What Can You Mix With Tequila Drinks
While I’m a tequila sipper and enjoy most of my tequila neat, it’s hard to turn down a refreshing tequila based mixed drink when the hot Miami sun is pounding down. Every once in a while I’m surprised at the creations bartenders have come up with to make craft drinks from tequila and even mezcal. To make tequila cocktails according to your tastes, here are some ideas for easy and delicious beverages that are sure to impress your guests.
More About Tonic Water
Tonic water is a carbonated water that also contains quinine and is lightly sweetened. Its flavor is bubbly, bitter, sweet and sour. Quinine was historically prescribed as a medicine to fight malaria, and mixing it with carbonated water and sugar helped to mask its bitter flavor. It was first sold in the 1850s. Today, the level of quinine is much lower than historical tonic water and is safe to consume.
Whats the best tonic water brand? There are lots out there! Our favorite brand is Q Tonic: it has great flavor and is sold in small cans, just enough for a few drinks.
Or Looking For Tequila And Soda
Were you thinking of mixing tequila and soda instead? Because you can do that too! Soda water is unsweetened carbonated water, and typically used in drinks like this one and the Vodka Soda and Whiskey Soda. But you can also mix tequila and soda! Here are a few options that mix well with tequila:
- Lemon lime soda : Add the same amount of lemon lime soda as the recipe below
- Sparkling lemonade: Add store-bought or homemade sparkling lemonade
- Tonic water: Tonic water is lightly sweetened and mixes well with tequila
- Cola: Try a Tequila and Coke, sometimes called a Batanga

Tequila + Pineapple Juice
Pineapple juice and tequila were made for each other. Together, they harmonize to create a cocktail that is grassy, vegetal, tropical and peppery. While fresh pineapple juice makes the brightest and tartest drink, canned pineapple juice is a viable option . Best of all, literally any tequilabe it a blanco, reposado or añejoworks as the base of this drink. Our favorite bottling to use is Calle 23s blanco tequila, which lends its vibrantly tropical fruit-forward flavors to the juice.
Best Tequila For Tequila And Coke Aka The Batanga
We uncovered the Tequila and Coke in our tour of all the variations on a rum and coke. But turns out, its a popular drink in Mexico, where its called the Batanga! Like a Rum and Coke, its very loose and not considered a high-brow cocktail. But its a legit cocktail in its own right, especially when you use good tequila.
- The best tequila for a tequila and coke? Tequila reposado. Tequila reposado is aged tequila, which is stored from 2 to 12 months. It has a nuanced flavor, with notes of oak and vanilla. It makes Tequila and Coke taste fancier than it should.
- You can also use tequila blanco. Blanco is unaged tequila, and it works too! It has a more straightforward flavor with that signature burn.

Does Tequila Rose Contain Gluten
Tequila Rose. So weve said gluten free alcohol options include all spirits, whiskey, brandy and cider UNLESS theres an allergen warning suggesting otherwise. The only spirit Ive found that has an allergy warning is Tequila Rose Strawberry Cream the label says its contains products of wheat.
Tequila + Agave Syrup
Mix these two ingredients together, and you have a tequila Old Fashioned without the bitters. You just need a mixing glass, bar spoon, tray of nice ice, agave syrup , and a bottle of your favorite tequila, and youre a twist of the wrist away from having yourself a delectable drink. While a blanco tequila will technically work as the base of this cocktail, it is best to use a reposado or añejo that has more depth, flavor and richness.

What’s The Difference Between A Tequila Sunrise And A Tequila Sunset
Quite often, tequila sunset is just another name for a tequila sunrise. Then again, it can be an entirely different recipe. Some use grapefruit juice instead of orange, while others use a blend of pineapple and orange. In all of those, though, the grenadine is at the bottom, just like in a sunrise.
For the opposite effect that places a red layer at the top of the drink , you’ll need to use a lighter ingredient than straight grenadine. One option is to mix a little soda with grenadine before adding it to the tequila mix. Blackberry brandy is commonly used as a substitute for grenadine in a tequila sunset, and most brands should be light enough to float on top. Other red liquors may work as well, depending on their specific gravity. You could even use dark rum mix it with food coloring if you really want the red layer. With all of these tequila sunset options, pour the top layer over the back of a barspoon so it floats.
Types Of Tequila To Use
Whats the best type of tequila to use in tequila and tonic? Youll want to save your top shelf tequila for sipping straight. Any quality of tequila works here: and adding tonic water helps mask lower quality liquor. Heres what to know about buying tequila:
- Rule of thumb: any mid-priced tequila tastes great. Price does indicate quality. Look for 750 ml bottles in the range of $22 to $35.
- Tequila reposado is aged, and has notes of oak and vanilla. Tequila blanco is not aged, so the flavor is more straightforward and has that signature tequila burn.
- Some good brands of tequila? We recommend Espolon Blanco as an inexpensive tequila blanco, El Tesoro Blanco or Patrón Silver as mid-priced tequila blanco, or Milagro Reposado or Suerte Reposado for tequila reposado.

Canada Dry Ginger Ale
Are you a fan of the currently trendy Moscow Mule? Then, youll probably enjoy mixing the tequila on your bar cart with ginger ale as well. This mixer has a bit of spice that plays well with the citrus notes in the average tequila. Try starting with one part tequila and adding two parts ginger ale to your glass. Make it stronger or weaker depending on the quality of the tequila you are using. To create an extra special cocktail, mix in a dash of salt and a wedge of lime.
Eleven Pro Tips And Fun Facts For Pro Tequila Mixers
1. Blue Agave Is Key
A spirit can only be classified as tequila if it is a minimum of 51 percent derived from the blue agave plant, with the remainder consisting of another kind of neutral spirit. Any of your quality brands of tequila typically use 100 percent blue agave in spirits, and any of these brands will flaunt it on their label. A mixto, a term we went over early, is a lower percentage of agave and generally cheaper.
2. Appearance can be deceiving agave isnt a cactus
Despite blue agaves appearance thats prickly and pokey in nature, it is technically not a cactus. It is actually part of the Agavoideae family, making it a succulent more closely related to a lily plant. Fun Fact agave means noble, admirable, and illustrious in Latin.
3. The Blue Agave harvest takes time, love, and care
The blue agave plants, known as agave tequilana weber to the scientific community, take a whopping eight to twelve years to grow to maturity for harvest and be up to seven feet tall. Thats comparable to the time, love, and care to raise a small child that goes into producing your favorite bottle of tequila.
4. Tequila comes from the heart of agave
5. Appellation of origin
6. In Mexico, they typically sip, not shoot tequila
In the United States, it is common practice to drink tequila as a shot with a salted rim and a lime wedge chaser, known in Mexico as tequila cruda. Whereas in Mexico, they typically choose to savor their tequila and sip it neat like a fine whiskey.

If you love the Gin and Tonic, you should try the Tequila and Tonic. Its along the same lines, blending white tequila with some tonic water and fresh lime juice. Its refreshing, tart, and delicious.
This drink has a light, refreshing taste that will be appreciated by those who dont love the surplus of really sweet cocktails out there. It goes with any meal and any occasion.
And even though its got two and a half ounces of tequila, the tonic water balances it out and makes it a nice long drink.
Now, lets talk about lime. Traditionally, you would just squeeze one lime wedge into this drink, drop the spent lime into the drink, and serve it.
But I love lime, so I usually go for two to three wedges of juice. And it also depends on the size of your lime. So I say its to taste. Put in a tiny bit of a lime, or turn the drink into tequila limeade. The choice is yours.
Youll taste the tequila in this drink, so pick a bottle you like. I recommend Altos if you like a mild, smooth tequila, and Casa Noble reposado if you want one with a little more bite.
As for the tonic water, Schweppes is a good choice. Or if you want to make your own tonic instead of using store-bought? Check out this tonic making kit that lets you blend your own without any artificial stuff.
