Brandi Carlile is fast becoming a legend in music.

But one of her best qualities as an artist is recognizing those talents around her, those who have come before, and those who are working in her wake. She has long been close with big names like Elton John and Joni Mitchell. Now, shes showcasing more musical relationships that meant much to her.

Case in point: at her shows over the weekend in Nashville, Carlile brought up a number of performers to share the stage, including Wynonna Judd, Lucius, Katie Pruitt, Brittney Spencer, and more.

Members of Carliles family were also among those who graced the stage at Ascend Amphitheater in Music City.

According to reports, Lucius and Celisse were called at the last minute to replace the Indigo Girls, who were slated to open both nights but had to cancel due to COVID-19 complications.

Saturdays setlist included a cover of the Indigo Girls song Virginia Woolf. Also included in the show was a cover of Mitchells Woodstock.

Celisse also sat in during the shows, playing guitar and collaborating on a number of tracks, including a cover of David Bowies Space Oddity, Radioheads Creep and Alone by Heart.

Judd, who will later be joined by Carlile and other artists on tour, which was supposed to be The Judds final tour but plans changed in the wake of her mother Naomi Judds recent passing, performed with Carlile at the Ascend Amphitheater. She performed The Judds classics Girls Night Out and Love Is Alive.

Wynonna Pairs With Brandi Carlile To Sing The Rose During Naomi Judds Memorial

Wynonna Judd and Brandi Carlile – Why Not Me – Toledo, OH – 10/1/2022

Naomi Judd was remembered during a memorial service held at the Ryman Auditorium on Sunday . The entire service was broadcast live on CMT without commercial interruptions.

Performers included Brad Paisley, Carly Pearce, and Emmylou Harris, among others. Naomis daughter and singing parter, Wynonna, took to the stage several times herself to honor her through song.

Wynonna sang two of The Judds most meaningful tunes: Love Can Build a Bridge and River of Time. The latter song inspired the name of the memorial service, which was also the name of Naomis 2016 memoir.

During the service, Wynonna paired with Brandi Carlile for a performance. The duo sang Bette Midlers The Rose, which Bette released in 1980. Wynonna got the chance to sing the song with Bette in 1997.

The Rose has been covered numerous times, most notably by country singer Conway Twitty. His 1983 cover of the track reached the #1 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart. It was also a #1 country hit in Canada.

Wynonna and Brandis cover of The Rose was powerful to say the least. Although strong, their voices were full of heartache.

Those who watched the duet were incredibly moved by what they witnessed:

You can watch Wynonna and Brandis performance of The Rose in the video below. Our hearts go out to all of Naomis loved ones and friends during this sad time.

She didnt know what to expect from that first night in Michigan. But from the video she shared, its clear that she was overwhelmed by the audiences encouragement. And by Carliles.

As I walk out on stage that first night, Ill probably say something like, Its not supposed to be like this, Wynonna Judd said. Because its not, right? Its supposed to be the two of us. And Im gonna be angry because shes not there.

Brandi Carlile isnt the only friend that is helping her along the way. Little Big Town, Faith Hill, Ashley McBryde and Kelsea Ballerini will step in on select dates throughout the month. Her friend Martina McBride was already opening all dates, and she remains in that slot. Next up, Wynonna Judd and Brandi Carlile stop in Toledo, Ohio on Saturday. The show stops at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on October 28. Trisha Yearwood joins Wynonna for that one. It wraps in The Judds home state of Kentucky at Rupp Arena in Lexington on October 29. Faith Hill is the guest that evening. Check out all of the dates and get ticket information at The Judds website.

Fans Show Loyalty Love

The response of fans has been “so overwhelming I get dizzy,” Wynonna said. “It’s the holiest of holy when you’re surrounded in that love. When you’re enveloped in that blanket of while light … I just feel I’m wrapped in that love blanket.”

Generations of fans have been singing back to her at the shows, she said.

Wynonna, 58, comes across on the phone as friendly, resilient and down-to-earth. She was speaking from Mexico, where she was part of Brandi Carlile’s“Girls Just Wanna Weekend” concert vacation. She apologizes with self-deprecating humor if she sounds cliched with some of the things she says. She expanded on her feelings about the reactions of fans by adding, “It’s freaking amazing. And I mean freaking.”

Regarding all that has happened, “I’m ready to talk about it,” she said.

The “The Judds: The Final Tour” is Wynonna singing the life and legacy of her mother that’s the heaven.

The hell includes, “Suicide is a mother-effer. It’s a mystery. There are unanswered questions,” Wynonna said.

She said she had no indication that her mother was suicidal in the days leading up to her death.

“No I did not. I had no idea.”

As to whether her mother was looking forward to the final tour, Wynonna said “I don’t really know … I think so because she had started her wardrobe fittings.”
