Crown Royal is the worlds top-selling Canadian whisky. The brand was created in 1939 by Samuel Bronfman, president of Seagram, to honor King George VI and Queen Elizabeths first trip to Canada. Crown Royal is now owned by Diageo, who purchased the brand in 2000 when the Seagram portfolio was dissolved.
Crown Royal doesnt fulfill the requirements to be a Scotch Whisky or a Whiskey. It is a blended Canadian whisky made from a mixture of corn, barley and rye distillates that are distilled and matured separately.
Ingredients You Need To Make The Whisky Cherry Coke Smash
Makes 2 drinks
- 1 ¼ cups fresh cherries, pitted
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 12 oz Coca Cola, chilled
Note: If fresh cherries arent available, you can substitute Maraschino cherries or frozen cherries. If youre using frozen cherries, be sure to let them thaw to make it easier to muddle them.
I used Crown Royal for this recipe, but its also delicious with a good Kentucky Bourbon. A bourbon and cherry coke is also delightful.
Serving idea: If you serve the drink over well-crushed ice, its kind of like a Cherry Crown and Coke slushie. Its particularly refreshing when you want an ice cold drink.
Another idea if you want to mix it up a bit is to add a drop or two of vanilla extract. It gives it a fun coke float kind of flavor. Or of course, you could use Crown Royal Vanilla as well.

The Crown Royal Press drink recipe makes the most of Crown Royal Canadian whisky. In fact, that makes up most of the drink. The other ingredients add a touch of citrus and spice.
Crown Royal has notes of vanilla, fruit and oak. Its a blended whisky thats tasty on its own, but even better in cocktails. Along with the whisky, this drink features some bitters, some lemon juice and a touch of lemon-lime soda.

This is the kind of whisky that needs multiple samplings to truly appreciate. I feel like I missed some of the aromas and flavors in the midst of a blind test and Im excited to return to it at a later date.

Canadian Club is most known to modern drinkers as the whisky Don Draper enjoyed on Mad Men. This expression from the well-known brand definitely isnt the same one enjoyed by the ad man. Made with a mash bill of 100% rye grown in Alberta, this is spicy, peppery whisky for fans of super-bold, rye-based whiskies.
Bottom Line:
This is a fairly aggressive whisky. While there are notes of sweet vanilla and buttery caramel, the spicy, cracked black pepper flavor takes center stage I wish it was slightly more well-balanced.
