  • Best For Beginners: Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon Whiskey

Because of the high alcohol content, Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon might seem like an aggressive choice for a novice whiskey drinker, but beginners typically start with ice, which substantially shuts down the flavors.

Wild Turkey 101 and its high rye mash aged in white American oak easily stands its ground against even the largest cube. Plus, its a classic whiskey with archetypical bourbon flavors like caramel, cinnamon, and char. As whiskey newbies level up their ability to enjoy more intensity, they can reduce the amount of ice or water they add and suss out new and more subtle notes along the way.

    ABV: 101 Proof | Age: Between 6-8 years | Volume: 750 milliliters

Flavored whiskey can be a bit tricky. Some of it can hardly be called whiskey at all, but Knob Creek Maple is made with all the craft and care of the labels original expression with a hint of maple sweetness that complements the traditional bourbon flavors of caramel, vanilla, and oak.

A pleasant dose of smoke helps give this whiskey balance and prevent the sugary quality from becoming cloying. Its a lovely addition to enhance your cocktail repertoire, and if you are keen on living a bit dangerously, it makes a fun adult ice cream topping.

ABV: 90 Proof | Age: No Age Statement | Volume: 750 milliliters

Can You Get 50 Year Old Whisky

Whisky casks older than 50 years have typically lost between 60 and 80% of their liquid to the angel shares. Whisky thats 50 years old makes an elegant gift for fathers day, the holidays, or a 50th birthday. Then again, they are exceedingly rare whiskies and should only be reserved for the deserving.

The Oldest Whiskies You Can Buy

There are a lot of bucket lists that include drinking really old whiskey and in some cases, a decades old bottle of whiskey really is a fulfilling experience. The older whiskey gets, the more time its had to develop complex flavors and character, making it a more interesting sip. But people should also realize, getting older doesnt guarantee that its going to be better, only that its going to be more expensive, and you definitely dont have to spend that much to get a great tasting whiskey. Wed much rather get thirty or forty bucks together and drink a good bourbon or rye than drop a couple hundred or even a couple thousand on what could amount to chewing the inside of an old oak barrel. Because what we found pretty quickly was, the alternate title for this list could easily be, The 6 Most Expensive Liquids You Wont Believe You Just Spent Money On.

    Why Is Whiskey Aged

Why is whiskey aged? Well, similarly to many other longstanding traditions, the practice of barrel aging grew out of necessity. Early producers and transporters of wine used wooden barrels to ferment and then ship their products. Though, the practice has withstood the test of time because, coincidentally, long term storage in barrels has a positive effect on the character and smoothness of most alcoholic beverages. Early consumers of these beverages noticed that the longer the beverages had been stored in barrels, the better they tasted. Thus, the demand for barrel aged wine and spirits was born.

  • What’s The Difference Between Scotch And Whiskey How Scotch Is Different From Other Types Of Whiskies

    • Whiskey is a broad term for distilled grain that’s been aged in casks.
    • Scotch is a term used outside of Scotland to refer to Scottish-made whisky.
    • “Whiskey” is the spelling for American-made whiskey, while “whisky” is the spelling for Scottish-made versions.

What’s the difference between Scotch and whiskey? The answer is at once simple and complex.

The simple part: Whiskey is a distilled spirit made from fermented grains and aged in wooden barrels. There are many different types of whiskey based on style of production and country of origin.

The complex part: In the US, the most popular types of whiskies are the ones made at home bourbon and rye. Canada and Ireland are also known for their whiskies. Scotch whisky, referred to as just “Scotch” outside of Scotland, is a type of whisky made in Scotland. Within Scotland, the spirit is simply referred to as whisky.

As a type of whisky, Scotch has its own set of specifications to be called Scotch, not to mention a rich history and tradition surrounding the spirit. These unique requirements result in an incredibly nuanced spirit that’s worthy of any discerning palate. Here’s what you need to know.

Important: The “whiskey” spelling is used for American and Irish whiskey. Meanwhile, “whisky” is used by the rest of the world, including Scotland, Canada, and Japan. The complicated part is matching the correct spelling with the correct country of origin. You’ll see both versions through this story.

    Types Of Scotch Whisky

“You can break Scotch into two main categories, single malts, and blended Scotches,” Allardice says. “There are some very fundamental differences in how they’re made.” These two types of whiskies account for the overwhelming majority of scotch consumption.

    • Single malt Scotch: Single malt whiskies are prized for their richness and complexity. To be considered a single malt, the Scotch must be produced only from malted barley, then distilled and aged at a single distillery using copper pot stills. The Macallan, Glenfiddich, and Lagavulin are all examples of distilleries that produce single malt scotch.
    • Blended Scotch: Blended scotch is made by combining a single malt whisky with what’s known as a grain whisky. “Blended scotches are the backbone of the industry,” Allardice says. “About 80% of scotch consumed globally is blended.” Popular brands like Johnnie Walker and Dewars are blended scotches.

The brand takes the pot-distilled spirit and ages it in both ex-bourbon barrels and Oloroso sherry butts. The typical Redbreast 12-year-old is bottled at 80 proof, while the Cask Strength clocks in at a substantially higher 111.6 proof, which gives the juice more intense flavors and aromas. Its a fruity dram, rich with big spicy notes, a pop of vanilla, and a strong and long finish.

How Long Does Oak Aging Take

Fantastic results can be achieved in a relatively short amount of time with home aging. This is because the surface to liquid ratio of DIY aging kits is much higher than that of barrels. The commercial whiskey industry ages their product in 53 gallon barrels to achieve a better economy of scale. In small batch aging using oak sticks in a small container there is more wooden surface area in contact with the whiskey. It’s less efficient from a materials standpoint but much more efficient from a time and aging standpoint. All of that extra surface area rapidly accelerates aging of the spirits. Aged perfection that takes years to achieve in 53 gallon barrels can be accomplished in a matter of days/weeks with charred oak sticks.

The benefits of aging can be negated if too much of the wood flavor is imparted to the whiskey. “Over oaking” your spirit is a definite possibility. Every few days or weeks, a small sample should be drawn from the vessel to ascertain quality of aging. Once the whiskey has achieved the color and smoothness of your liking, transfer it to a glass bottle or jar for long term storage.
