Rum And Ginger Beer Mule

Is Dark Rum The Same Thing As Spiced Rum

SPICED MULE COCKTAIL. Spiced Rum and Ginger Beer shareable cocktail

NO. Dark rum and spiced rum are not synonymous, and since Im not a big rum drinker, I did not realize this until I was developing this drink recipe. Turns out, spiced rum made this taste kind of watery and you didnt get much of the rum flavor.

For the rum newbies out there, heres a breakdown of the different types of rum that are on the market:

  • Light rum : This rum has no color, hence the name. It is not aged for long and is very mild, flavor-wise.
  • Gold rum : This type of rum is aged in wooden casks . This contributes to both the color and the flavor of the rum.
  • Dark rum : This rum is aged in wooden casks for a longer amount of time. It has a deep, dark color and a robust smoky-sweet flavor.
  • Spiced rum: This rum is aged similarly to dark rum. However, it has added spices and caramel coloring for additional sweetness and flavor.

Obviously, were using dark rum in this cocktail to give it extra flavor.

The Story Behind The Raspberry Rum Mule

The Moscow Mule, invented in 1941 in New York City, has made a popular comeback in the last couple of years. Here in Seattle, I often see patrons walking around bars with copper cups of the drink, which is how it’s traditionally served. Today I am sharing a riff on the classic cocktail that’s normally comprised of vodka, lime juice, and ginger beer.

The Moscow Mule is an easy drink to make at home and once you have the complimentary ingredients of lime juice and ginger beer you can start playing with the recipe and add your favorite ingredients. Though I thoroughly enjoy the tradition Mule with vodka, I was craving more flavors or maybe just a boozy boost. The ginger beer and lime are perfect for rum or bourbon as well, and I decided to create a fruit flair by adding raspberries, which gave this cocktail a fun color and taste. The spiciness of the rum and ginger beer made it perfect for my weekend.

Another idea is to make a mule bar for a cocktail or dinner party, where guests can choose their favorite spirit and seasonal addition. Just add some copper cups and you have an easy bar all set up, with everyone coming back for refills. So when you’re not in the mood for vodka, just add bourbon or rum to your next mule.

How The Rum Mule Is Made

To make a Rum Mule, you will need a shaker, highball glass, muddler, and a bar spoon. The original drink was served in a highball glass, but you can choose to use a copper mug, in true Mule fashion.

Besides the basic ingredients – which are ginger beer, lime juice, and rum – ice and simple syrup can also be used. Other ingredients, such as fruits, can be added to introduce preferred flavors and aromas. If you wish, you can use ginger ale instead of ginger beer.

    Dark ‘n Stormy Cocktail

So the story goes, combining ginger beer and rum in a cocktail first occurred in Bermuda right after World War I. It was meant to mimic the appearance of a storm blowing in off the sea. The official name for the cocktail, which is frequently referred to as Bermuda’s national drink, was Dark ‘n Stormy. It has since been trademarked by Gosling Brothers Limited. To be legally called Dark ‘n Stormy, the ingredients must include Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, and the proportions and directions in the recipe must be precisely followed. However, you can make a similar version without the trademark – the Dark and Stormy which uses any dark rums.

What Is The Difference Between Cranberry Cocktail And Cranberry Juice

Cranberry cocktail is a sweetened blend of juices while cranberry juice should be 100% unsweetened cranberry juice.

Ive had good luck finding unsweetened cranberry juice on the shelf-stable juice aisle at stores like Whole Foods and Sprouts, but I know others carry it, too. If youre having trouble finding it at your grocery, I would ask someone who works there and see if they can help direct you to it.

You can also purchase larger quantities of it online.
