Pusser’s Rum review

You cant go anywhere in the British Virgin Islands without seeing Pussers British Navy Rum. When we arrived in Road Town, Tortola, I headed straight to Pussers English pub to investigate.

Overlooking Road Harbor, Pussers Road Town Pub is in prime position for all cruise shippers and boaties docking in Road Town amazing for people watching for someone like me.

When you walk in, you feel like you arestepping into an old Victorian tavern Disney land style. Complete with a deep mahogany infostructure, a cluttered assembly of navy portraits, bric-a-bracs hanging from the ceiling and Pussers branded pewter mugs everywhere this old English pub seems a little out of place here in Road Town, but the novelty was not lost on me.

Pussers Rum was first introduced to Great Britains Royal Navy in 1655 as a substitute for beer. The Navy supplied its crew a daily tot of Pussers Rum for well over 300 years and always double-downed before a battle and after victory! With such rich history, I was pretty excited to try Pussers Rum in all its cocktail based forms. So here is what I have to report:

  • Pussers Rum Punch A delightful blend of Pussers Rum, tropical juices, grenadine, Angostura Bitters and grated cinnamon.

This was the first Pussers cocktail I had in the BVI. Nice and fruity but incredibly deceiving- you will get very drunk after just one. Sadly, I could not taste much of the rum itself in this cocktail but I could feel it. As a drink in itself.

What Is Navy Style Rum

Navy rumtraditionally, a rum blend featuring rums from Guyana, Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidadwas once given to sailors by the Royal British Navy as daily rations or tots. Blended in Barbados with rums from Guyana and Trinidad, Pussers is a bold rum that is true to the English style: funky and full-flavored.

A Note On Cream Of Coconut

Cream of coconut is almost always found in a can. If you buy it in a warm climate, such as the Virgin Islands, chances are the contents will already be nice and melted for you.

However, if purchased up north, such as where I live in Ohio, the cream of coconut will likely be hard and separated. The is remedied simply by pouring everything into a bowl and sticking it in the microwave for thirty seconds or so.

Create Your Painkiller Mix

We recommend first creating a Painkiller mix, and then dividing it into various glasses, rather than making each drink individually. This is largely because of the way cream of coconut behaves.

Unfortunately, cream of coconut has the tendency to solidify when poured over ice by itself, which will cause your otherwise smooth drink to be filled with solid chunks. If you instead make the mix fist, and then pour the whole thing over ice, the cream of coconut does much better at staying in liquid form.

Small Painkiller Batch :

Remember 4-1-1! To make one small Painkiller batch youll need the following:

  • 12 oz. pineapple juice
  • 3 oz. cream of coconut
  • 3 oz. orange juice

With these small batches, youll likely have leftover creme of coconut if you used a 15 oz. can. You can store any extras in the fridge for about 2 weeks, or store it in the freezer for even longer.

Large Painkiller Batch :

Great for bringing to the beach! Sticking with 4-1-1, we based the pineapple juice and orange juice off of the use of an entire 15 oz. can of creme of coconut.

  • 58 oz. pineapple juice
  • 15 oz. can of cream of coconut
  • 15 oz. orange juice

While the ratio here isnt a perfect 4-1-1, it does take factor in the residual cream of coconut that tends to stick to the can. For the orange juice, simply leave a little room when refilling the top of the can to compensate.

The Perfect Glassware For Your Painkiller Cocktail


To drink these at the beach, the simplest drinking vessel is the tried and true red Solo cup. However, weve found using Tervis cups with lids helps to keep your drink cooler and prevent sand from blowing into it.

While we sometimes find these cups at our vacation rentals, they do not always supply lids. Therefore, we now own our own Tervis cups with lids that we pack with us on vacation.

There you have it your complete guide to making the perfect Pussers Rum Painkiller whether you are at home or in the Caribbean. Now you can let your mind wander back to the tropics as you sip your favorite island cocktail after a rough workweek or in times when youd rather be traveling, but are stuck at home.

Writing this post has given me a serious St. John craving, so I might need to make a Painkiller for myself now. After all, one sip always takes me straight back to the Virgin Islands.

  • – 12 oz. Pineapple Juice

Why Did The Pirates Drink Rum

Rum, distilled from sugar, however, was cheaper to transport and so became a staple export. This meant that many of the ships attacked by pirates were laden with barrels of rum, ripe for the taking. They could be sold for a pretty price, but pirates tended to drink a fair chunk of this kind of loot.

Origins Of The Painkiller Recipe

The Painkiller drink was invented at the Soggy Dollar bar on Jost Van Dyke in the BVIs. Due to its fame, large crowds flock to Soggy Dollar on White Bay every year, most of whom are swimming in from boat charters. Its the coolest way to do it!

If you are visiting the Virgin Islands, it is always worth the effort to hop on a charter to the BVIs. White Bay is such a fun place to spend the afternoon, as the beach is totally lined with little shacks containing bars and restaurants. Plus, the Painkillers at the Soggy Dollar Bar truly are good, although they recently started to make them with their own Soggy Dollar Rum.

No disrespect to Soggy Dollar, but this girl likes a little bite in her rum to offset those sweet Painkiller ingredients. Therefore, I continue to order my drink with Pussers, even at Soggy Dollar. It is, after all, how they originally concocted their own famous recipe!

Pussers Gunpowder Proof Rum

Pussers Painkiller, with Pussers Rum

Pussers Gunpowder Proof Rum has been heavily influenced by rum distilled in the famed Demerara Distillers double wooden pot still of the Port Mourant estate, which first went into production in 1732. Although relocated and refurbished over the years, the double wooden pot stills continue to be the bedrock of Navy rum and a vital part of the distillation process that produces superbly enhanced aroma and flavour. The Greenheart staves of these old wooden stills have absorbed decades of unique, organic flavouring compounds that provide a deep flavour far beyond that of mass-produced rums.

Following distillation, Pussers Gunpowder Proof Rum is aged for a minimum of three years in charred oak bourbon barrelsimparting additional smoothness and flavour. The tropical climate in Guyana helps spirits reach their maturity faster than spirits aged in cooler climates.

On the nose, Pussers Gunpowder Proof Rum reveals pungent molasses, treacle, toffee, honey and vanilla with oak, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. On the pallet puts on display a full-bodied rum with a more enhanced flavour profile than the lower proof Pussers Blue Label, with extraordinary length and complex finish.

How To Bring This Painkiller Recipe To The Beach


You can totally make this Painkiller recipe portable, and pre-make a mix that is easily transportable to the beach. To do this, simply make Painkiller mix in bulk as instructed above, portion out the amount of mix you want to bring, and add your rum in advance.

However, if youre only bringing part of the mixture, how do you know how much rum to add?

Heres my non-scientific answer simply taste it intermittently until its to your liking. You can normally tell youre getting close by the color of the liquid. We like ours to be a nice light brown.

Add Your Painkiller Mix

Shake up any premade mix before pouring, as ingredients may have separated. Then pour the mix into the glass over the rum, all the way to the top of the ice.

There is no need to use a shaker to combine the rum and mix. Instead, simply pour the contents back and forth from your mixing glass to your drinking glass. I know this isnt very fancy, but then again, Painkillers really arent meant to be fancy!

Why Was Bacardi 151 Discontinued

A rumor cropped up on Reddit that 151 wasnt really being put out to pasture, just temporarily withdrawn for a repackaging. Unfortunately, a phone call from The Brutal Hammer to Bacardi HQ has confirmed 151s demise. No official reason was ever given, but its a pretty good guess that Bacardi got sick of being sued.

The Pussers Painkiller Story

Painkiller Cocktail Recipe w/ Pussers Navy Rum

A version of the classic Pussers Painkiller® had its start at the six-seat Soggy Dollar Bar on a long stretch of white sand beach at White Bay on the island of Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands. Theres no dock, so the usual way in is to swim. Of course, your dollars get wet, hence the name Soggy Dollar Bar.

It was owned by an English lady, Daphne Henderson. Boaters, including Pussers founder, Charles Tobias, came from distant places to sample her version of the Painkiller for which shed become locally famous. The fact that Tobias had gone to The Admiralty Board of the Royal Navy and gained permission to commercialize the rum in 1979 made him curious about this deliciously concocted recipe made with Pussers Rum.

Daphne Henderson and Charles Tobias became good friends, but in spite of their close friendship, and no matter how he tried, she refused to divulge her secret recipe for the cocktail. Two years passed. One late Sunday afternoon, after a morning spent killing the pain, Tobias somehow managed to get one of her concoctions back through the surf and over the gunwale into his boat, and ultimately into his kitchen on Tortola where he lives. There we went to work trying to match her flavor as closely as possible with his own recipe, which he finally worked out to be 4-1-1-1 ratiofour parts pineapple, one part cream of coconut and one part orange juice adding Pussers Rum to suit.
