T1 Tequila Uno Estelar Aejo

It’s quite common for añejo tequila to be compared to cognac or single-malt scotch for its depth of flavour. Skyy Spirits is building on its recent growth spurt.

Skyy the San Francisco-based North American base of operations for Italian parent Gruppo Campari is looking to add at least six and staffers to its current roster of 92, including senior brand managers for its Wild Turkey bourbon and Cordials brands.

In June 2009, just after Campari made San Francisco its North American headquarters, Skyy had 62 staffers, most of them based in the city, with a small production facility in San Jose and a few workers in home offices.

A Triumphant Return to Tejas

On this soggy and swampy St. Patricks Day, I was graciously invited to spend the afternoon at Sams Burger Joint by Mexican Moonshine creator and indie music rock star, Roger Clyne. He had arrived in Texas for a busy week of concerts at the famed music, media, film conference and festival, South By Southwest in Austin.

With additional gigs in San Antonio and New Braunfels, this night he was slated to perform an acoustic set at Sams Music Hall with his Arizona Peacemaker compadre, Jim Dalton. The rest of the band would catch up later as they traveled by bus.

Over a burger and a cerveza , Roger and I caught up on current events.

When We Last Left Our Hero

When we last saw Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers in 2013 and sipped and talked tequila on his tour bus, his then Texas spirits distributer had suddenly and unceremoniously dumped Mexican Moonshine tequila, despite its growing sales and Rogers staunch Texas fan base.

Undaunted, he continued to seek more adequate representation for Mexican Moonshine in what is arguably one of the biggest tequila-consuming states in the Southwest.

This time around, Clyne elected to join forces with a much

smaller, boutique distributer. However, he is keenly aware that such a decision can be a double-edged sword in the spirits business.

In a recent interview with BusinessWeek.com, former VAN HALEN singer Sammy Hagar explains how and why he decided to sell a majority stake in his $60 million-a-year Cabo Wabo tequila business to Campari/Skyy.

“My first intention was just to have this little tequila brand for my friends at the cantina and then bring it to America,” Hagar says. “I thought it’d be awesome if we did 10,000 cases a year. Our first year, we sold 37,000 cases. Then it exploded and it really started getting away from me, because I’m not a good day-to-day business guy. You know, my feet are in the sand day to day. Cell phones on the beach I don’t like it. I feel like an idiot. People look at me funny. I get one white ear out of it, you know what I mean?

“Ever since I started, people have been trying to buy Cabo Wabo even when it was the smallest little company. And as it really started growing in the past few years, I’ve been bogged down with the business side of it. I love this brand but I also have my music business to look after.

“So, when Campari/Skyy Spirits approached me late last year with an offer to go global, I agreed.

Tequila connoisseurs always have a favorite, or a brand they can name right off the top of their heads. Rock fans from the 80s and 90s will instantly recognize Cabo Wabo Blanco Tequila, and maybe even in certain areas of California, since it is starting to make a comeback. its a famous brand because of its famous creator and founder, Sammy Hagar of Van Halen and is brand encompasses three styles of tequila, which Ive had the pleasure of tasting. Ive had blanco straight and in cocktails and its an awesome tequila, but not the best Ive ever tried.

Quite possibly the reason this tequila is so popular is because of its famous founder, in addition to genius marketing tactics, but I am of leery about liquor that is created or endorsed by celebrities. I generally like to know very little about what I drink and I dont care to know whos behind the brand. Cabo Wabo Blanco Tequila is one of the most famous brands because of Sammy Hagar and he is hard to avoid. Quite a few newbie rock and rollers want to be associated with this brand en order to boost their own image and get in on the seemingly endless marketing tactics this brand creates especially since Hagar himself signed a guitar and case of Cabo Wabo to charity with his car on a Barrett Jackson celebrity charity auction! It makes it hard to be subjective when taste testing the brand.

The worlds first celebrity tequila begins with a People spread from December 1983 showing the nuptials of rocker Keith Richards and model Patti Hansen at the Finisterra Hotel in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Back in Southern California, a Richards worshipper and growing rock star himself, Sammy Hagar, saw the magazine and thought the luxury resort looked pretty spectacular he immediately booked a trip down with his wife. In those days, there was only one flight per day and, even if there were then mostly dirt roads leading from Los Cabos International Airport to the Twin Dolphin resort, Hagar still thought it was heaven on earth.

Hagar would become a regular visitor to the town of 6,000 on the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, visiting roadside taco shacks, basking in the sun and surf with some grilled fish and a local brew, and enjoying glasses of real tequila, which he quickly fell for on a day trip to Jalisco while shopping for furniture.
