Geneva Rabbi Itzhak Dayan bemoaned the damage done by Vaad Hakashrus Belz USA who questioned the kashrus of the popular Grey Goose vodka which he certifies. Star-K has kept it on the approved list. Full Story

Rabbi Itzhak Dayan, Rabbi of the Jewish community of Geneva in Switzerland, has bemoaned recent statements that questioned the kosher status of the Grey Goose vodka which he says he has been certifying.

I hereby come to clarify unequivocally in an unambiguous way that all the alcohol that is brought to the Grey Goose factory is produced from wheat which grows in the Picardie region in France , Rabbi Dayan wrote in a letter to the Chief Rabbinate of Israel.

Rabbi Dayan said that damage was done following a 29th of Kislev 5782 notice of Rabbi Asher Eckstein, Chairman of Vaad Hakashrus Belz USA, which said Grey Goose contains grape alcohol in their unflavored beverage. Rabbi Eckstein has since backtracked his letter.

It is a pity that they didnt call me , Rabbi Dayan wrote in the letter dated Tuesday, 3 Teves 5782 December 7, 2021. He asked that the kosher division of Israels Rabbinate put out a notice that Grey Goose is indeed allowed.

The Fruit Flavors Come From Actual Fruit

Grey Goose VX Vodka Exceptionnelle 750ml

Grey Goose, like most major commercial vodka producers, has brand extensions beyond their classic formula, namely four fruit varieties: orange, pear, lemon, and black cherry. In this case, the fruit flavors infused into the basic vodka actually come from fruit The lemons come from Menton, in the south the pears hail from the Loire Valley and the black cherries are sourced from the village of Itzassou in French Basque country.

The whole fruits are delivered to a parfumerie in Grasse , where the flavors and aromas are extracted and shipped back to Grey Goose in Cognac as essential oils that are then blended with the classic formula.

How Is Vodka Made From Potatoes

When youre at a party and people are discussing how different types of alcohol are made, its pretty likely that someone will ask how is vodka distilled?

Inevitably, some know-it-all will jump in to say that its made from potatoes, and thats your cue to set the record straight. Vodka can be made from potatoes, and there are a small percentage of companies that still do it this way. But, most of it is made from some other starchy or sugary plant, such as grain, corn, or wheat.

A lot of this mix up comes from where the vodka is made. Some regions dont have potatoes, but those thirsty people still want to distill something for a cocktail

So when the follow-up question of what alcohol is made from potatoes? comes up, you can save that know-it-alls ego a bit by saying very few, but some vodka brands.

Differences Between The Vodkas

No, Grey Goose Vodka does not produce nor privately label Kirkland vodka, Joe McCanta, Grey Gooses Global Head of Education, told USA TODAY. This is a viral claim that has circled Grey Goose for many years and its completely false.

Costco had no comment.

The certificates issued for Grey Gooses various American products all state the products originate in France, confirming Grey Goose statements to USA TODAY.

From harvest to milling to distillation to bottling, every step is done in France. Only Grey Goose uses single origin Picardy wheat and water from our natural limestone well in Gensac-la-Pallue to craft a gluten free spirit of exceptional character, McCanta told USA TODAY.

Grey Goose told USA TODAY its vodka is distilled only once in an effort to preserve the quality natural ingredients and profiles of its ingredients. Kirkland Signature French Vodka states on its bottle that it is distilled five times.

Is Grey Goose Vodka Keto Friendly

No, Grey Goose vodka is not keto friendly. While vodka is typically low in carbohydrates, it is still relatively high in calories and contains no nutritional value. According to the USDA, a 1. 5-ounce serving of 80-proof vodka contains 97 calories and zero carbohydrates.

While this may sound like a low-calorie and low-carb beverage, 97 calories can quickly add up in a diet that is severely limiting both carbs and calories. Additionally, if you are mixing vodka with other high-calorie beverages like sodas, juices, and flavored mixers, the calorie count will increase.

Since the ketogenic diet is a very low-carb, high-fat and adequate protein diet, it would not be recommended to drink Grey Goose vodka while trying to stay in ketosis.

What Are The Ingredients In Grey Goose Vodka

How Is Vodka Made? | Vodka 101 | Grey Goose Vodka

Like all traditional vodkas, Grey Goose has only two ingredients. First is the ethyl alcohol derived from fermented winter wheat. The second is spring water from Gensac-La-Pallue.

Grey Goose also has flavored vodkas developed by Cellar Master François Thibault. They are La Poire and Le Citron .

La Poire is made from the traditional Grey Goose Vodka recipe and infused with fresh Anjou pears, which are also cultivated in France.

Similarly, Le Citron is made from Grey Goose Vodka and Menton lemons. Due to the thick skin of Menton lemons, they generate more essential oils which contribute to flavor.

Grey Goose also has other flavored vodkas, namely Strawberry & Lemongrass, White Peace & Rosemary, LOrange, and Watermelon & Basil.

While Grey Goose does not disclose the ingredients used for each of these flavored vodkas, they do claim on their website that the ingredients they used are all-natural.

It’s Milled & Distilled By Fewer Than 20 Employees

The entire world’s supply of Grey Goose comes through the mill and distillery in La Vallee de l’Oise, a facility manned, when I visited, by all of 17 people. It’s a small, focused operation: the wheat grain comes in via truck and is weighed and analyzed for starch content, then milled into a fine wheat flour. The flour then undergoes “saccharification,” where the starch is converted into the glucose that will fuel the yeast during fermentation. From here, the resulting “wheat mash” enters a cascade fermentation process. It churns through six tanks as yeast converts sugar into alcohol, leaving a “wine” of 10% ABV that will then be distilled into a 96% ABV spirit via a massive column still.

Vive La Vodka: The Unmistakable Frenchness Of Grey Goose

In the heart of Picardy, cellar master François Thibault tastes every batch of the spirit he created to ensure the aromas and flavours reflect the quality of the ingredients he uses

Stretching from the Parisian suburbs to the vineyards of Champagne, Picardy is a flat, low region dotted with medieval churches and pastel-hued resort towns. The oceanic climate mild, wet and windy ensures perfect wheat without irrigation. Sown in autumn, this soft winter wheat matures over nine months. It retains consistent quality year after year, earning Picardy the nickname the breadbasket of France. Some of this wheat, however, is destined to be fermented not baked.

If this wheat is good enough for French bread, then it is good enough for Grey Goose, says François Thibault, the man who drew on his 25 years of wine and cognac-making expertise, knowledge of French culinary values such as quality and provenance, and a touch of inspiration, to create Grey Goose French Vodka. From simplicity and quality, he says sagely, comes incredible complexity.

Grey Goose uses just two ingredients: spring water from Grey Gooses own well in Gensac-la-Pallue, Cognac and soft winter wheat from Picardy. Even in the potato-rich countries of eastern Europe, wheat is the number one ingredient in its vodka making wheat provenance of crucial importance. French wheat is renowned for its quality and the best wheat in France is grown in Picardy.

Ketel One is the better vodka after considering the price and flavor profile of the spirit. It is also a flexible cocktail mixer because of its smoothness and underlying citrusy notes. It has a rich history starting in 1691, and the making process of this vodka resembles the processing of gin.

Grey Goose is also an excellent vodka and a good choice as it offers more flavored varieties, although you have to spend a little more. Nevertheless, they both have an incredibly smooth and crisp texture that mixing them with lemon juice and ice already creates a refreshing cocktail.
