The Gin and Tonic is a quintessential summer cocktail. At its simplest, this classic drink requires just two components. But choose high quality ingredients and finish with some thoughtful garnishing and you can make this simple gin cocktail truly extraordinary. Often regarded as just a warm weather drink, with a few tweaks, this refreshing G& T transitions easily to fall and winter happy hours.

Plymouth London Dry Gin

Still made in its original artisanal method and with its traditional recipe, Plymouth London Dry Gin is made in a single copper pot. And, amazingly, its the same pot that was installed at the distillery in 1855. So, every sip you have of Plymouth gin is a sip of history and the taste our ancestors loved so much.

Its traditional production processes help create a complex flavor profile as well as a delicately smooth texture. This is what many believe gives Plymouth gin the title of the single malt of gins. Its mixture of slightly sweet botanicals and fresh Dartmoor water has helped make this quality gin one of the go-to choices of gin connoisseurs and bartenders around the world. With such a rich history, Plymouth gin goes down well with all manners of cocktails but the number one still remains the humble G& T.

How To Build The Cocktail

  • Select your glassware, considering size and shape
  • Fill the glass with plenty of quality ice
  • Pour 1.5 to 2 ounces of a high quality gin over the ice.
  • Add a squeeze of fresh lime or lemon juice, and stir to chill.
  • Top with 4-6 ounces of ice-cold, premium tonic water.
  • Garnish to accent the botanicals in your gin
  • Enjoy!

In which an array of nine tonic waters are put through their paces in an attempt to find, once and for all, the tonic to rule them all

This post is part two in a three-post series devoted to the gin and tonic. Part 1 endeavoured to find the best gin. Now, in part 2, the mission is to find the best tonic for gin and tonic

Some time ago, we had the gigantic joust of the gins. Now, at long last, its time for the titanic tiff of the tonics.

Oh, fuck, how much of a wanker does that pair of alliterations make me sound? DONT ANSWER.

Todays mission, then, is to find out which tonic makes the best gin and tonic. The deal here was pretty much the same as with the gins: taste em blind in one joyously ginny lineup. The gin used was my favourite common brand, Tanqueray.

And I make no apologies for the fact that the lineup includes no slimline tonic varieties whatsoever. Because slimline tonic is the corrosive piss of satan.

Anyhow, here from worst to best are the results

    Spirit Works: Best Sloe Gin

Spirit Works doesnt just distil gin it offers a whole portfolio of spirits including vodka, whisky, barrel gin and sloe gin. While some might assume that this works to its disadvantage when it comes to honing the fine details of spirit crafting, its not a problem that Spirit Works has suffered from.

It might actually work to its advantage. Because while the brand is known for producing good quality vodka and gin, its Spirit Works sloe gin that really shines through.

As it falls under a 40% ABV, Sloe gin cant technically be called proper gin. But its popularity and variety make it an important part of any thorough gin guide anyway. And if youre looking for a bottle to enjoy, Spirit Works offering is the way to go.

The bottle begins its life as the distillerys dry gin, made with juniper, orris and angelica roots, cardamom, coriander, orange and lemon peels and hibiscus. Then its infused with sloe berries to bring in that signature flavour. Its sweet but not cloying with lively fruit and citrus notes.

    Hendricks Gin And Tonic

    • G& T Style: Unusual
    • With Light Tonic: 8/10
    • With Regular Tonic: 8/10

Youll notice a huge gap in ratings between positions 7-10 and 6. Everything from here onwards is basically very good.

A strong performer with both tonic varieties, Hendricks brings its characteristic herbaceous qualities to bear. Its subtler and more complex than the rest, managing to be light without being insubstantial or glib but instead being rather goddamn delicious. With the Light tonic, theres an interesting hint of root vegetable whereas the expected cucumber comes more to the fore with the Regular tonic. Really rather nice whichever tonic you choose to pair it with, but keep the gin:tonic ratio heavy on the gin to avoid squishing its delicate character, I reckon.

Plymouth Gin: Best For A Martini

Unlike London Dry Gin, which can be found in plenty of variations across the planet, theres only one brand that sells Plymouth Gin. Its aptly called the same name. Plymouth Gin differs from London Dry Gin in that its slightly less dry likely due to the higher concentration of root ingredients. It has a slightly earthier flavour and comes in two core strengths standard and Navy Strength.

Plymouth is a classic brand and is distilled at the historic Black Friars Distillery the oldest working distillery in England. Its been produced here since 1793, using a combination of seven botanicals and soft Dartmoor water. Little has changed in the production method since then.

The rich and smooth taste of Plymouth gin makes it the perfect accompaniment for a Martini. It has won plenty of awards over time for its rich, fresh aroma and elegant, aromatic finish. Plymouth Gin was named in the first recorded Dry Martini recipe in 1904 and, when combined with Dry Vermouth and a garnish, makes for the perfect drink.

    Best American: Dorothy Parker

Region: New York | ABV: 44% | Tasting Notes: Elderberry, Citrus, Juniper

There are so many distilleries making American gin these days, from craft distillers waiting for their whiskey to age, to larger operations intent on creating gin using local botanicals.

This American gin is made in Brooklyn by the New York Distilling Company, which named it after the famed poet and writer. This is a thoroughly modern gin with hints of classicism, made using a botanical blend that includes elderberries, citrus, cinnamon, and hibiscus, along with the requisite juniper.

If the gin was high proof and leaked into the gunpowder, it would still lighthence, the name. Fords introduced its Officers’ Reserve Gin in 2019.

It is an excellently executed London dry gin made with mostly traditional old-school botanicals that is wonderful in its original all-purpose expression, said Smith. But then they decided to tantalize us with a more concentrated version that they rest in sherry barrels for a touch of authentic British Royal Navy flavor.

Nolets Reserve: The Most Expensive Gin

Everything about Nolets Reserve gin is superior. The entire goal of the distillery is to create the very best, from the exclusive high quality, invaluable ingredients, to the tiny production and minuscule allocation.

This modern gin is distilled at a higher ABV than usual, too, at 52.3% compared to a standard of between 40-48%. Despite the number, its an easy-to-drink gin thats smooth and round throughout. Its high price point comes mostly from its use of saffron, which is more expensive per ounce than gold and isnt used sparingly in Nolets distillation process.

The saffron also gives Nolets Reserve its slightly tinted amber colouring and warm, deep spice flavour. Unsurprisingly, its a gin with plenty of depth, balancing bitter notes like verbena with florals like Turkish rose and lavender.

Only a few hundred bottles of Nolets are produced each year, overseen by master distiller Carolus Nolet Sr. Each bottle is also personally numbered and signed by the master distiller before its sold. Its a wonderful, complex gin created to be sipped.

    Sipsmith Gin And Tonic

    • G& T Style: Unusual
    • With Light Tonic: 7/10
    • With Regular Tonic: 10/10

Sipsmith is excellent with Regular tonic and rather good with Light. With Regular, it has a smoothness almost a flatness, though I dont mean that pejoratively. It glides across your palate, delivering a solid, serious, ginny flavour with a minimum of friction, backed up with a fabulous creaminess. With the light tonic, this smoothness is less pronounced instead theres a bit of a herby character and the overall effect is perhaps less cohesive. Still a fine drink, though.
