Canadian Club 42 Year Old
This ultra-premium bottle is something youd expect more from a single malt scotch than a Canadian whisky. But Canadian Club produces some very good expressions, including this mature and flavorful spirit, the second release in the brands CC Chronicles series. Look for baking spice notes rounded out by brown sugar, honey and dried fruit.
Can You Make Whiskey At Home
Unfortunately, making whiskey at home is illegal in the United States. In fact, the distilling of any spirit at home is illegal under federal law. You can make wine and beer at home, but liquors like vodka, gin, moonshine, and whiskey cannot be made at home for personal use.
It is perfectly legal to own a still, which is what whiskey is distilled in. You can make essential oils, perfume, or even distilled water in it, so long as youre not producing liquor. In fact, its even legal to make ethanol for home fuel uses, provided you have a permit. Making whiskey at home is possible but not recommended, as it is illegal and potentially dangerous.

What Is Crown Royal
Crown Royal is the worlds top-selling Canadian whisky. The brand was created in 1939 by Samuel Bronfman, president of Seagram, to honor King George VI and Queen Elizabeths first trip to Canada. Crown Royal is now owned by Diageo, who purchased the brand in 2000 when the Seagram portfolio was dissolved.
Crown Royal doesnt fulfill the requirements to be a Scotch Whisky or a Whiskey. It is a blended Canadian whisky made from a mixture of corn, barley and rye distillates that are distilled and matured separately.
Ingredients You Need To Make The Whisky Cherry Coke Smash
Makes 2 drinks
- 1 ¼ cups fresh cherries, pitted
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 12 oz Coca Cola, chilled
Note: If fresh cherries arent available, you can substitute Maraschino cherries or frozen cherries. If youre using frozen cherries, be sure to let them thaw to make it easier to muddle them.
I used Crown Royal for this recipe, but its also delicious with a good Kentucky Bourbon. A bourbon and cherry coke is also delightful.
Serving idea: If you serve the drink over well-crushed ice, its kind of like a Cherry Crown and Coke slushie. Its particularly refreshing when you want an ice cold drink.
Another idea if you want to mix it up a bit is to add a drop or two of vanilla extract. It gives it a fun coke float kind of flavor. Or of course, you could use Crown Royal Vanilla as well.

How To Make The Crown Royal Peach Beach Drink
Grab a cocktail glass lets mix this drink!
Step 1: Pour one shot of Crown Peach into your glass. If you like your drinks a little stronger, add an extra 1/2 shot.
Step 2: Add in two shots of Pineapple Juice and 1.5 shots of Orange Juice.
Step 3: Add approximately 1 teaspoon of Grenadine. If youre concerned the Grenadine will make your drink too sweet for your tastes, skip it altogether. The fruit juices are plenty sweet and the Grenadine just adds more sweetness.
Step 4: Fill your glass with ice leaving a little room at the top.
Step 5: Top off with 7up for the added bubbly fizz and a light lemon-lime addition.
Step 6: Add pineapple chunks, pineapple slices and/or a peach slice for garnish.
Of course, if you have a drink umbrella, add it to make it really feel like a beach drink!

Tolkien Would Probably Drink Crown Royal
If you know your Canada which, as a proud geography-challenged American, you dont youll know that Crown Royal is produced in Manitoba, a central province squat on top of North Dakota and Minnesota. Crown Royal hails from a small town within Manitoba called Gimli, which is not only the name of an axe-wielding, elf-insulting, fearlessly questing dwarf, but is also Norse for Home of the Gods. True to the name, Gimli is home to epic statues like this. Next time someone says the purple bag is lame, go all Viking on them.
A Jewish Canadian Whisky For English Kings
So a rabbinical student meets the president of Seagrams at a Sephardic shul in Montreal. No, not the set up for a joke. Its the key to the soul of Crown Royal Deluxe the first, and to this day, flagship whisky of the Crown Royal brand. In 1943, Seagrams then-president Samuel Bronfman told visiting rabbinical student Solomon Maimon how his first two attempts at distilling Crown Royal were miserable failures. The recipe was only salvaged or, rather, saved when Bronfmans own rabbi told him to imbue the whisky with a spiritual purpose, yielding a smooth blend of no fewer than 50 whiskies and giving birth to a now-international drinks empire.

Is Crown Royal A Rye Whisky
Strictly speakingno. According to the exacting standards of American whisky production, a true rye must have 51% of rye in its mash bill, or specific mix of grains. Crown Royals base recipes differ from bottle to bottle, and some have quite a bit of ryebut not that much, and certainly without the ubiquity necessary to deem Crown Royal a rye whisky.
Instead, Crown Royal often uses corn and barley as their go-to-grains.
Crown Royal Vs Jack Daniels: Cost
Both Crown Royal and Jack Daniels are similarly priced. Youll be able to find them at most stores in the $22 $25 range for a 750 ml bottle. Crown Royal does tend to be the more expensive of the two, though. That being said, the difference is typically only a few dollars, so neither of these will break the bank.

Comparisons In The Canadian Whisky World
Known for its smooth taste and often affordable price point, Canadian whisky is quite popular. Obviously, Crown Royal dominates the landscape as an international brand. However, there are others available out there from smaller distilleries.
Canadian Club is a popular name heard as a choice for Canadian whisky in bars. While it lacks the mystique and potentially robust flavor that Crown Royal boasts, it certainly makes up for it in price point. A typical bottle of CC, as the locals call it, can come in around $20.
Canadian Mist is as simple as they come, offering one whole variety. Just one. While simplistic and maybe best reserved for mixers or an overly involved cocktail, it is easy on the wallet at $15 or so per bottle.
With the evolution of local distilleries, more and more small batch spirits are popping up on the landscape. Canadian whisky has not been excluded from this influx. Bottles from a more local place can range from $25 to $200 and up depending on the ingredients and distillation process. Many of the smaller distilleries create unique blends, as they can experiment further with smaller batches.
As you can see, there are certainly cheaper or more expensive options out there. It is simply about what you are expecting in a Canadian whisky and what you intend to do with it. Paying up for a brand like Crown Royal is usually best when sipping or creating whisky forward cocktails, while spending less is certainly reasonable when drinking with a heavier mixer.

Crown Royal Press Drink Recipe
We may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read our disclaimer.
The Crown Royal Press drink recipe makes the most of Crown Royal Canadian whisky. In fact, that makes up most of the drink. The other ingredients add a touch of citrus and spice.
Crown Royal has notes of vanilla, fruit and oak. Its a blended whisky thats tasty on its own, but even better in cocktails. Along with the whisky, this drink features some bitters, some lemon juice and a touch of lemon-lime soda.
That combination creates some spicy-citrus notes which enhance the vanilla and fruit flavors in the whisky. Be aware that this drink recipe makes no effort to disguise the flavor of the whisky the flavor is the whole point.
And the other ingredients act more as flavor enhancers than mixers. Its all about bringing out the very best notes of the Crown Royal.
The lemon-lime soda adds a little bit of sweetness, but not much. This is a mellow cocktail not sweet, but not too tart or tangy, either. Its less sweet than a Whiskey Sour, for example.
If you want to serve this with food, try it with steak. I love whisky and steak together. Check out this Pan-Seared Ribeye Steak with Blue Cheese Butter from Kitchen Swagger. Blue cheese is another item that pairs well with whisky, so this makes a great combo.

The Crown Royal Style
Crown Royal produces a number of blended whiskies and each is created using the finely tuned skill that has become a signature of Canadian whisky blenders. Creating the same taste in a single whiskey from the 50+ whiskies that can go into one of these is an art and the blenders at Crown Royal are some of its masters.
Crown Royal Deluxe is the bottle of Crown Royal that is the most common expression available. It is a blend of 50 different full-bodied Canadian whiskies that is then aged until deemed acceptable. Crown Royal has no age statement.
Crown Royal Black and Northern Harvest Rye are two of the other signature expressions produced by the brand. They also offer a Masters Series that shows the art of the Master Blender in an even finer style. And, in keeping with recent trends, Crown Royal produces an apple and a maple flavored whiskey as well.
It may have a great taste, but the one thing that makes Crown Royal stand out, even more, is that purple bag. Every bottle comes wrapped in a royal purple-colored cloth bag with gold trim that cinches around the bottle neck. You can always tell a Crown Royal fan by the occasional appearance of the purple bag that carries some precious stash of random items .
Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye
Before last year, many drinkers probably hadnt ever heard of Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye. The world learned of this whisky and reveled in its 100% rye mash bill, crazy high proof, and multi-dimensional aroma and palate.
This is the kind of whisky that needs multiple samplings to truly appreciate. I feel like I missed some of the aromas and flavors in the midst of a blind test and Im excited to return to it at a later date.

Canadian Club 100% Rye
Canadian Club is most known to modern drinkers as the whisky Don Draper enjoyed on Mad Men. This expression from the well-known brand definitely isnt the same one enjoyed by the ad man. Made with a mash bill of 100% rye grown in Alberta, this is spicy, peppery whisky for fans of super-bold, rye-based whiskies.
This is a fairly aggressive whisky. While there are notes of sweet vanilla and buttery caramel, the spicy, cracked black pepper flavor takes center stage I wish it was slightly more well-balanced.
What Is A Cocktail
Before getting into the different recipes, lets take a moment to discuss exactly what a cocktail is.
There are several conflicting theories about where the term cocktail comes from. But the most popular claim is that it is derived from the French word coquetier, which describes an eggcup-type measure.
In laymans terms, a cocktail is a mixed alcoholic drink. But theres more to it than that. A cocktail must include at least two ingredients, one of which must be alcoholic.
A typical cocktail can be mixed with one type of alcohol or with multiple spirits. It can consist of juices, teas, soft drinks, or even whole fruits.
Sometimes, the word cocktail is used interchangeably with any type of mixed drink, even those not alcoholic. It should be noted that a mixed drink that does not contain alcohol is actually referred to as a mocktail.
Mixed drinks had existed for centuries, dating back to the 1500s when the first punch was made. Yet, the first time that the word cocktail was publicly documented was in an 1806 newspaper.

American non-patriots, that is. During the American Revolution, an estimated 15 to 25 percent of the population remained loyal to the crown. Their solution? Head up north, where they could continue to genuflect to a guy in a fancy cape. Thankfully, at least some loyalists became what were known as gristmill operators, eventually repaying their abandonment of Murica with delicious Canadian whisky.
