Brandi Carlile At The Gorge 2021

Like A Family Reunion

Brandi Carlile – The Story live at The Gorge 2022

The smoke and eerily orange orb hanging above the canyon contrasted with the breezier vibes of country-rock great Sheryl Crow, who took the stage after roots rocker Amythyst Kiah opened the second annual Echoes Through the Canyon concert. Crows set of softly twangy soothers offered a bit of Southern comfort amid the confluence of conditions that werent exactly ideal. But all was right by the time Carlile joined her for a carefree duet on Crows If It Makes You Happy, giving the crowd a welcome jolt.

Crow would later return the favor, accompanying Carlile who recalled watching Crow perform at the Gorge during the formative Lilith Fairs of her youth for a spellbinding Rocket Man cover.

Carliles first post-shutdown get-together with her home state fans well, second if you count Thursdays semisecret Neptune show for fan club members had the familiarity of old friends picking up where they left off after time apart. The crowd knew when to hush for Carlile and Phil and Tim Hanseroths pristine harmonies and when to holler for those sustained power notes as predictably as the laugh track on your favorite sitcom.

Oh my, friends, its good to be with you, Carlile said, after leaning into the down-home country qualities of her voice on Hard Way Home.

Family reunions rarely go down without at least a little drama. But musically, Carliles two-hour set struck all the right chords.

Brandi Carlile helped put the surprise event together. The singer-songwriter, who hails from Western Washington, is assembling another Joni Jam for June 10 at the Gorge. Carlile will open the show. She also will perform her annual Echoes Through the Canyon concert on June 9 with special guests to be named later. Sheryl Crow joined Carlile last summer.

Mitchell, 78, who is considered one of the greatest songwriters of her generation, has been under the radar since suffering a brain aneurysm in 2015. Mitchell, who performed seated in a golden throne at Newport, shocked Carlile and the music world by delivering a 13-song set last summer, which featured such classics as “Both Sides Now,””A Case of You” and “Big Yellow Taxi.”

Large-scale concerts have resumed in Washington and with them comes the return of a budding tradition from one of our brightest home state stars at a landmark venue.

After the pandemic delayed Brandi Carliles second annual Echoes Through the Canyon concert by a year, the Maple Valley Grammy slayer is heading back to the Gorge Amphitheatre Aug. 14 with support from Sheryl Crow and roots-fusing rocker Amythyst Kiah. The Gorge bash, which will also be livestreamed through VEEP , wont be Carliles first gig since pandemic restrictions eased. But it will be one of her first shows since announcing her forthcoming album In These Silent Days, a top-to-bottom stunner arriving Oct. 1 that finds Carlile making even bigger creative strides than she and the Hanseroth twins did on 2018s .

We caught up with Carlile ahead of the show to discuss Echoes Through the Canyon, her knee-buckling new single Right On Time and pandemic voyages aboard her new boat, named after a classic Elton John album . Our conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

Carlile’s gone increasingly big with her birthday weekend blowouts at the landmark Washington venue, reuniting the surviving members of Soundgarden in 2021. But the 2023 edition looks to be the biggest yet, expanding to two nights June 9-10. The first will feature a headlining set from Carlile and her band, while Mitchell and the “Joni Jam” headlines night two, with Carlile opening. Friday night’s opener and the full crew of Joni Jam participants is not yet known.
