When You Drink Fireball Every Day This Is What Happens To Your Body

Fireball is a cinnamon whiskey known for its sweet and spicy kick, and the company gives you a glimpse of what you’re getting yourself into with its product by saying, “…imagine what it feels like to stand face-to-face with a fire-breathing dragon who just ate a whiskey barrel full of spicy cinnamon.” Considered by some a little easier on the palate, this spicy alcohol still has its own definite kick. At 33 percent alcohol, this fun beverage seems to pack just the right amount of punch to lighten the mood but isn’t so strong you’ll be headed for home early. But as always, if you consume, you should understand how this recreational beverage can affect your health.

Reasons You Should Never Drink Fireball

If this if your drink of choice, you really need to get out more.

Oh, Fireball. What an embarrassment to alcohol. The cheap and syrupy cinnamon mixture was made for newbie drinkers and Solo cup college parties and that’s as far as it should have made it in the booze scene. Yet somehow it remains a popular order at bars nationwide. But this is wrong. So completely, sadly, and utterly wrong. Sure it might serve its purpose in a big batch Jell-O shot, but if it’s your favorite booze, then you really need to sort out your priorities. Because there are more than enough reasons to not drink Fireball.

Here are 10 things you might not know about Fireball.

1) Taking the chill off

Liquor legend claims the recipe for Fireball was concocted by a Canadian bartender as a way to warm up during one of the countrys coldest winters more than 30 years ago. But Amy Preske, a company spokeswoman told FoxNews.com, No one knows the true origin of the recipe, but those Canadian winters are cold enough to warrant a red hot shot of Fireball.”

2) Whats really in it?

The ingredients are– you guessed it– a secret, but we do know a couple of things. Fireball is made with Canadian Whisky . And theres actually real, natural cinnamon in it.

3) About that antifreeze thing…

4) Where’s the “e”?

The spelling of whisky on the Fireball label has some fans asking what happened to the e. Canadian and Scotch whiskies generally leave out that pesky vowel, while Ireland and the U.S. make whiskey. Experts say Canadian whisky tends to be lighter and smoother than some others which lends itself to Fireball’s sweet appeal.

Fireball Was A Late Bloomer

Fireballs been around since 1984, but America only fell in love with it in the late 2000s. Part of the delay in popularity might have to do with the fact that it was only available in Canada until 2001 with the less-than-sexy name Dr. McGillicudys Fireball Whisky. But Sazerac bought it, gave it a makeover, and most impressively took to the streets to market the stuff face-to-face grassroots style. Soon enough, America fell head over heels.

Why Did My Fireball Cinnamon Freeze When I Put It In The Freezer

The exact freezing point of alcoholic beverages is dependent on its proof, or alcohol by volume. The lower the proof, the warmer the freezing point. Fireball Cinnamon products are lower in alcohol than Fireball Whisky, so they will likely freeze when placed in a standard home freezer typically set to 0°F. Freezers also have an uneven distribution of temperature which means that parts of the freezer are much colder than other parts. We see examples of higher proof spirits freezing as well.

You know you’ve reached success when others start trying to copy you and that’s precisely what happened to Fireball. Not long after the spicy liqueur became a mainstay behind every bar did other spirit companies try to get in on the cinnamon whiskey trend. Some have been more successful than others. There was SinFire Cinnamon Whiskey from Hood River Distillers and Stout Brewing Company’s Fire Flask. Sazerac, Fireball’s parent company, sued both for trademark infringement .

Then the big boys entered the picture. In 2014, Jim Beam unveiled Kentucky Fire, a red hot cinnamon liqueur. “We’ve led the category in flavor innovation in recent years … but our latest flavor certainly turns up the heat,” said Chris Bauder, General Manager of Whiskies at Beam Suntory, in a press release. “We’re thrilled with the initial excitement we’ve seen for Jim Beam Kentucky Fire and are thrilled to continue to bring new and interesting flavor options to our fans and those who are new to whiskey.”

A year later, Jack Daniels introduced its Tennessee Fire cinnamon whiskey, a mix of two of the brand’s preexisting spirits: Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey and cinnamon liqueur. According to the Los Angeles Times, it was Jack Daniel’s first new flavor since 2011. Tennessee Fire didn’t go unnoticed by Sazerac. The manufacturer sued Jack Daniels for allegedly using Google advertising to send users looking for Fireball to search result pages for Tennessee Fire .

A fact so unsettling to Europeans that sales of the sickly sweet booze were “temporarily halted” in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, which Fireball says was “due to a small recipe-related compliance issue.” The chemical coming under fire is propylene glycol, which supposedly enhances flavor by absorbing water. It’s a slightly less toxic compound than ethylene glycol, which wasuntil recentlymost often used in anti-freeze. According to the FDA, propylene glycol is “generally recognized as safe” when used in food “at levels not to exceed current good manufacturing practice,” but nonetheless, Fireball removed the chemical from its recipe.

Is Fireball A Whiskey Or A Liqueur

Though many drinkers call Fireball cinnamon whiskey, it is, in fact, a cinnamon whiskey liqueur. That last word is key because, just like many other flavored whiskeys, as soon as sweeteners are added they are no longer technically whiskeys, but become liqueurs.

Interestingly, Fireball does not really live up to its Tastes like heaven, burns like hell slogan. It has neither the alcohol burn of a full-proof whiskey nor the cinnamon burn of palate shockers like Hot Damn, and it does not have not the delicious cinnamon flavor found in Goldschläger. It is a 66 proof sweetened cinnamon-flavored whiskey, with the cinnamon taking on the flavor of Atomic Fireball candy, not a cinnamon stick.

Fireball is extremely popular, though. Its trendiness as a party shotoften straight out of the bottleis almost following that of Jägermeister not too long ago.

By 2011, Fireball was selling 45,000 cases a year and racking up around $1.9 million in shelf sales. Two years later, it would top $61 million. IRI, a research group that tracks analytics, estimates that by 2014 the brand was doing more than $800 million in sales both off the shelf at liquor stores, and in the bar.

So again, why so popular? The jury is out on any single factor that can account for the massive growth. One reason could be that at only 66 proof, its much easier to take a shot of Fireball than of your more traditional whiskeys. Another could be that it’s readily available… and that a cinnamon after-taste is far preferable to the aftertaste of a shot of vodka. Maybe its because Fireball is relatively cheap compared to other bottles of spirits. Maybe people like the little fire demon on the label. Maybe the fact that its popular is, in-turn, making it more popular. Or maybe it’s some combination of them all: A perfect storm of availability, affordability, and likability that is more-often than not the secret recipe for any products long-term success.

And other brands have taken notice.

But now after years of dominance, could the cinnamon-whiskey train finally be losing steam? Yes, it seems.
