Compared To Other Brandy Brands

Paul Masson

They say their prices determine the exclusivity of brandies. The California-produced Paul Masson is an American Spirits business that produces their brandy in the United States. Hennessy

Hennessy originated from the same region in France as Courvoisier but was established 50 years earlier. But, whats the difference between Hennessy and Courvoisier? The company uses the same special crus as Courvoisier cognac, which assures the quality of their produce. They sell their cognacs above Courvoisiers asking price: A 750 ml bottle of a Hennessy VS is sold around $33.99 to $38.99 relative to Courvoisier VS Cognac, which costs around $22.99 to $24.99. Remy Martin

Remy Martin is considered to be one of Courvoisiers competitors in history. Courvoisier Brandy: A Brief Background

The liquor has a rich history born when Emmanuel Courvoisier and Louis Gallois developed it in 1809. Soon after, the beverage would become the flavor of the ruling class in society. Napoleon Bonaparte was particularly fond of the Courvoisier.

This brand was also the one distributed at the grand opening of the Eiffel Tower. This is a testament to the grandeur of these world-class spirits from France, in levels that shame those of wine and beer. To date, its been featured in films like Diamonds are Forever and rapped about by the likes of P Diddy and Busta Rhymes, which is proof of its world-class review.

The Moments That Made Us

Louis Gallois set up a wine and spirits company, Gallois Cellars, on the outskirts of Paris with his original business partner Emmanuel Courvoisier. Gallois had been developing contacts for many years, particularly with the upper échelons of Napoléons imperial army. These relationships proved successful many years later when Napoléon Bonaparte took the throne in 1804.

A Cognac Fit For An Emperor

Courvoisier Napoleon VSOP Cognac 1 Litre

As legend has it, in 1811, our cognac reached French Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte who made a personal visit to the Courvoisier cellar after enjoying what he tasted.

Many years after this initial meeting, Napoléon III, nephew and heir to Napoléon Bonaparte, also personally requested Courvoisier and awarded the Maison Courvoisier the much sought-after title of Fournisseur Officiel de la Maison de l’Empereur, or the official supplier of Napoléon’s Imperial Court in 1869. Because of Napoléon’s stamp of approval, Courvoisier became beloved throughout Europe and was served at notable historic joyous occasions and graced the tables of many royal courts.

The Courvoisier history starts at the beginning of the 19th century with Emmanuel Courvoisier and his partner Louis Gallois opening a wine and spirits business in the Parisian suburb Bercy.

In 1811 Napoleon visited their business in Bercy and was hosted by Louis Gallois, the Director, and Emmanuel Courvoisier. Legend says that Napoleon brought various barrels of their cognac with him to Saint Helena.

In 1843, Emmanuel´s son Felix Courvoisier and his partner Jules Gallois established the COURVOISIER® business. When Felix died in 1866, his cousins and partners -The Curlier brothers- took the reins of COURVOISIER®.

The reputation of COURVOISIER® as the finest existing cognac was strengthened by Napoleon III who granted COURVOISIER® the title of “Official Supplier to the Imperial Court” in 1869. This certificate is now displayed in the COURVOISIER® Jarnac museum, with other Napoleonic artefacts.

In 1909, the English family Simon took the reins of the business COURVOISIER® and started to construct the COURVOISIER® brand and develop its global reputation. The two internationally recognized symbols of the brand, the Napoleon silhouette and the Josephine bottle, were introduced in 1950.

It May Be The Original Napoleon Brandy But Courvoisier Cognac Has Managed To Establish A Thoroughly Modern Appeal Heres How It Achieved Its World

*This feature was originally published in the December 2014 issue of The Spirits Business magazine

Cognac has always been an aspirational spirit in the way it is packaged, priced and promoted, particularly when you get beyond VSOP. This was distilled into just seven words in 2004 in a UK advert for Courvoisier XO: Dont just stand there drooling. Get rich.

With more than a nod to Wall Streets Gordon Gekko, the ad made no mention of Napoleon. The French emperor has been the brands inspiration since he visited the cellars of Emmanuel Courvoisier and Louis Gallois in 1811, two years after they had set up as wine and spirits merchants in the Parisian suburb of Bercy. According to company folklore he liked the Cognac so much he took some with him on exile after his defeat at Waterloo.

Its one of the most beautiful and moving stories, says Francois Balzini, VP marketing, Europe, Middle East & Africa, for brand-owner Beam Suntory. When Napoleon was exiled to St. Helena in the mid-Atlantic in 1815, he took his boat to La Rochelle and on the way, stopped at Jarnac and picked up a few barrels. It was his desert island spirit.

The business moved from Bercy to Jarnac in 1828, and before long the new generation were doing well enough to build a grand château on the banks of the Charente that is still Courvoisiers HQ. Yet it was only in 1909, when the firm was bought by the Anglo-French Simon family, that Courvoisier really began to dine out on Napoleon.

A Collector’s Item Fit For A King: A Courvoisier Vsop 1960 Cognac

Courvoisier Napoleon Cognac National Cognac Day Review

This very bottle was procured following the liquidation of an estate, and has been stored in a basement.

One of the best things about collector’s Cognac is that one can often trace the unique history of each Cognac house through the oldest of bottles. With its long neck and short bottom, this very old Courvoisier VSOP decanter from 1960 is the sure ancestor of the current VSOP from this historic house.

This very Courvoisier VSOP is over 60 years old, and will be a unique blend of eaux-de-vie selected from the Fine Champagne growth area, aged between 8 and 12 years all those years ago.

Courvoisier can be considered a very regal Cognac indeed. And this collector’s item is certainly fit for a king – in fact, it even features a seal that states “By Appointment of King George VI.” King George, or “Bertie” as he was known, reigned as the King of England from 1936 until 1952.

As a result, he was recognized as a symbol of British determination during the Second World War. This Cognac is, therefore, a precious time capsule from a significant historical moment.

This exclusive Cognac is made up of eaux-de-vie from two regions in the Cognac appellation, each as famous and exclusive as each other. Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, with their chalky soil and rolling hills, are both considered amongst the premier regions for Cognac.

Brandy Vs Cognac: Whats The Difference

Courvoisier Napoleon VSOP Cognac 1 Litre

By now, youve probably noticed that Courvoisier refers to their spirits as cognac, not brandy. But whats the difference? Brandy and cognac are effectively the same thing, but cognac is a very specific type of brandy. Cognac is produced in the region of Cognac, France, and only brandy made in this area is allowed to be cognac .

Cognacs are held to a very strict and specific distilling process, which often results in higher retail prices due to how exclusive bottles are. In fact, the distilling process is so specific that theres even a particular type of grape that Courvoisier must use in order for their spirits to qualify as cognac. Their cognac is distilled in copper distillers and then aged in oak barrels for several years to draw out the smooth flavors of the wood.

How Its Made

Cognac Review: Courvoisier VSOP

Courvoisier is made using old techniques and modern technology. The distillation process of Courvoisier is similar to that of whiskey, but instead of grains, only the finest fruits from 3 grape varietals are used: Piquepoul, Trebbiano, and Colombard harvested from 4 crus in the cognac region, which are Fins Bois, Grande, and Petite Champagne, and the Borderies.

The cognac is distilled twice using alembic pot stills. The eau-de-vie is used then stored to mature for 200 years in French oak barrels.
