Aged In New Charred American Oak
Third, bourbon must be aged in new charred American oak, most often in the form of a barrel. Note here that, though most people refer to all beer-belly-shaped vessels for aging whiskey as “barrels”, cask is the more correct term in the industry. Why? Because barrel refers only to standard 53 gallon casks that most bourbon today is aged in, while some distilleries use 30 gallon or 15 gallon barrels/casks, known as quarter casks, or even casks that are bigger than the standard 53 gallon bourbon barrel if they so choose. Also notice that theres no requirement for a minimum time spent in new charred American oak. So as soon as white dogor newly made bourbon touches the inside of a new, charred American oak cask, a distillery can call it a bourbon. But a mere week inside a cask often isnt enough time to smooth out the otherwise rough-hewn new make. This is why most bourbon is aged at least one year. Its not required, but palates the world over strongly encourage it.
One final thought on the charred barrels: by charring the inside, a cooper caramelizes parts of the oak known as the hemicellulose, lending flavors of chocolate and butterscotch, and lignins, lending vanilla characteristics. The charred interior also acts as a charcoal filter to shake the spirit down for all its hard edges as it passes in and out of the oaks pores over the months.
Is Crown Royal Bourbon
Crown Royal is known for its mild flavor and is an excellent choice when cooking or baking. It is an excellent addition to vegetable soups, and has a mild smoky flavor. Crown Royal can also be used as a marinade for chicken. For a light marinade, mix half a cup of Crown Royal with one teaspoon of vanilla. Cook the chicken in the marinade for about eight to ten minutes on each side.

Flavours And Colouring From Additives
Depending on the local regulations, additional flavourings and colouring compounds may be added to the whisky. Canadian whisky may contain caramel and flavouring in addition to the distilled mash spirits. Scotch whisky may contain added caramel colouring, but no other additives. The addition of flavourings is not allowed in Americanstraight whiskey, but is allowed in American blends.

Though still part of Virginia at the time, Bourbon County was established in 1785. The name honored a French royal family who aided the colonies during the Revolutionary War. The modern borders of Bourbon County, Kentucky, are not the way it was originally established Old Bourbon County is comprised of 34 modern counties.
In the late 1700s, many German, Irish, and Scottish settlers migrated to the land that would become Kentucky in 1792. It was perfect for growing corn and other grains. Heads Hearts Tails Bourbon Distillation
Heads, hearts and tails are monikers used to describe the three phases of the bourbon distillation process. When a bourbon mash is heated either in a pot still or a column still alcohol vapor begins to evaporate.
The first phase of this vaporizing process is known as the heads portion. With the heads are all of the unwanted vapors like methanol , acetaldehyde, and lighter esters .
The heads are not something a bourbon distiller would want to include in their final distillate. Early moonshiners either due to ignorance or desire to increase yield would sometimes include the distillate form the heads portion, and when their consumers drank it, they ended up going blind, getting very ill or even died.
Now, a little portion of the heads is fine and, in most cases, adds a bit of complexity to the distillate. It is important that a knowledgeable distiller is involved in this process to discern when enough is enough. The heads is also commonly referred to as the first cut.
After the first cut, the heads are typically thrown away, or used in a clean-burning fossil fuel converter to power other operations at a distillery. Sometimes the heads are re-distilled again until they are more suitable for consumption.
The tails portion contains less alcohol by volume and may be re-distilled much the same way as the heads to extract the cleaner and more desirable second heads.
They Come From Different Places
Contrary to popular belief, bourbon can be made outside of Kentucky. However, to legally qualify as bourbon, it must be made in the United States. Simlarly, in order for a whisky to be called Scotch, it must be made in Scotland. Japanese whisky, for example, is similar to Scotch in many ways. But its not Scotch, because its made in Japan.

As mentioned above, charring is undertaken directly by the cooper after the barrel has been manufactured. Producers will often order custom levels of charring depending on the intensity of flavour that they wish to create.
Charring sounds like a long process but it takes only a few seconds. The lightest charring lasts just 15 seconds and the heaviest is less than a minute. Rather than impart a smoky flavour, as many people believe, charring primes the wood before it comes into contact with new whiskey.
The oaks grain is opened by exposing it to an open flame, which allows increases its contact with the whiskey. Meanwhile, the heat provokes a reaction that releases flavourful chemicals such as lactones and hemicellulose.
For instance, the woods cellulose crystalises into sugars while lignin is extracted from the sap. After prolonged contact, these two compounds are absorbed by the distillate and will eventually result in caramel and vanilla flavours respectfully.
