Ron De Jeremy Spiced Rum Hardcore Edition 47%: 3690 For 70cl Urban Drinks

Barti Spiced Rum Review | What to mix with Spiced Rum Drinks

Were guessing elderly, ex-pornstar Ron Jeremy doesnt get as many bookings as he used to, hence hes turned his attentions to the delicate art of rum making. The suggestive brand marketing leans heavily on Jeremys eye-popping career, but to be fair on Ron, this is a fine booze that more than holds its own in the spiced rum market. It comes in two varieties, the Original Spiced, and our favorite, Rons Hardcore Edition a strapping 47 per cent beast, packed with bold notes of butterscotch, cloves and allspice. Sip it naked, splash it over ice, or slip it into a cocktail for a spicy surprise.

Best Spiced Rums For Every Taste

Rum is one of the worlds most popular base spirits for drinks, and spiced rum offers a sweetly complex option that may seem more palatable to cautious tipplers who prefer an accessible spirit. Determining the best spiced rum is subjective, but there are a number of spiced rums that have received high critical acclaim, won awards awards, garnered overwhelmingly positive consumer reviews, or a combination of these.

What’s The Difference Between Light And Dark Rum

In terms of the distinction between those two major categories of rum, the differences aren’t as much product of what’s done to the rum as much as where it ages. Most jurisdictions require all rums to age for at least a year, and some of the finer Jamaican rums typically age for upwards of five. These days, your lighter, younger rums are often aged in stainless steel tanks. On the other hand, your darker, aged rums primarily get their color from aging in oak barrels. Sometimes, caramel is added once the aging process is complete in order to really amp up that amber, golden hue.

These Spiced Rums Will Make You a Believer

The next one I want to showcase Ive been banging on about this for the best part of two years now and it’s still unheard of. Its amazing this is Schweppes 1783 Muscovado Dark Spirit Mixer. It does exactly what it says on the Tin. It’s meant to go with all kind of dark spirits. I absolutely love it with rum. Most supermarkets will sell the cans, in packs of six. They’re on offer now two pounds, but normally two pound fifty for six cans. Absolutely amazing. Clues in the title, its got that Muscovado kind of got that Sugary, Dark Brown Sugary taste. I absolutely, my favourite serves with this now, is kind of like a Pineapple Rum the Pineapple and the Muscovado just works exceptionally well. But if you like drinks like Mai Tais and things like that, you can kind of lengthen it out with that, but just try it, try it with just rum, Muscovado, maybe a wedge of lime or something like that, absolutely cracking. It’s in every supermarket, go and get some now.

    How Long Does Rum Last

Rumbullion Spiced Rum Review | What to mix with Spiced Rum Drinks

Basically, the shelf life of rum indefinite. That means your bottle of Bacardi or Captain Morgan is perfectly safe sitting in that cabinet. As long as its unopened and the seal isnt compromised in any way, the rum should be as good twenty years from now as it is today.

After opening the bottle the shelf life of rum stays indefinite, but it slowly deteriorates.

Thats why most people recommend drinking liquors within a couple of months after opening the faster, the better. The longer it stays open, the worse its taste will be. Of course, as already mentioned, it will take probably at least a few years to even tell the difference in taste.

An important thing to note is that all of the above applies to pure rum. There are some rum-based products on the market like Malibu rum, which is a coconut rum, that dont last that long.

If your bottle isnt about 80 proof , its most likely a liqueur based on rum and in most cases, it will taste great only within a few months of opening. A good example of that is RumChata, that retains best flavor for up to a year.

One quick reminder base liquors no longer age once theyre bottled. The same applies to rum. As Ive mentioned earlier, rum in an unopened bottle should basically taste the same today and 20 years from now.

Dont fall under the wrong impression that keeping a bottle of rum for years will make the rums taste better. It wont.

    Stays fine indefinitely

It is not necessary to use a premium cognac he suggests using a high-proof VS cognac that is affordable. Because of the higher alcohol content, the sweetness of the other ingredients will be cut through.

How To Make A Spiced Rum

Its important to note that alcohol is a solvent. Not all ingredients are safe or legal for infusions. Before you start to make your own spiced rum, refer to Cocktailsafe.org to make sure any spices and botanicals that you use are safe for consumption.

Also, spiced rum isnt an exact science. Its more of an exploration of flavor, so embrace the creative process and trust your palate.

The recipe below is only a template, so feel free to make it your own. Here are a few steps and tips to get started.

  • Start with a white rum with 45-50% alcohol by volume . Doorlys Three-Year-Old or Chairmans Reserve White Label are good choices, as they dont already have sugars added.
  • A good proportion of cane sugar to spirit is between 15 to 25 grams of sugar per liter of rum, or 1.5% to 2.5% of the liquid volume of the rum. For example, for one bottle of rum, you would add 15 grams of sugar, which is a little less than 4 teaspoons.
  • Start by infusing a smaller portion of rum just in case you dont like your spice mix. A good place to start is 1 cup. After 1 or 2 days, youll have a good idea whether or not you like the flavor. Another method is to make a few one-ingredient infusions, like cinnamon rum or pineapple rum, and then blend them together so you can pinpoint which flavors you like. This is more time consuming, but worth it to eliminate unwanted flavors.
  • Once you get to your desired flavor, you can fine-strain the rum into a separate bottle or leave it with its spices.

    A Brief History Of Rum

How To Make Three Spiced Rum Recipes : Extract Flavour With Infusion!

Rum has always held its place in history among the other spirits. Though it was created in the Caribbean, the American colonists first mass-produced the drink in the 18th century.

It didnt take off for several years. The spread of this spirit was slow and steady, enduring several obstacles in its path to fame.

For one, its production was severely affected by the Sugar Act of 1754, which ultimately contributed to the spark of the American Revolution. Sugar cane, the main ingredient in rum, was a major factor in the American colonies success. When Great Britain imposed this tax on the crop, the colonies economy was greatly affected.

Then, during Prohibition, rum was outlawed completely. It was during these times that the popularity of the spirit blew up in the black market. It became one of the most sought-after spirits in the country. Smugglers of the drink were known as rum runners.

Rum is a cultural symbol in many nations. For a lot of people, the significance of rum goes beyond just an alcoholic beverage. For instance, in Jamaica, rum is used to ward away evil spirits called Duppies. It is viewed by many in the country as sacred. Rum can also be used to christen newly born babies and bless the dead. This spirit is also used in Jamaica medicinally to cure colds.

Even in Australia, the people adore their rum, so much so that it was used as a currency in the country.

Does Rum Have More Sugar Than Other Spirits

Not too long ago, we talked about dosagethe addition of a bit of sugar to the final product to determine sweetness levels. It was actually surprising to realize that within all the refinements and rustic precision of sparkling wine production, something so simple as a spoonful of sugar might have a necessary place in the quality of the final product. Lesson learned.

However, we definitely had no idea this was the case for rum. Like corn-heavy bourbon, sugar cane-derived rum is a perceptibly sweeter spirit. And like bourbon, its often described with terms that might fit on a dessert menu: caramel, fig, banana, tropical fruit, vanilla, brown sugar, the list goes on. But we always thought these were just perceptions of flavor that suggested sweetness, especially since no actual sugar can make it through the distilling process. As with bourbon, distilled rum is theoretically sugar-free. Best diet ever!

Here comes the mind-blown/the-more-you-know moment: finished rum is not necessarily sugar free, including many rums you know and love. Thats right, rum can actually have a dosage all its owna small amount of sugar thats added to the finished product to achieve a desired flavor profile.

Not that this impeaches the overall quality of a rum you know and love. Just remember, next time you polish off a tumbler of 23 year, you might wanna brush your teeth.

Why Is Homemade Spiced Rum Better

As mentioned, spiced rum is super quick and easy to make you dont need advanced mixology skills to pull off a decent homemade spiced rum. All the required spices are typical grocery-store finds. And since you only need a dash of this and a pinch of that, the only real cost is the rum, and you dont need to spend a lot on that, either.

A bottle of commercial spiced rum isnât that expensive, so thats not the reason why you should know how to make spiced rum. The real reason is that many brands amplify the use of spices to hide the flaws of inferior rum, or in most cases, they just make it way too sweet. Whereas making drinks at home, you have more control in creating a more balanced spiced rum and sweeten it according to your specific liking.
