What Is Single Malt Whiskey
A common misconception is that a bottle of single malt whiskey has all come from the same barrel or batch, but this isnt the case. Most single malt whiskey will be a blend – which to add to further confusion, isnt the same as a blended whiskey. A single malt will likely be a blend of whiskey from different casks and, possibly, different ages, but these are all from the same distillery. Thats because the single in single malt means that all of the whiskey in the bottle has been produced by the same distillery.
As for the malt, this refers to the grain used in the whiskey, and to be a single malt whiskey, the grain must be one type – in Ireland, thats barley, which has been malted. We use 100% malted barley in our single malt whiskey, currently sourced from 11 growers in Wexford, but weve also recently planted our own barley on-site here in the Hazelwood Estate.

The word single is the most confusing part of single malt whiskey. That it does not mean that the whiskey comes from a single barrel or even from a single batch. Instead, these are typically blends of various barrel-aged whiskeys many single malt whiskeys in the world, regardless of style, are blended in some way.
The fact that single malt scotch is almost always a blend it is quite surprising for most drinkers. For example, the Glenfiddich 18 Single Malt Scotch is a mix of various whiskeys that have been aged in different barrels for at least 18 years. All of these were distilled from malted barley and produced at the Glenfiddich distillery, although some are over 18 years old.
Blending is how master stills are capable of guarantee a homogeneous taste in their whiskey year after year. If you taste one of the distillerys flagship expressions this year, it should be nearly identical to the one you tasted five years ago. On the other hand, if the distillery relied on a single barrel or batch, the whiskey profile would constantly change and ultimately leave consumers doubtful or even worse, disappointed. Not a bad thing, though the single cask or batch is generally reserved for special collections and the limited edition versions that many distilleries offer.
The one thing that continues to make Scottish single malts stand out is the use of peaty malt, which is also used in mixed scotch.

Maturation Blending And Bottling
Oak Aging: Scotch is required to be matured in oak for at 3 years minimum. The final heart distillate, a clear liquid is siphoned into specific casks for maturation. Most higher end scotches will be matured for at least 10-12 years, but they can be matured for many decades. Distilleries will use different types of casks to introduce different flavors into their scotch. Ex-sherry and ex-bourbon are two of the most common.
Blending: Before the scotch is bottled, the master distiller will taste each barrel to determine which flavors should be blended together to create the most interesting, pure, and consistent scotch. Once these blends are created, the result is bottled and shipped for us to enjoy!

Despite being called single malt and coming from one distillery it nonetheless contains more than one whiskey. This is because a single malt is a blend of the same whiskey from different casks and years. This is done because the taste of every run is slightly different and so must be blended in the above way to ensure a consistent and recognizable taste.
The only exception to this is if your single malt is also single cask / barrel whiskey which means it comes from one cask and is not blended even with the same whiskey from different casks and years, so it will have a completely unique taste.

What Differentiates Single Malt From Blended Scotch
Not every whiskey is called Scotch the name itself suggests that it is region-specific. You can make whiskey the world over, but you can never call it Scotch, unless it is made in Scotland. The basic difference between a single malt and blended Scotch is the distillation process. Single malt whisky is produced and bottled in a single distillery, whereas blended, as the name suggests, is a blend of two or more malt and grain whiskies. Lets dig into the details that follow.
The Making of Scotch: The basic ingredient of Scotch whisky happens to be malted barley. Though at times it can be prepared using rye or wheat, barley is the most preferred grain for producing Scotch. Other than barley, the other ingredients include water, yeast and an additive for coloring.

Vatted Or Blended Malt
A Vatted whisky and vatted malt are old terms for Blended malt. Blended malt scotch whisky is the legal, technical term for a blend of two or more single malt whiskys from two different distilleries. Simply, these are single malt scotches from different areas of Scotland that are blended together to create a new bottle with a specific taste profile.
How is this different from Single Malt? Remember single malt is a blend of matured scotches from all within one distillery, a highlight of that distillerys technique.
A vatted malt is a blend of matured scotches from different distilleries, usually created by a separate blending company.
Vatted or Blended Malt is probably the closest approximation of what double malt is intended to mean, though we cant be sure. Many vatted malt scotch bottles only include two distilleries and these will be marked on the bottle.
Other vatted malts include more than two single malts. The age stated on the bottle is still the youngest whisky included in the blend. Compass Box makes a number of these that we will discuss below!

Different Types Of Whisky
Grain whisky is made from a variety of grains, such as barley, wheat or maize, and is distilled in a column or reflux still. Think of it as an unfiltered grain vodka thats had a few years maturing in oak. Cheap and easy to make in bulk, youll find it makes up a good portion of blended whiskies, but its unlikely youll find it bottled and on the shelf at your local. Malt whisky, by comparison, is made strictly from malted barley, and is double or triple distilled in a traditional copper pot still. These two types of whisky form the basic building blocks for every whisky on the market.

What Is Single Malt Whiskey Made From
Single malt whiskey is made like any other whiskey: Grains are fermented with yeast to convert the sugars into alcohol, and the liquid is distilled into a concentrated alcoholic beverage before it’s aged in barrels, blended, and bottled. Single malt whiskey distillers simply apply a few special techniques along the way, and they’re often similar to making scotch.
All malted whiskey begins its life in the same way as most beer. Typically made with barley , the raw grains are malted by soaking them in water to start the germination process, then heat is applied to stop the grain from sprouting entirely.
