Best Craft: St George Terroir Gin
Courtesy of Caskers
Region: California | ABV: 45 percent | Tasting Notes: Pine, Sage, Juniper
Californias St. George Spirits has been making excellent craft spirits in different categories for decades now. The trio of gins it produces are truly excellent, with the Terroir expression leading the pack. This offers a taste of California, made with Douglas fir, California bay laurel, coastal sage, and juniper of course, making for a piney and woody spirit. Try this in a Martini to experience what using an altogether different style than London dry can bring to the drink.

What Types Of Gin Mix Well With Ginger Ale
Ginger ale is, to say the least, a drink for the acquired taste. Nowadays, there are many sorts of ginger ale on the market. Some are sweeter and more sugary, while others will be crisp and sharp.
Then, theres also the difference between ginger ale and ginger beer. The difference is actually quite simple. Ginger beer is way sharper, whereas ginger ale is a little smoother and sweeter. Ginger ale is more approachable, where ginger beer is a purer, denser version of it.
In either case, ginger ale will always be dominant in a drink, simply because of the sharpness that the ginger gives it. This is also the reason why I initially called it a drink for the acquired taste.
This sharpness, however, is also what makes ginger ale such a fantastic drink. With its sharp, fresh, and sweet taste, ginger ale makes for a fantastic drink, either on its own or as a mixer.
Ginger ale is quite a strong drink, so not every type of gin will be as great with it. With that being said, what types of gin actually mix well with ginger ale?
Ginger ale can be quite strong and sharp, so if you want to mix it with gin, make sure you use a gin that also has a sharp taste. The gin needs to be able to hold its own against the ginger ale, otherwise, you would not be able to taste it.
Another type of gin that goes well with ginger ale would of course be a ginger-infused gin. The ginger-infused gin will perfectly complement the taste of the ginger ale, making for a great combination.

Potential Health Benefits Of Gin
While some online articles have championed the benefits of drinking gin due to the properties of juniper berries, from which gin is derived, no evidence suggests that juniperâs antioxidants survive the fermentation process. When used as a control in a study on red wine, gin showed no special antioxidant properties.
However, there are several health benefits associated with the light to moderate consumption of any form of alcohol, i.e., about 1 drink a day for women and 1-2 for men. These include:
Heart Disease and Other Conditions
Alcohol has a U or J-curve relationship with certain conditions. While light drinking has a positive impact on them, heavy drinking negatively affects or increases the risk for the following:
- Type 2 Diabetes
However, in order to validate the relationship between moderate drinking and these benefits, more studies that control for other factors are needed. For example, one team of researchers found that, when they controlled for socioeconomic status, the supposed health benefits of light drinking were vastly reduced.
Is Gin Stronger Than Vodka
Vodka is a neutral spirit made from fermentable ingredients such as grain or fruit thats distilled or treated to make a spirit without character, aroma, taste or color. Gin, on the other hand, is a spirit that is 40 percent ABV or higher, with its main characteristic flavor derived from juniper berries.

The Best Juice For Gin
With so many different flavors coming from so many botanicals, gin is an interesting and complex spirit. Theres a profile out there for everyone and it makes for some delicious cocktails, intense sipping experiences, and wonderful mixed drinks. Tonic water is, of course, a classic mixer, but its not the only way to enjoy sipping on some gin!
If youre not a fan of tonic water, or just want to mix things up a little try some juice instead. Fruit juice is sometimes used as an ingredient in cocktails, with gin and other spirits, but mixing gin with just some juice is a bit different. Doing so allows the flavors of the juice and the gin to work together without interference and when you have the right pairing, the resulting flavor can be incredible.
The best juice for gin is usually fruit juice, though savory juices can still work well. Citrus is almost always a good choice and it goes well with just about any dry gin or gin with its own citrus flavors. Softer gin tends to go well with sweeter juices like apple or cranberry and it makes for a wonderfully refreshing drink in the summer.
The best part about the gin and juice combination is that its customizable. Want it sweeter? Add more juice. Want it stronger? Add more gin.
Need An Assist With Digestion
Gin has you covered, once again. The bitters used to create gin boost stomach acid and digestive enzymes in your digestive system. This helps break down that gigantic combo meal you told yourself you wouldnt have anymore. Plus, gins aids against painful heartburn, which is a huge plus after a large meal.
Attention gin lovers: Although gin has its health benefits, its imperative that you seek professional medical advice from your physician before consuming any alcohol-based beverages.

Best For Vodka Drinkers: Dover Strait Gin
Good with soda and citrus
Might be too vodka-like
ABV: 40% | Region: US | Tasting Notes: Lemon peel, Subtle juniperVodka drinkers tend to enjoy a clean, crisp spirit, and that can be challenging to find in gin. For a bottom-shelf option with subtle botanicals, Dover Strait Gin is a good choice. In fact, many experts find it so mild that they compare it to cheap neutral vodka.
Dover Strait is distilled in California from neutral grains. The taste has hints of lemon peel and whispers of juniper, so youd think youre drinking a botanically infused vodka, which is not a far stretch. Rather than drink it straight, top this 80-proof gin with tonic or seltzer and add a lemon or lime wedge to give it a tart boost.
Does Gin Get You Drunk
It does. There is no such thing as a person that can drink gin and not have the alcohol get into their bloodstream. If you drink enough of it, past a certain BAC measurement, then you are considered legally drunk. If you drink any alcoholic beverage, the alcohol will get into your bloodstream, period.

Gin And Juice Cocktails
Theres no doubt that your chosen juice and chosen gin make a wonderful drink on their own. You can play around with ratios and you may very well find your new favorite go-to drink thats quick, easy, and perfect for you. Once youve done that, though, there are many ways you can quickly and easily add to these drinks for a fun and more complex experience.
Try some of these additional ingredients to easily turn your gin and juice into a full-blown cocktail.
Start With Quality Ingredients
There are plenty of opinions about what makes the gin and tonic perfect, but I think everyone will agree that you need to begin with a quality gin and a quality tonic water .
Like any cocktail, it will only be as good as the sum of its parts, and poor quality ingredients can ruin the entire experience. This doesnt mean that you need to spend a lot of money, but dont use bottom shelf gin or store brand tonic water. Tip: if your gin or your tonic water are packaged in plastic, chances are theyre not the best choices.

Best For A Gin And Tonic: Burnett’s London Dry Gin
Courtesy of Drizly
ABV: 40% | Region: US | Tasting Notes: Juniper, Citrus, Floral, Bitter finish
Burnett’s London Dry rivals Gordons in longevity, taste, and thriftiness. Classically styled, it originated in 18th-century London but is now owned by Heaven Hill Distillery and produced in Kentucky. A little lighter than most, it has a nice taste that balances out the pine and citrus flavors, and the florals are surprisingly pleasant. There is some distinct bitterness in the finish, but thats not uncommon in this price range.
This 80-proof gin is carried by many liquor stores and is an excellent budget-friendly option for a gin and tonic. The crispness pairs nicely with any tonic water, so feel free to save a little money there, too. With that duo in stock, just pick up a few limesbecause even budget-conscious drinkers know that fresh fruit is bestand youll be all set for a simple happy hour drink at home.
Is It Safe To Drink Tonic Water Every Day
It is generally harmless for most people to drink tonic water daily in moderation. Quinine is the ingredient in tonic water that is responsible for its semi-bitter and dry taste. The alkaloid is derived from cinchona bark and can lead to quinine toxicity in high doses. This is most often a concern in medication form or for people with certain medical conditions, and it can interact with some medications. To ensure the tonic water sold in the U.S. is safe, the FDA limits how much quinine can be present in tonic water.

Best for Gin and Tonics: Bombay Sapphire at Drizly
There are just enough floral notes in this gin to make it shine when combined with tonic water and a slice of lemon or lime.
Best American:Dorothy Parker at Drizly
This is a thoroughly modern gin with hints of classicism, made using a botanical blend that includes elderberries, citrus, cinnamon, and hibiscus, along with the requisite juniper.
Gin can be distilled from almost anything, including grain, fruit, potatoes, or grapes. But what defines this ever-popular spirit is the predominant use of juniper, which must be included in the mix of botanicals that flavor this important cocktail component.
Gin, a descendant of the Dutch spirit genever, has been around for centuries. Once known as mothers ruin, gin has been experiencing a renaissance over the past few years, with large and small distilleries alike producing various styles like London dry, barrel-aged, and New Western.
Whether you are in the mood for classic cocktails like a Martini or Gin and Tonic or looking to make something more adventurous, here are some of the best gins out there to try now.
Seafood Is Always A Save
Snacking on seafood and washing it down it G& T for a flavour that compliments the brightness of the cocktail is all you need if you are a seafood lover.
Cold cleansed smoked salmon, with a little spicy kick, is a delicious combination with your classic Gin & Tonic. The fat in smoked salmon or gravlax provides a rich taste when combined with G& T. For a little bit of refreshing flavour, use a dash of fresh lemon juice on the fish.
Prawns & Shrimps
Shrimps go impeccably well with a G& T. So does prawns. A prawn toast with sesame seeds is the best way to pair prawns with your gin and tonic.
Fish and Chips
This may sound a bit contradictory to the normal belief – but it is a really refreshing contrast to the rich smack. Gin can take a bit of garlic too if you want to serve a dollop of aioli on the side.
