You can’t really pin Japanese whisky down to a specific style, but it’s generally Scotchy.

What Makes Whiskey Bourbon
This one’s a doozy, but bear with us. For a whiskey to be considered bourbon, the mixture of grains from which the product is distilled must be, at least, 51% corn, rye, wheat, malted barley, or malted rye grain. On top of that, the mixture must be stored in charred oak containers and cannot contain any additives. That law pretty much separates bourbon from everything else.

What Makes It Bourbon
U.S. laws regulate what manufacturers can label as bourbon.
- The mash used must contain at least 51% corn.
- The only additive allowed outside of the mash and the yeast is water. No other additives may be used.
- It must be 160 proof or less.
- It can only be produced in the United States.
- It must be aged for at least two years.
- Aging takes place in new white oak barrels that have been charred.
- While the main grain in bourbon is corn, other grains may include rye, barley, or malt.
- Enjoy it in a classic mint julep.
How Bourbon Carved Out An Identity
Across the Atlantic, Prohibition ended in 1933 and the popularity of Bourbon Whiskey as a Made in America brand began to skyrocket. This process culminated in 1964 when the US Congress declared bourbon to be a distinctive product of the United States and asked for the ban on imports of foreign liquors under the label of Bourbon.
While the Americanized version of Bourbon is a relatively recent phenomenon, now protected by US law, the methods of distilling grain alcohol and ageing it in casks has been prevalent in Europe for at least three to five centuries. The local communities that pushed outwards from the Eastern colonies and settled in Appalachia consisted of Scots, Irish, Scots-Irish and English folks, among others, who brought the tradition of grain alcohol making with them from their roots in the mother country. They used local ingredients and corn happened to be plentiful.
So, bourbon was really just a name given to local whisky in Kentucky, the name first appeared around 1850 and Kentucky Whiskey became a brand some 20 years later. While Elijah Craig or Jacob Spears are sometimes credited with the discovery of Bourbon, most historians do not buy this. There have been a few explanations given, mostly to do with the commercial routes through which the product was traded.

If you like peated whisky, this is one of the best out there for sure, says Kurpinsky. Ardbeg is something of an Islay cult favorite, particularly appealing to true lovers of smoky whisky. The flavor of this Scotch comes from burning peat to dry out the barley and stop the malting process, which infuses the grain with smoke. This bottling, named after a local loch, has all the maritime salinity you come to expect from the distillery literally on the water, but also has one of the most satisfying finishes in Islay, adds Kurpinsky. You’ll get plenty of smoke, dried fruits, fresh coffee, dark sugars and that bit of sea salt.”

McCoy is a big fan of Lagavulin, an Islay distillery that produces some nicely peated scotch. The 16-year-old expression, aged in second-fill ex-bourbon barrels, might be a little pricey, but its well worth the splurge. one of my all-time favorites from Islay, says McCoy. Big peat smoke, spice, sherry and notes of soft wood and black teadelicious all by itself while you’re unwinding next to the fire.
The Verdict: Which Is Better
From the discussions above, it should be clear why Single Malt Scotches are often regarded as sipping whiskies the differences in flavour and mouthfeel let them be enjoyed neat, on a little ice or with a few drops of water mixed in. Some cheaper varieties of alcohol, including Bourbon, may be pounded neat, but its far more common to see them being smothered in ice, soda, colas or water, or being used as the base for mixed drinks such as whiskey sours.
To a purist, the taste meter probably tilts towards high-end Scotch whisky. To someone who is used to the taste and sweet flavours of their favourite Bourbon, the smokiness often found in Scotch may be a turn-off.

Oh boy, what a complicated question!
Just like wines, Scotch flavors are largely dependent on location. Some areas are extra peated while others are soft and sweet and still others are full-bodied smoke .
When tasting from a distillery, keep in mind where in Scotland the distillery operates. There are five distinct areas of Scotland that can be grouped according to general taste.
Glenfiddich Single Malt Scotch Whisky
One of the oldest and most renowned distributors of single malt Scotch Whisky is the Glenfiddich Distillery. Established in 1886, Glenfiddich started out as a small distillery that relied on second-hand equipment for production. Founder William Grant ran a small family run business, which faced fierce competition from larger companies. This competition intensified after World War II, when tastes turned towards the less sophisticated whiskey blends.
The Grant family persisted however, and made the decision in 1963 to market its product outside of Scotland as a strict single malt. While some considered this foolish, the move turned out to be a wise one. Today, Glenfiddich is the largest producer of single malt whiskey in the world, and one of only a handful of distillers that is still being run by a family operation.
Most single malt connoisseurs will admit that it was image that first drew them to the spirit, and taste that kept them there. There is no denying that single malts have a distinct robust flavor that is meant to be savored, not downed and chased. For some this is an acquired taste, building slowly by drinking only high quality single malts with nothing more than a splash of water.

Which Scotch Whiskey Is The Best
Single malt Scotch whiskey is the most popular one these days. This is a whiskey that is made by one single distillery that uses only malted barley. There are no other cereals in this whiskey, and it has to be produced and bottled in Scotland.
Another type of Scotch whiskey is single grain, which is not as common in the rest of the world. The production starts only with malted barley, but then whole grains or cereals are added. This is usually the Scotch that is used in blended whiskey as well.
The next type of Scotch is a blended whiskey, which is made from at least one or more single malt whiskey blended with a single grain whiskey.
Blended Scotch whiskey constitutes about 90% of all Scotch produced in Scotland. You may be familiar with some brands, such as Johnnie Walker and Chivas Regal.
One type of Scotch whiskey that is far less common across the world is blended malt Scotch. It was called a vatted malt or pure malt, and it is made using two or more malt Scotch whiskeys from different distilleries. This whiskey should not contain any grain whiskey at all.
A final type of Scotch whiskey is double malt Scotch. However, this Scotch is no different except that it was aged in two or more types of casks. This whiskey remains in the single malt category, but it is often called double or triple malt instead.
As with Irish whiskey, choosing the best Scotch whiskey depends mostly on taste and cost. For most, single malt Scotch is the purest, but it is also often the priciest.
What Does Blended Scotch Taste Like
The taste of Blended Scotch is harder to generalize. This is because its not based on any one region or any one distillery. The combination of different distilleries obviously takes away that location consistency. And since blended scotches can even combine grains, you have an even wider range of options beyond malt!
Most blended whiskies are made to focus on a few flavor notes that combine well. Generally, they are smooth with many complex notes and full-flavor profiles.
The downside of a blend is some of the funkier notes in specific single malts get cut out in a blend in an effort to create a smooth, balanced bottle. But the flip side is by playing around with quantities, blenders can achieve really unique and complex flavor combinations!
Blended gets a bad reputation, since many younger versions tend to mix something good with lots of low quality whisky. But the older you go, the more likely you are to find really excellent bottles.
The only advice I can really give you here is to go out and try a few. Some of them give you an obvious clue on the bottle. Others youll just have to give a shot.
