GEORGE, Grant County Brandi Carlile has long discussed the impact Lilith Fair had on her, seeing the groundbreaking all-women festival as a teenager from the lawn at Gorge Amphitheatre, where the roving fest launched in 1997. Now an annual Gorge headliner herself, Carlile reminded the 18,000 fans who came to see her Saturday at the landmark Washington venue that those ethos and ideals course through everything she does 25 years later.
That much was as clear as the big bright moon that hung over the Gorge as Carlile was joined on stage by Lilith founder Sarah McLachlan, the decorated singer-songwriter whose performance earlier in the night was a nostalgic, tear-jerking catharsis for fractured times.
Carlile and her superb nine-piece band already had rumbled and crooned through most of her most beloved tunes when, after the encore break, the 90s undisputed sad-song queen quietly took a seat at the piano. With a clear mutual admiration, the A-list duet partners floated through McLachlans Do What You Have to Do a Carlile favorite she begged her folk-pop hero to sing with her and Angel. Carlile and Mitchell are set to co-headline a two-part concert event titled Echoes Through the Canyon. Carlile will play the Gorge on June 9, followed by Mitchell on June 10.

In an interview this month with the Los Angeles Times, Carlile gushed about performing with Mitchell at the Newport Folk Festival and opened up about how spending time at the 78-year-old music icons home inspired her latest album, In the Canyon Haze.

Joni Mitchell Joining Brandi Carlile For Summer 2023 Echoes Through The Canyon Shows At The Gorge
Brandi Carlile and Joni Mitchell are planning a sequel. Carlile announced on The Daily Show on Wednesday night that she and folk icon Mitchell will reunite for a special concert weekend at Washington states picturesque venue the Gorge Amphitheatre in June 2023 for a pair of shows theyre calling Echoes Through the Canyon.
In the wake of this summers surprise Mitchell concert at the venerable Newport Folk Festival, Carlile said that Joni told her, I want to do another show. She said, I want to play again. So they settled on the 27,000-capacity Gorge, which Carlile noted is one of the most beautiful venues in the world. Brandi will play the first night, June 9 as part of her annual Echoes series , followed on June 10 by Mitchell headlining the Joni Jam, with Carlile opening and a full lineup to be announced.

Crow would later return the favor, accompanying Carlile who recalled watching Crow perform at the Gorge during the formative Lilith Fairs of her youth for a spellbinding Rocket Man cover.
Carliles first post-shutdown get-together with her home state fans well, second if you count Thursdays semisecret Neptune show for fan club members had the familiarity of old friends picking up where they left off after time apart. Brandi Carlile kicked off her Beyond These Silent Days Tour with a guest-filled concert at The Gorge on Saturday. Carlile and her band were joined by Sarah McLachlan, Lucius, Celisse and more at the scenic Washington state venue.
The home state singer-songwriter kicked off her 25-song performance with Broken Horses, one of seven tunes from 2021s In These Silent Days to make the setlist at The Gorge. Carlile then led her band through Mainstream Kid off 2015s The Firewatchers Daughter and the title track from 2007s The Story. Next came a cover of Joni Mitchells A Case Of You before LuciusJess Wolfe and Holly Laessig added backing vocals on You And Me On The Rock.
Brandi continued her set at The Gorge with the live debut of In These Silent Days standout Mama Werewolf. Next came classic The Eye and Carlile leading the crowd through Happy Birthday To You in honor of her daughter, Evangeline Ruth Carliles upcoming birthday. After The Mother, Celisse emerged to play guitar on Raise Hell and covers of David Bowies Space Oddity and Radioheads Creep.
The Lucius vocalists returned a few songs later to back Brandi on the first live Sinners, Saints And Fools and a take on Alone by i-Ten. A run featuring The Joke,Turpentine and Party Of One closed out Saturdays main set.
