Black Saddle 12 Year Bourbon

Bourbon Review: Black Saddle 12 Yr Old Straight Kentucky Bourbon

Black Saddle 12 Year Bourbon Whiskey Review

I first read about Black Saddle on Caskerss website. Aged for 12 years, this bourbon was named the Best Small Batch Bourbon at the 2014 San Francisco World Spirits Competition winning a Double Gold Medal. Its spring horse racing season. And, even though it has a western saddle on the label, I felt it follows my spring racing theme.

I love Black Saddles label and bottle graphics. The seal over the cork is also very well done with an embossed saddle on it. Open the bottle and you immediately smell the spice. its a wonderful aroma. Upon tasting it, I immediately got vanilla and a lot of other spices. The distillers notes say crème brulee, pepper, and toasted cinnamon. You can taste and sense all of those.

At 90 proof it grabs your attention in a good way. It definitely says I am going to impress you and hold my intensity and your attention. You get a lot of flavors for the whole experience from first taste to finish. For dinner tonight we had kielbasa simmered in onions and beer served over extra wide egg noodles. I tasted the bourbon prior to dinner, during dinner, and after dinner. It was a trifecta and worked all evening.

This is definitely a bourbon I would suggest giving a try. It is a very good bourbon worth you attention and the $50 price tag.

BTW If you arent subscribed to Caskers, you should . They get some very good, unique, hard to find bourbons.

Bourbon whiskey is a type of American whiskey that is a barrel-aged distilled liquor made mainly from corn. The name comes from the French Bourbon dynasty, although it is still debated till today whether the Kentucky county or New Orleans Street inspired this whiskey’s name. Bourbon has been produced since the 18th century, but the name “Bourbon” was not used until the 1850s. You can find this liquor being made anywhere in the United States, but bourbon is strongly identified with the American South in general, and Kentucky in particular.

Bourbon has a long ageing process that allows for that great flavor you love. After maturing the bourbon in the process, the bourbon is taken from the barrel and usually diluted with water. The bourbon is then bottled to at least 80 US proof. Some higher-proof bottles are marketed as “barrel proof”, which means that they have not been diluted or have been only lightly diluted after removal from the barrels. Bourbon whiskey may be sold at less than 80 proof but must be labeled as “diluted bourbon”.

Bourbon can be served neat, diluted with water, over ice cubes, or mixed with juice or soda into delicious bourbon cocktails, including the Manhattan, the Old Fashioned, the whiskey sour, and the mint julep. Bourbon can also used in cooking. Buy whiskey online and use this versatile bourbon for many different things. Get out that bottle of bourbon for any occasion.

Simple, light, and buttery, this bourbon is an easy sipper that anyone should be able to handle.

Overall, this bourbon is simplistic to a fault and ends up underwhelming as a whole, especially considering its price.

Worth buying a pour. This is a classic try-it-before-you-buy-it bottle.

In the modern whiskey climate where consumers are more savvy than ever, and more demanding than ever that producers meet at least a minimum transparency requirement, Black Saddle stands out as a black hole completely void of pretty much any information other than the fact that it is Kentucky straight bourbon and at least 12 years old. The only hint the bottle gives is in small print on the back label, stating that it was bottled by Frank-Lin Distillers Products in Farfield, CA. A further search for Frank-Lin Distillers Products reveals that they are a California-based bottler of a variety of spirits and wines. In Scotland, you would commonly refer to such a company as an independent bottler. In the bourbon industry we call it a non-distilling producer, or NDP.

On bear trap saddles, the swells are often so large that they trap the riders legs in the saddle regardless of how hard a horse bucks, making it difficult to get thrown from the horses back even in the worst of situations. Black Saddle Bourbon Review:

Black Saddle 12 year Bourbon: Drink Pro Reviews

An exceptional dram 100%. An exceptional whisky that in my opinion is much more than the sum of its parts. Good for your lucky steed . This is one of those rare drams that really should be treated with celebration, for me I found myself subconsciously tapping my feet, in a restrained boogie.

The bottle of bourbon is pretty cool looking. It comes in a unique bottle shaped like a hip flask and has a classy label on it. It appears to have a signature on the bottle from the creator of this bourbon, but when I took a closer look I saw that it doesnt look like a signature but rather a little drawing. Its neat.

History:The whiskey started out as a column distilled whiskey. That means that unlike the other kinds of columns used in the distillery, bourbon doesnt see a lot of crystal to capture the flavors like the others do. This led me to believe that the distillery had a lot of experience making bourbon and a lot of experience flavour controlling it. I could be wrong, but it makes sense to me.

This column distilled whiskey was then put into what they call their rake barrel. This is a small barrel, with two thirds of a space on the top for air and other whiskey vapors to enter.

Then they put this whiskey into full sized barrels, and left it there for 12 years, giving the whiskey so much chance to age. These processes help create some of the best bourbons around.

As a result of this maturation process, the bourbon has a rich amber color along with an aroma of spicy nougat, creme brulee and hard candy that gives way to notes of pepper spices, toasted cinnamon, and hints of vanilla.

Notes:

  • Distilled by an undisclosed Kentucky distillery
  • Bottled by Frank-Lin Distillers Products in California
  • Unknown mash bill
  • Bottled at 45% ABV

Nose: Little besides ethanol comes out of the glass before this bourbon has had a good rest. After some air time, aromas of buttered popcorn, vanilla, and a bit of nougat emerge.

Palate: Simple and lacking much heft or depth. The arrival is buttery and the development is filled with vanilla, before a bit of pepper shows up on the back end. Nothing is offensive or off putting, but its devoid of any real complexity.

Finish: Slightly warming. Spicier than the nose or palate with some light pepper, vanilla, and a touch of citrus to round things out. Medium length.
