Bourbon is a good starter whiskey if youre just getting into drinking it neat. The high proportion of corn used to make it gives it a sweeter flavor that calms some of the alcohol burn. If you want a cocktail but dont have the time, ingredients or knowhow to make your own, dont fret whatever you like to drink is probably available in a can. The recent surge in ready-to-drink cocktails has taken the country by storm, and D-FW is not immune from its wake.
Hard seltzers arent new, and brands like Zima and Mikes Hard Lemonade dominated the 90s. It turns out they were just a little early to the party. Once White Claw and Truly launched in 2016, it was off to the races, and since then dozens more RTDs have hit the market.
According to IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, the biggest volume gains in U.S. alcohol consumption last year were seen across the RTD category, which grew by 62.3% in 2020 and shows no signs of slowing down. Canned and bottled cocktails already surpassed spirits in total volume, and by the end of 2021, they will account for more volume than wine.
As far as Texas-based producers go, you can find gin- and tequila-based canned cocktails from Dallas-based RancH2O, ranch water hard seltzer from West Texas-based Lone River Beverage Co., and more ranch water from Texas-based Epic Western.
The latest to join the market is a line of canned whiskey-based cocktails from Fort Worths TX Whiskey distillery.

Choose The Right Glass
The first thing you need to consider when figuring out how to drink whiskey is the type of glass you are using.
Many people drink whiskey out of tumblers, which is a short glass with a heavier bottom. These are also known as rocks glasses.
Another typical whiskey glass is a highball. This is a tall and skinny glass that is usually used for mixed drinks.
Regardless, just know that the kind of glass you use can make a difference in how you experience and taste the whiskey.
Some glasses are designed to concentrate the vapors of the whiskey, which will allow you to smell it as much as you taste it. Experiencing the potent smell will significantly enhance the flavor.

How Is Texas Whiskey Made

Many Texas whiskey producers put a unique spin on drams, creating profiles reflective of the Lone Star State, but there are a set of steps they must follow.
MashingThe ground mash of the primary mix of grains is cooked in water and then yeast is added to convert starches to sugars.
FermentingThe sugar turns the mash into alcohol when it’s transferred into fermentation tanks. At the end of the fermentation process, which takes three to four days, the liquid that remains is considered distillers beer, which is between 14-16% alcohol by volume.

This is where it gets exciting. The distillers beer is now placed in a still. Pot still whiskeys, especially bourbons, are rare, as most bourbon whiskey producers in America use column stills. The flavours naturally vary as spirits distilled in a pot still tend to be rounded and robust, whereas those distilled in column stills tend to have brighter, sharper notes. Compared with other states, the whiskeys in Texas made using column stills have a richer profile like vanilla icing but with a deep hint of dark chocolate and caramel despite being younger, because of the drastic weather changes.
Some distilleries such as Andalusia Whiskey Co. use pot stills for their peated single malt whiskeys. Unlike Scotland where the peat is burned, here, malted barley is smoked in Texas barbecue tradition using mesquite, oak and applewood.

Jack Daniels Tennessee Rye Cocktails & Shots
The best way to drink Jack Daniels Tennessee Rye is also in mixed drinks, cocktails and shots. This is because its another relatively cheap sweet and very smooth whiskey.
The only difference between Tennessee Rye and Old No. 7 is the mash bill. Tennessee Rye is made with 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley whereas Old No. 7 is made with 80% corn, 8% rye and 12% malted barley, making the Tennessee Rye a spicier version of the Old No. 7.
This means it can be good to drink neat as a cheaper introduction to rye whiskeys but like Old No. 7, while the flavors are good there are not enough of them to make this an interesting daily sipper for most whiskey drinkers.
It also means that the Tennessee Rye can be used to spice up mixed drinks and cocktails. For example, while as mentioned above, ginger ale is a good mixer for Jack Daniels Old No. 7, its an even better mixer for something containing rye spice. As for cocktails, the Tennessee Rye can be used in those that are traditionally or often made with rye whiskey.
Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select Neat / Cocktails
There are two ways to drink Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select and that is both neat and in a cocktail.
Its great to drink neat because despite being a single barrel version of Old No. 7, its a big step up from it flavor wise. This is because all versions of this whiskey come from barrels stored in the uppermost part of the Jack Daniels warehouse, where increased changes in temperature cause the whiskeys color to deepen and its flavors to become more intense.
Having said that, with a higher ABV than many of the other Jack Daniels expressions you may find that you prefer adding a little water or ice as that can release more of the whiskeys sweetness.
Additionally, since the Single Barrel Select is on the one hand better than the Old No. 7 but on the other hand not too complex or expensive, its also a great higher-quality whiskey for a higher-quality cocktail.

Tx Smoked Bourbon Old Fashioned
- 2 parts TX Bourbon
- 0.25 parts Smoked Simple Syrup
- Handful of Wood Shavings
- 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters
Place a handful of wood chips on a plank of thick wood or ceramic platen. We prefer shavings from a bourbon barrel stave, but you can also use Pecan, Oak, Peach, or Hickory. Use a torch to fire them up until they just begin to light. Place glass over the chips to snuff the fire and leave for a minute to soak the smoke while making the cocktail. Mix cocktail ingredients together in a separate glass with ice and stir. Flip smoked glass over, immediately add fresh ice and strain cocktail into smoked glass.

Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey Cocktails & Shots
Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey is not technically a whiskey as its only 35%ABV and contains caramel coloring. Its more appropriately described as a honey liqueur and I know that because its written on the bottle. Its a blend of Old No. 7 and Jack Daniels own honey liqueur.

TX Texas straight Bourbon Whiskey, an award-winning true American craft spirit and one of the newer brands in the USA, was founded by Leonard Firestone and Troy Robertson in 2010.
Both ex Corporate men, these two entrepreneurs, independently, had a vision for setting up a premium craft Whisky enterprise.
Though they had become friends because their children were in the same playgroup, they had never discussed their ambitions in the Whiskey line with each other.
Fortuitously, after they had both decided to visit the same craft distillery to gain a bit more knowledge on the matter they became aware of each others dreams. This led to their teaming up in a partnership and TX was born.
