While it was out of fashion for a while, recently more and more people have once again turned to the classic gin & tonic cocktail. This is no short-lived fad though, this drink is actually older than any of your grandmas and has, in fact, been around for more than 200 years.
It all started in the 17th Century when indigenous people in Peru treated malaria using Cinchona tree bark. The Jesuits spread the medical discoveries throughout Europe, but the British disliked the strong bitter taste. With a little help of carbonated water and sugar, the problem was solved.
Soon after British soldiers began adding the chinin-heavy tonic water to gin over ice in an attempt to keep malaria symptoms away. The drink became so iconic in British History that Winston S. Churchill was quoted saying:
Gin and tonic has saved more Englishmens lives, and minds, than all the doctors in the empire.

Use Plenty Of Quality Ice
Whenever youre making a highball, you want to use a LOT of ice. Yes, fill the glass with ice. Contrary to popular belief, more ice will actually mean that your drink is less watered down, rather than more. It will also be colder quicker and stay colder longer.

Lonewolf Cloudy Lemon Gin
We were lucky enough to visit the Brewdog Brewery last year and were surprised just how much effort it was putting into its spirits range. So much, we just had to get a bottle of their gin in to taste. In the end we got two: its dry gin and this cloudy lemon variant. If the sun ever comes out again, then this is the gin to go for. It’s a creamy gin, rather than being acidic and goes really well with a plain tonic. The lemon blast is natural, not chemical, and we can’t get enough.
It took us a while to get round to tasting Tobermory Gin as it came to us with an adult colouring book. Once we put the pencils down, though, this is a great-tasting gin from the Isle of Mull. The Hebridean gin is distilled with botanicals including juniper, tea, heather, elderflower, sweet orange peel and uses a splash of spirit from its whisky distillery. This makes for a G& T with something of a kick, packed with earthy notes. We had it with ginger ale, too, and that was a lovely pairing
We first heard about Colonsay Cait Sith on World Gin Day. Since then we have been sent a bottle and it is deserving to be in this list. It’s a Scottish gin that’s Old Tom style , so it’s less about the botanics and more about the orange, pink grapefruit and vanilla taste. It’s a really refreshing gin that we had with tonic and lots of ice. It also has one of the nicest bottles we have seen, so if you are all about the shelf appeal, then this is the gin for you.

When it comes to tonic water, the choices used to be very limited. For many years, the market was dominated by 2 or 3 major brands and that was it. Nowadays, there are numerous options with more options coming every day. There are even tonic syrups you can use, along with club soda, allowing you to add as little or as much tonic flavor as youd like.
No matter what brand or style of tonic water you purchase, we prefer to use small bottles over the large ones. Warner’s London Dry Gin
Warner’s London Dry Gin is made on a farm in Harrington, using home-grown ingredients and it shows. The fragrance and freshness of this gin is something else, rich with juniper and spice but with a mellowness thanks to vanilla. It’s best served without garnish but with Indian tonic and ice. At a recent taste test we tried it just like that and neat, and it really is a lovely, refreshing drink.
This new bottle from the Isle of Wight distillery is an absolute joy to drink. It is packed with citrus fruits and uses a number of coastal botanicals which includes rock samphire and rosemary. Juniper is in the background for this drink, with a punch of grapefruit front and centre. Lovely stuff
It’s really refreshing when a coastal gin represents the sea in its taste and this is exactly what we have with Bullards Coastal Gin. There’s a slight saltiness to the smell which is mixed nicely with woody juniper and fennel notes. All of this makes for a well rounded gin that works well with some dark fruits to cut through. The sample we received also came with a re-fill in eco-friendly packaging that can be sent back to the distiller for recycling which is a really nice touch.
Beefeater London Dry Gin
Almost as bold as it gets on the juniper scale, Beefeater is worthy of its reputation as the quintessential London Dry gin. The pronounced peppery berry notes offer the ideal match for bittersweet tonic water, while a spray of citrus on the finish refreshes the palate. Average price: $20.

Start With Quality Ingredients
There are plenty of opinions about what makes the gin and tonic perfect, but I think everyone will agree that you need to begin with a quality gin and a quality tonic water .
Like any cocktail, it will only be as good as the sum of its parts, and poor quality ingredients can ruin the entire experience. This doesnt mean that you need to spend a lot of money, but dont use bottom shelf gin or store brand tonic water. Tip: if your gin or your tonic water are packaged in plastic, chances are theyre not the best choices.

Ratio Of Gin To Tonic
My preferred ratio is 1:3, or 2 ounces of gin to 5-6 ounces of tonic water. Brands like Fever-Tree typically come in 6 oz bottles and I find this to be the perfect amount. Some prefer a bit less tonic water with a ratio of 1:2. This makes for a stronger cocktail and its a bit less balanced in my opinion.
Tonic Water Vs Tonic Syrup
Now that youve got your quality gin, its time to pick a quality tonic water or syrup.
Although the soda aisle in the local grocery store has plenty of tonic water made by big soda companies, these tend to be overly sweet, have an artificial taste, or a combination of the two.
In fact, I hated Gin and Tonics as a twenty-something until I was finally introduced to the high end tonic waters from Fever-Tree and Q Mixers. In addition to these well known craft brands, other high quality tonic waters are made by Fentimans, Regatta, and others.
Tonic syrup is a concentrate that you can mix with carbonated water to make your own tonic water. Tonic syrups can be much more economical because a small bottle of relatively inexpensive syrup can make many glasses of tonic. Also, using a syrup allows you to decide how strong or weak your tonic tastes.
There are a number of tonic syrups available in stores or on Amazon, and you can even make your own pretty easily with cinchona bark! Try the tonic syrups from Liber & Co, Jack Rudy Cocktail Co, or the craft syrups from Free Pour Jennys.

Plymouth Gin: Best For A Martini
Unlike London Dry Gin, which can be found in plenty of variations across the planet, theres only one brand that sells Plymouth Gin. Its aptly called the same name. Plymouth Gin differs from London Dry Gin in that its slightly less dry likely due to the higher concentration of root ingredients. It has a slightly earthier flavour and comes in two core strengths standard and Navy Strength.
Plymouth is a classic brand and is distilled at the historic Black Friars Distillery the oldest working distillery in England. Its been produced here since 1793, using a combination of seven botanicals and soft Dartmoor water. Little has changed in the production method since then.
