But, vodka with pink lemonade? You better believe it. Retired NHL Defenseman Ryan Whitney admitted to enjoying the combination on the popular Barstool Sports podcast, Spittin Chiclets. He explained that he routinely mixed E& J Gallo New Amsterdam Vodka with Pink Lemonade, which spurred a social media phenomenon that led to the creation of one of the most popular flavored vodkas on the market.
Before dabbling in mixology, Ryan D. Whitney started a professional hockey career when the Pittsburgh Penguins selected him in the 2002 NHL Draft. After three years in the minor leagues, he debuted with the Penguins and went on to help the team reach the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals. He also played for the Anaheim Ducks, Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers. Whitney also won a silver medal as a member of Team USA at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
These days, Whitney spends his time as an NHL Network analyst, a frequent guest on ESPNs Pardon My Take, and on the previously mentioned Barstool SportsSpittin Chiclets podcast. When Whitney told the world about his simple mixology on the podcast, it gave birth to a popular #PinkWhitney social-media hashtag. New Amsterdam promptly turned that trend into a bottled, 70-proof flavored vodka.
We thought it would be fun to introduce it as a limited, one-time offer. We started with 70,000 cases, and it sold out in one month, says Britt West, general manager E & J Gallo.

Pink Whitney was born when New Amsterdam became the presenting sponsor of Barstool Sports wildly popular hockey podcast, Spittin Chiclets, in October of 2018.
That first show, we talked about our favourite vodka drinks, said the beverages namesake, former NHL defenseman turned Spittin Chiclets co-host Ryan Whitney, 36. Ive always loved pink lemonade when I was young, with no vodka in there, so naturally it was the perfect mixed drink for me.
Then, just sharing it, thinking people would kind of make fun of me for a pink drink being my favorite, I said, Listen, dont knock it till you try it.
Fans of the podcast did just that, immediately tweeting out a wave of pictures of themselves sampling Whitneys signature drink. Chiclets co-host Paul BizNasty Bissonnette, a former NHL forward, quickly recognized the potential marketing opportunity.
My partner Biz hes very hard to describe, said Whitney. Hes nuts, basically, so hes always throwing ideas at me. A lot of them are very smart, great ideas, but some of them Biz, stop talking to me. Enough.

What You Need To Make Our Watermelon Pink Lemonade Vodka Cocktail:
Lemonade. For this cocktail, I used a pink lemonade mix, but feel free to use a pre-made pink lemonade, either works just fine.
Coconut Syrup. Adding coconut syrup to this cocktail recipe does things to your taste buds, and if you want to take it to the next level, use a coconut liqueur instead of the coconut syrup.
Vodka. Everyone knows that premium vodka makes for better cocktails. However, use your favorite vodka no matter the price point.
Watermelon Pucker. Adding a little kick is what watermelon pucker does to this whimsical cocktail. And if you add a little more than the recipe calls for, well, I aint seen nothing!
Citrus. Adding slices of lemon and lime gives this cocktail a tropical vibe that works well and helps this cocktail look as good as it tastes.
Watermelon. Nothing signals summertime like fresh slices of sweet and juicy watermelon, and this cocktail benefits substantially from its use of watermelon.

A few months after Bissonnette joined Spittin Chiclets, the podcast picked up a new presenting sponsor: New Amsterdam Vodka, which is owned by California-based winery and distiller E& J Gallo.
The tie-up was struck in October 2018 as part of New Amsterdams larger partnership with the NHL .
Why vodka?
Well, its Americas largest spirits category with 80m+ 9-liter cases sold in 2020.
New Amsterdam successfully entered the vodka market in 2011 but Pink Whitney offered a particularly juicy opportunity to capitalize on 3 industry trends: 1) domestically produced alcohol 2) lower price points 3) flavored drinks.
The ad read that started it all
As part of the first Spittin Chiclets sponsorship ad read , New Amsterdam provided a simple prompt for the crew: How do you drink your vodka?
Here was Whitneys answer :
I drink pink lemonade with New Amsterdam vodka. And anyone else who has any brains, and any balls and any sort of confidence in life will understand Pink Lemonade New Amsterdam Vodka, come at me one time.
which mixes vodka with Canadian Dry Ginger Ale and orange juice RA likes it on the rocks).
Whitney made his recommendation fully expecting the public to skewer him.
Instead, the social media response was hugely positive with fans posting their own pink lemonade and vodka concoctions on social media. Hilariously, #PinkWhitney started to trend.

This strawberry lemonade vodka drink calls for Pink Lemonade Italian Soda which is a light and bubbly mixer. Italian Soda is simply carbonated water infused with flavored syrup.
Back in the 1920s Italian Soda was created in the United States in an Italian-American community of San Fransisco. The syrup came from Italy and was paired with carbonated water, becoming known as Italian Soda.
Its readily available at most grocery stores or liquor stores. If you cant find it, you can substitute it with Pink Lemonade Seltzer Water, which is essentially the same thing.
