple IPAs typically have an alcohol content of between 10% – 16%.

New England Style Ipa
The New England IPA is what people are drinking right now. This IPA is unfiltered and has extremely low bitterness from using blends of hops that lend intense, fruity flavor. New England style IPAs are often dry-hopped and tend to be fermented to have lower carbonation. These beers look like orange juice, smell like fruit salad , and taste like fresh fruit cobbler. This is the IPA for the I dont like IPAs, person in your life, which might be why theyre so popular right now.

How Was Ipa Invented
IPA was allegedly invented by the British during their efforts to colonize India. Again and again, the beer they sent their troops failed to endure the sea voyage all the way around the cape of Africa. Extreme temperatures and prolonged storage without the benefits of refrigeration were less than ideal conditions for transporting beer. As a result, it kept spoiling on the trip. The British had two tools to work with: alcohol and hops. Both of these work as preservatives. According to legend, it was George Hodgson of East Londons Bow Brewery who eventually created the first IPA. It was bitter and highly alcoholic, but it could make the long ocean trip.
Breweries eventually sprung up in more locations. Refrigeration was invented. The original hurdles IPA was created to clear were no longer an issue. IPA has stuck around, however. It has even gathered its own pack of diehard fans.

Why Are Ipas So Strong
It will tend to be more malty and thicker than say a Budweiser and that will also affect how you feel. For a variety of reasons, IPAs are generally brewed with higher specific gravities, resulting in a higher alcohol content by volume.
The Evolution Of Beer
It began very simply. Grain was cracked, boiled, and steeped, yeast was added, and beer was drunk. The Greeks and Romans partook. The church got involved and beer became ritualistic. Saint Brigid of Kildare, in Ireland, was even purported to have worked wonders with beer. Many holy men in the first millennium AD are in fact heralded as beer miracle workers.
Around 822 AD, hops were finally added to beer. Hops provide beer with bittering, flavoring, and stability. They make beer taste more fruity, flavorful, and citrusy.
Hops are flowers that resemble cones and serve the additional purpose of acting as an antibacterial agent over less desirable microorganisms.
Then, around 1200 AD, beer began to become commercialized, wherein brewers could make and sell beer for profit.

Ipa Vocab: What Does It Mean
Theres a lot of different vocabulary associated with IPAs, whether its a Double, Session or Fresh-Hopped version, we give you the lowdown to help you decide which IPA is right for you.
Hops
Hops give IPAs their wonderful flavour and play an important role in the creation of these beers thanks to their distinctive aroma. They are actually flowers that are harvested from the Humulus Lupulus plant and are used primarily to add flavour and bitterness. There are many different types of hops and each is specially chosen for its specific aromatic properties. The number of hops used to create an IPA can vary significantly but most use 2-3 different types to create the unique IPA flavour.
Double IPA
Sometimes referred to as an Imperial IPA, this is an India Pale Ale with an extra helping of hops. Double IPAs or DIPAs are typically made using a lot more hops than standard IPAs and tend to have a much stronger and hoppier flavour. Some craft breweries have even started selling Triple IPAs, with youve guessed it – is even more hops! These IPAs tend to be on the stronger side and have a higher ABV, usually between 7-10%.
Session IPA
Session IPAs simply have less alcohol, expect an ABV of between 3-5%. These IPAs are easy to drink thanks to their lower alcohol content and make for a great after work beer. They tend to sit somewhere between a traditional pale ale and an IPA. You can expect the same great taste of a regular IPA but with a lower alcohol content.

What Is Pale Ale
Pale ale is where IPA gets two-thirds of its name from. It was pioneered in the 1600s and used coke-dried malts to produce a cleaner, lighter colour than normal ale, dried on smoky coal fires. Bitter and pale ale are essentially the same thing, But Bitters tend to be more malt forward and often opt for less fruity hops like Fuggles and Goldings, while Pale Ales promise a lighter malt base and prefer floral and fruity hops.

A Brief History Of Ipa
When ordinary beer wouldnt survive the journey to India, a new pale ale was born
If youd said the initials IPA to a barman 10 years ago, he might well have looked at you blankly. Or he may have thought you were referring to a weak bitter called IPA made by Greene King. Real ale, in general, was a niche market. Live beer is hard to keep and few establishments, especially in London where I lived, seemed to have any interest in doing it properly. One time in a pub in Putney, I tried to return a pint that was a cloudy sludge of yeast and vinegar and was told by the supercilious French barman that it was English beer: it was meant to taste like that.
My friends all drank lager. I thought it odd that people so discerning when it came to hip-hop and sunglasses would have such little interest in what they poured down their throats. Since 2010, however, things have changed. Craft beer pubs are everywhere and their success has forced existing pubs to up their game. Bar staff now are positively evangelical about beer. Spearheading this revival is IPA not weedy old Greene King but beers of 5-7% packed with hops and flavour.
