The Louisville-based distiller is known for its diligent process with every batch blended to taste to create an award-winning whiskey. It was also among the first American whiskey producers to employ a secondary finishing process broadly across its portfolio and it continues to be a leader in this space.

Angel’s Envy produces finished whiskeys typically aged four to six years in new, charred white oak barrels then blended to meet their ideal flavour profile. In the final stages of production, Angel’s Envy bourbon is finished for up to six additional months in port barrels from Portugal then blended again once the taste is perfected.

How To Drink Angel’s Envy Bourbon
Angel’s Envy is not a budget bourbon. Though the Port Cask is reasonably priced for a premium whiskey, you’ll still likely want to enjoy it wisely. To pay respect to the craftsmanship that went into making it, tasting it straight is highly recommended. Pouring a shot over a large piece of ice and letting it rest for a few minutes will open up the bourbon and display its wonderful aroma and taste as well.
After experiencing the bourbon in each of those venues, you’ll have a good sense of cocktails that are worthy of this fine whiskey. This is not one that you’ll want to heavily dilute or pair with strong flavors. What Is Angel’s Envy Bourbon Made From
Angel’s Envy started out as a one-bottle brand in 2011. It was designed by Lincoln Henderson, the former Brown-Forman master distiller and creator of Woodford Reserve. Henderson is a legend in the industry with over 40 years of experience, and that is reflected in the quality of this bourbon.
The mash bill of Angel’s Envy is made up of 72 percent corn, 18 percent rye, and 10 percent malted barley. Each of the grains is locally sourced and non-GMO. The original expression is aged for 4 to 6 years in American white oak barrels, per the legal requirements for bourbon. The process is unique in that the whiskey is finished in former ruby port wine barrels for an additional 3 to 6 months. Each batch matures at a slightly different rate and is exposed to varying weather patterns, so the aging ranges give the distiller’s freedom to taste the whiskey and pull it from the barrel only when its ready. It is bottled at 43.3 percent alcohol by volume .
The name “Angel’s Envy” plays off a term that distillers often use for aged distilled spirits. In the barrel, it’s expected that a certain percentage of liquor is lost to evaporation, called the “angel’s share.” The thought is that this whiskey is so good that the angels are envious that they didn’t get more.

Angels Envy is made from a mash bill consisting of corn , rye , and malted barley . It uses only locally-sourced, non-GMO grains, with the original expression aged for four to six years.
American white oak barrels are used during the initial aging process. Afterward, the whisky is aged a further three to six months in barrels that previously held ruby port wine.
Angels Envy isnt manufactured according to a strict schedule or production process. Instead, each batch is allowed to mature as needed to produce the optimum smell and flavor characteristics. Angles Envy Distillery Goes West To Hire Owen Martin As Its 1st Master Distiller Since Founder Wes Henderson
Angels Envy Distillery on Whiskey Row in downtown Louisville, Kentucky has hired its first Master Distiller since its founding when the late Kentucky Hall of Famer and Angels Envy Co-founder and Master Distiller Lincoln Henderson started the company in 2010. Sadly, Henderson passed away in 2013 just a few months prior to the official ribbon cutting of the Angels Envy Distillery.
There are two things that stand out about this hire. First, Martin does not have a typical Kentucky distilling pedigree that you might expect for a distillery the size of Angels Envy. Instead, Martin started in the craft world as Lead Distiller at Rock Town Distillery in Arkansas. After a couple years he moved West to Stranahans Colorado Whiskey in Denver, Colorado where hes been for the last six year. Most Master Distiller hiring announcements go the other way where a Kentucky distiller goes West.
The other thing that makes this interesting is that the only thing Stranahans makes is 100% single malt whiskey. Single malt whiskies continue to grow across the country though the bulk of distilleries dabbling in single malts tend to be in the West, not all but a lot of them. Could we one day see an Angels Envy single malt whiskey?

Sweetly interesting. Aroma is soft and sweet with layers of sweets without much in the way of rustic notes to balance it out Palate follows suite being sweet all around without much to balance it out Finish picks up more nutty notes and kind of ends like a PB& J.
Yknow, the finish actually that sums up this whiskey, an oak-aged PB& J. Overall the Angels Envy Bourbon Whiskey is sweet, too sweet for me. I know some love it but for me its borderline cloying. The port sweetness doesnt fully compliment so much as take over and pull away from the bourbon essence.

Speaking of craft, a large portion of the bottles considered this year came from independent brands that source their whiskey from Indiana . While this practice has been looked down upon by some in the past, the majority of brands employing that strategy now are increasingly transparent about their whiskeys origins. Producers in that field who made it onto this list did so by taking the spirit in a new direction via a finishing technique or proprietary aging process, or by blending with their own whiskey and achieving harmonious results.

How To Enjoy Angels Envy
Angels Envy isnt what you would call budget bourbon, although it isnt exorbitantly priced either. Even though the Port Cask comes in at an attractive price point, it is still a premium whiskey deserving of more reverential settings.
Like all good whiskies, Angels Envy is best enjoyed straight. You could also pour a shot over a single large chunk of ice and let it rest for a couple of minutes. This opens up the palette and unlocks all the wonderful aromas and flavors described above.
If you opt to include Angels Envy in a cocktail, remember not to dilute it too heavily or overpower it with strongly-flavored ingredients. Weve found that classic recipes work best, especially those with only a few elements that complement and enhance the bourbon rather than mask its rich flavors.
