Does Whiskey Sour Have Egg

What Is A Whiskey Sour And Why Is It Called That

How to Make the Best Whiskey Sour (2 ways!)

No funny business here.

A whiskey sour is called just that because it is a whiskey-based drink that happens to be sour. A classic whiskey sour is made with whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg whites. It’s one of my favorite drinks because of the sweet and sour combination.

And before you ask no, I do not consider a whiskey sour a ‘girly drink’, because if a drink is tasty, it should be tasty for both genders – don’t you think? A manly man can order a piña colada or a mojito and not feel awkward about it.

The whiskey sour is a very old drink. First written down in 1862 in The Bartender’s Guide by Jerry Thomas. It was, however, known for a century before this. When sailors ventured overseas, they struggled with malnutrition and scurvy and germs and whatnot.

Citrus is great to prevent scurvy, and whiskey was safe to drink as opposed to dirty water.

In a way, that was how the whiskey sour got its origin. Read more about this from The Alcohol Professor.

What Is A Whiskey Sour

By strict definition, a whiskey sour is a mixed drink containing whiskey, lemon juice, and sugar. To many, though, a whiskey sour is one of a family of old-fashioned cocktails reminiscent of the mid 20th century. In fact, the U.S. Bartenders Guide chose the citrus-flavored cocktail as representative of the 1960-70 decade.

A standard whiskey sour recipe contains 2 ounces of blended whiskey, the juice of half a lemon, 1/2 teaspoon of powdered sugar. Add ice and shake to blend all ingredients. Strain into a chilled sour glass and garnish with a half-slice of lemon and a cherry. The addition of 1 teaspoon egg white before shaking adds a frothy top to the drink.

The sour recipe is the basis for many similar drinks. By substituting various liquors in place of whiskey, you can mix an amaretto, vodka or tequila sour. Other drinks in the sour family include margaritas, daiquiris and sidecars. Daiquiris contain rum, lime juice, and syrup and are usually served without ice in a cocktail glass. The sidecar combines one part lemon juice, one part triple sec liqueur with one part brandy. The margarita is created with tequila, triple sec and lemon or lime juice.

Crack An Egg Per Drink

This the to go method when you are just making one or two cocktails at a time at home. It is not the fastest method but you have almost zero waste of having the egg whites just sitting around in a container.

You do this in case you drop a piece of eggshell or yolk in. Easier to remove and an egg is cheaper to replace than replacing other ingredients.

I Want To Make It A Ginger Whiskey Sour

Bourbon Whiskey Sour

Yay, me too! I love ginger whiskey sours. And it’s almost as simple as making a traditional whiskey sour. When you make your simple syrup, you make a ginger simple syrup instead.

For example, you may add ½ cup water and ½ cup sugar into a saucepan, along with 1-inch ginger roughly chopped. Stir until sugar is dissolved and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Let it cool to room temperature with the ginger still in it, this infuses the simple syrup with delicious ginger.

You can do this with any thinkable flavor. I’ve used rhubarb stalks, apricot, rosemary, and so many other things. Ginger is also a classic, so I’m putting it here as an option for you.

Since whiskey is the star in this classic cocktail, youll want to use a high-quality one. That doesnt necessarily mean the most expensive bottle you can find but definitely purchase a mid-price range whiskey. Bourbon is a type of whiskey and thats what is normally used and what we prefer it for its sweeter flavor.

Why Does Whiskey Sour Have Egg

The egg white will not make your cocktail taste like egg. I was very skeptical the first time I tried a cocktail with egg white.

When you shake the cocktail in the shaker, the egg white breaks up and becomes foamy, adding volume and richness to the drink with some foam on top.

You can absolutely skip the egg if desired and still have a delicious fall cocktail.

If you don’t have a cocktail shaker at home, that’s no problem. You can still mix your whisky cocktail using alternatives. All you need is a clean, sealable container with a sufficiently large capacity and a sufficiently large opening. For example, washed-out preserving jars or jam jars, or even fresh-keeping boxes are suitable for this.

What Other Of Sour Cocktails Are There

The basic recipe of three ingredients, spirit, lemon juice and sugar syrup, can be found in a wide variety of cocktails. Some of them still count as classics in cocktail history and are still popularly served and drunk. Cocktails based on this recipe are divided into three categories: Sour, Fizz and Collins.

Sours are basically the original form of this type of cocktail. In addition to the classic whiskey sour, there are variants such as the Pisco Sour with “Pisco” brandy from Peru, Amaretto Sour, or Margarita.

Fizzes differ from sours because they are additionally filled with soda water. The best-known fizzes are the Gin Fizz or the Ramos Gin Fizz. It is not always possible to distinguish between Fizzes and Collins. The biggest difference is not in the ingredients, but in the preparation. While the Fizz is built in the serving glass, the Collins is built in the shaker and then strained into the serving glass.

Whisky Sour Without Egg White Or With Egg White

Some who hear about a cocktail with raw protein for the first time are sceptical at first. You can’t blame them, because salmonella can actually multiply in raw eggs and can lead to a salmonella infection when consumed. Therefore, it is very important: Only use eggs that are as fresh as possible and stored in a cool place! Then the least can happen. If you still have concerns, you should prepare the Whisky Sour with the recipe without protein. Personally, I have never had any problems with salmonella from the many Whisky Sours I have drunk so far.

If you use super fresh eggs, the egg white will give you a rounder taste and combines the flavours of the other ingredients nicely. In addition, shaking with egg white gives a nice head of foam, which enhances the cocktail visually. I personally like the Whisky Sour with egg white best.

Why Is Jack Daniels Not Bourbon

There are a few reasons why Jack Daniels is not bourbon. The first is that it is distilled at 140 proof, or 70% alcohol by volume, which is below the maximum allowed for bourbon of 160 proof, or 80% alcohol by volume. Second, Jack Daniels is charcoal filtered before it is bottled, whereas bourbon does not undergo this process. Finally, Jack Daniels is made in Tennessee, whereas bourbon must be made in Kentucky.

Is Whisky Sour A Mans Drink

Whiskey sour is a drink that can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of gender. Sour Mix, Sweet & Sour Mix, Whiskey Sour Mix, Daiquiris Mix, and even Margarita Mix are all variations on the theme of sour and sweet. The vast majority of commercially accessible items are little more than a bucket of chemicals masquerading as high-quality products, with only a few notable exceptions.

How To Make A Whiskey Sour From Scratch

Place whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white in a cocktail shaker. Don’t add in the ice just yet. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds. This will incorporate the egg white properly.

If you are making more than 1 drink, do not increase the number of egg whites, that is not necessary. 1 egg white will be enough for 2 drinks .

Add ice and shake again, for around 15 seconds more, to chill the drink. Strain into a glass using a fine-mesh sieve. Garnish with a lemon slice and serve!

Serve immediately with a slice of lemon, and a maraschino cherry if you feel like it, as that’s the traditional way of serving it. I just have bad associations with these cherries, so I don’t like them as decor. It’s just me, not the cherry.

The History Of Whisky Sours

The cocktail variant “Sour” was mentioned in writing in 1862 in the book “Bar Tender’s Guide by Jerry Thomas.

The idea of mixing lemon, sugar and spirits was born much earlier, on board the many ships that were trading at that time. On these ships there was often a shortage of water and the sailors suffered from the dangerous disease scurvy due to vitamin C deficiency. Lemons and spirits could be kept even at sea and the vitamin C in the lemon prevented the spread of scurvy. Whenever the sailors went ashore, this recipe spread and sours with rum or brandy became the standard of any bar that was worth its salt.

The Whisky Sour was first mentioned in January 1870 in the US American daily newspaper “The Waukesha Plaindealer“.

The popularity of Whisky Sour continued to grow and it quickly became a classic that no bar could do without. 1879 the great American daily newspaper “The Atlanta Daily Constitution” wrote: “When American meets American, then comes the Whiskey Sourâ.

Best Practices: For A Perfect Whiskey Sour Use High

To create any sour-style cocktail, all you need is a base spirit, citrus, and sugar. Its a simple formula, yet perfecting simplicity is incredibly nuanced especially when it comes to crafting an age-old classic like the Whiskey Sour. The cocktail has taken on various forms over the years, but the common version served at bars today is made with the preferred whiskey of the day, bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white a later addition to the classic sour.

The sour cocktail derives from the punch the monarch of all cocktails, and a popular drink style originating in the 1600s. According to drinks historian David Wondrich, the punch cocktail had a long history that started with British sailors who turned to making mixed drinks with local ingredients after their beer spoiled while sailing in the tropics. Nearly 100 years later, the cocktail-trendsetting British sailors accidentally created the sour cocktail as well by mixing the citrus juices that they were drinking to prevent scurvy with whichever spirits they had on board at the time. But it wasnt until the 19th century that the Whiskey Sour came into vogue.

We chatted about the dos and donts for crafting the best Whiskey Sour with modern bartenders who have some strong opinions on which whiskey to use, whether or not egg white should be included, and more. By following these five tips, youll be on your way to mastering the Whiskey Sour and its variations in no time.

For Allergy Sufferers: Chicken Egg Alternatives In The Whisky Sour

Some people cannot eat eggs because they have a protein allergy and are therefore allergic to certain proteins in the egg white or yolk. If you need more information on allergies, check out the website of the American Allergy and Asthma Federation.

The treatment for an egg allergy is often a change in diet that completely avoids eating eggs. In that case, you should check out our vegan alternative. However, some people can tolerate eggs under certain circumstances. The body’s immune response is only ever directed against one of the proteins contained in the egg. Since some of the proteins are not heat resistant, it happens that hard-boiled or double-fried eggs are tolerated after all. However, this alternative is out of the question for mixing a whisky sour with a chicken egg allergy, because the egg must be processed raw.

Happily, there are other alternatives that can be used to make a whisky sour with a nice head without using a chicken egg: Quail eggs, goose eggs or duck eggs. At this point, however, I would like to point out one more thing. Although for some people who are allergic to chicken eggs, quail eggs can be a good alternative, in each individual case, medical diagnostics must rule out the possibility of cross-allergies. So if you have an allergy, check with your doctor first to see if you can use quail eggs or other eggs.

When preparing quail eggs, check with your doctor first.

There are four main types of whiskey: Scotch, Bourbon, Irish, and Canadian. Each has its own distinct flavor and history.

Classic Boston Sour â A Couple Cooks

Once youve experienced the smooth, frothy meringue of an egg-white cocktail, its hard to forget. The whiskey sour, a combination of whiskey, lemon, sugar, bitters and egg white , has undergone a renaissance and become a serious and delicious cocktail worthy of any great bar.

This shift comes with the nuance of a light, airy texture built on the protein of the egg white, which doesnt add anything to the flavor of the drink but does seem to even out all the notes of spirit, citrus and sweetener in a pillowy cushion. Egg-white drinks are typically a two-step process: First you shake without ice to create the meringue, then you add ice to chill and dilute the drink like any shaken cocktail. Shaking without ice, or dry shaking, first ideally with room-temperature eggs will lead to a smooth, white foam of protein bubbles.

Since San Francisco fixture Beretta opened its doors in 2008, theyve featured a whiskey-sour variation that has won over almost every patron with the slightest doubt about having an egg-white cocktail. Their take on the Rattlesnake, a drink originally listed in the Savoy cocktail book in 1930, is almost as simple as the whiskey sour. With the twist of using maple syrup, rye whiskey and Peychauds bitters, its a flavor combination few can resist. Plus, it pairs well with the restaurants specialty pizzas.

Try both, and if you have any doubts on why egg-white cocktails are worth the effort and minuscule risk, let the Rattlesnake be your gateway.
