The Untold Truth Of Don Julio Tequila

What To Know Before Taking Another Sip Of Don Julio Tequila

You can keep those martinis, whether they’re shaken or stirred. So, what’s our preference for a good time? Well, that comes with a rim of salt and a juicy slice of lime . It’s the epitome of a good time with great friends. The sauce that’s led to many a blurry and booze-fueled evening complete with hazy next mornings. It’s tequila. With great fanfare courtesy of everyone from celebrities, like P. Diddy and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, to your own hometown bar, it’s undeniable that quite a few people are fans of this classic liquor.

But what exactly is tequila? Produced only in Mexico, it’s a distilled spirit made from the blue agave plant. It also follows strict regulations, like all agave used for production must be authenticated by the Tequila Regulatory Council . While the history of tequila dates back to the ancient Aztecs where it was first mentioned in 1000 CE, we would not be here talking about it today without the vision and inspiration of one man: Don Julio Gonzalez. He is the entrepreneur behind perhaps the most recognized brand of tequila in the world and is also attributed for making tequila a household name.

Before you knock back another shot, let’s take a dive into the spirited life of Don Julio Gonzalez and his mega-successful and popular tequila brand, Don Julio Tequila.

His Namesake Tequila Transformed The Industry

To celebrate Don Julios 45th year as a tequilero, his family threw a special party to honor him. At this legendary affair, González offered guests the tequila he had been aging in his office. It was the best he had, and he wanted to share it with his loved ones. After the party, people whod been there began calling him and asking to buy the tequila theyd tasted. But Don Julio said it wasnt for sale. Eventually, though, he relented, and decided he would make this tequila for sale after all, thereby introducing what would become one of the first true, luxury tequilas. It transformed the industry, creating an entirely new category of tequila.

Is Don Julio 1942 Discontinued

The new Don Julio 1942 features a hint more vanilla in the scent, as well as a hint more caramelized baked agave in the flavor. We were taken completely by surprise, and we needed to enlist the help of others.

Its Aejo Is More Tequila And Less Barrel And Thats Weird

DON JULIO REPOSADO TEQUILA

Most reposado and añejo tequilas do their aging in repurposed barrels, absorbing a bit of added character from the wood. Don Julio follows suit: Its reposado spends eight months in old Kentucky bourbon barrels. But it goes a bit off-trend yet again with its añejo, which ages for 18 months in reposado barrels . The result is gentler impact from the wood itself, with more of the agave character left to shine through, making it an anomaly among aged tequilas.

The Bottle Design Was Intentionally Off

In Don Julios time, tequila bottles were purely utilitarian, long, lean, and generally tucked under the table until someones drink needed topping off. They certainly werent a point of visual interest . Don Julio dared to go off trend, designing tequila bottles that werent just short but almost awkwardly squat. The goal was to create not just a visually distinctive bottle, but one you could keep on the table without blocking anyones view of your beautiful, drunken face.

Diageo Launches Real Tequila Tres Comas Based On Silicon Valley Joke

Theres a perfect drink for your Silicon Valley finale party.

Diageo, the spirits conglomerate that owns Don Julio and Casamigos, founded by George Clooney and Rande Gerber, launched a tequila from another celebrity: fictional billionaire Russ Hanneman on the HBO comedy.

In last weeks episode, Hanneman showed the Pied Piper crew a Max Max-style trailer for Russfest, a Burning Man-slash-Frye-Festival-esq festival on a plot of land so far out Nevada barely wants it.

When the show cuts from the commercial back to the guys watching, Richard Hendricks is cradling a bottle of Tres Comas tequila, the name a nod to the three commas club, a club Hanneman has been obsessed with belonging to it stands for the three commas needed to separate all the zeros in $1 billion.

The news release from Diageo was written as if Hanneman were a real person who has created the only acceptable tequila for billionaires.

Without risk, there can be no reward. Without reward, there can be no billionaires. There is only one tequila created for the very rich, and those on the cusp of greatness. A tequila that was imagined by a visionary and raised by boldness. Tres Comas. Finally, a tequila crafted just for those mavericks ready to crush their third comma, the release said.

It all sort of begs the question is the tequila real?

The limited-edition release is on shelves now, and can be yours for $44.99.

The Man Who Devoted His Life To Tequila

If youre a fan of tequila, you are undoubtedly familiar with the name Don Julio. His name is one that is synonymous with high-end agave spirits liquids of uncompromising quality. Surprisingly, though, even some of the most ardent connoisseurs of the category are unaware that this brand represents not merely a myth or a legend but an actual man. His journey is as compelling as the tequila that now bears his name.

When Don Julio González-Frausto Estrada began his tequila-making journey in 1942, he was a passionate and dedicated farmer in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. Even though he was just starting out, González quickly cultivated a reputation among his peers. Friends and neighbors often said he cared for the agave the way one would their own children, and he owned up to that reputation with great pride. The fastidious stewardship served him well as he moved from field to stillhouse.

Back then tequila wasnt the lauded sipping spirit it is today. Considered an often unrefined liquor of the working class, it barely made it beyond the community where it was birthed. Don Julio González was determined to lift the spirits stature, one small batch at a time. It was a Herculean task that involved a precious reserve of perfectly matured maguey along with a hearty dose of perseverance. The world-class bottlings we enjoy today were honed through decades of devotion to craft.

The life of Don Julio Gonzalez is filled with as many twists and turns as a night out while drinking tequila. Born in 1925, Gonzalez started in the tequila biz the year he entered double digits when he was hired to work at his uncle’s tequila distillery in Jalisco, Mexico, according to Thrillist. Ambitious to say the least, he grabbed hold of this opportunity and began soaking in all the knowledge about the production of tequila that he possibly could.

Tragedy struck when he was 15 and faced with the daunting challenge of becoming his family’s sole breadwinner when his father died. With a mother and seven siblings to look after, he struggled to make ends meet, earning a pittance of only 9 pesos a week as a farmhand. In order to up his earnings, the teenage Gonzalez then took a grueling job distributing tequila all across Mexico on horseback, according to the Master of Malt. Armed with two 25-liter barrels of the good stuff, he was then making nearly 10 pesos a day, far outstripping his previous earnings.

Why Is Don Julio 1942 So Special

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of Don Julios original distillery, La Primavera, in 1942, the brand new liqueur, Don Julio 1942, was produced. If you enjoy this flavor profile, it may be a superb tequila for special occasions, but at this price, it wont be your go-to anejo for everyday drinking.

When Did Don Julio 1942 Come Out

Don Julio 1942 was created in 2002 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Don Julio Gonzalezs founding of the company. Region: Jalisco | ABV: 40% | Tasting Notes: Cocoa powder, Dates, Caramel

Añejos and extra añejos should embody the flavor of the wood with the soul of the original spirit, says Hurley, so that the cooked agave flavor shines, complemented by notes of toasted oak, caramel, vanilla and cocoa powder.

This bottle from Patrón exemplifies the style. It is far too tasty, says Chasse. In part, thats due to the barrel program. A combination of used American and new French oak casks gives it a deep amber color that looks great in a snifter. Plus, a velvety mouthfeel and a drying and nearly tannic finale compels you to take another sip. But the pièce de résistance is the old Bordeaux barrels the spirit is finished in they lend a touch of the raisinated flavor youd expect from a wine.

It also does pair nicely with food, says Chasse, and if youre having a fancy day, with a fine cigar.

Region: Jalisco | ABV: 46% | Tasting Notes: Olives, Earth, Orange

If you want to know what tequila tasted like 100 years ago, Fortaleza is your go-to, says Hurley. At his estate in the town of Tequila, master distiller Guillermo Sauza makes the spirit the way his great-great-grandfather made it, using an old stone tahona and brick ovens. Bottled straight from the copper pot still without dilution, this blanco has an alluring earthy, olivey quality, says Chasse, with plenty of bright citrus, too.

    The Story Of Don Julio

Don Julio Ultima Reserva Tequila Review | Don Julio Tequila (1,000 Ultima Reserva Extra Anejo!!)

You see Don Julios short, stumpy bottles? When 17-year-old Julio Gonzalez-Frausto Estrada started producing his own tequila, he was frustrated that he couldnt see his friends over the tall, sleek bottles that the spirit was usually served in. So, as well as pushing his own fashion statement, Don Julio defiantly bottled his tequila in a way that would suit him. Considered uncool at the time, he probably didnt anticipate the entire industry meekly following along in a matter of decades.

Who Is The Founder Of Jose Cuervo

Don Jose Antonio de Cuervo was granted permission by the king of Spain to cultivate and harvest blue agaves in Mexicos Jalisco region in 1758. As early as 1754, his family founded the Taberno de Cuervo and began using the blue agave plant, which has a high water retention capacity, for distillation.

He Understood That Fortune Favors The Bold

As if his response to the wealthy businessman in Atotonilco were not confident enough, Julio immediately doubled down on it. As the story goes, when the rich man said, Youre just a young man. How do you think youre going to pay me back? Julio replied that though he now stood before the man in huaraches , I will return the money to you wearing boots. The entire self-help book industry is based on teaching this kind of entrepreneurial self-confidence, and apparently, González was just born with it.

Recently, the company released its latest Tequila expression: Ultima Reserva. The Tequila is crafted from the last crop of agave planted by Don Julio and his family and was finished in Madeira casks using a Solera-like maturation process. This is the first time that Don Julio has finished a Tequila in a sweet wine cask.

Recently I sat down with Karina Sánchez Huitrón, the newly appointed Global Brand Ambassador for Tequila Don Julio and an old friend, to talk about Ultima Reserva and the future plans of Don Julio.

JM: The Tequila Don Julio Ultima Reserva is meant to commemorate the tenure of Don Julio Gonzalezs at the distillery over his lifetime. How is Ultima Reserva different from the other expressions in the Don Julio range? How was it special for you?
