Simple Lime White Claw Cocktail Recipe With Vodka
If youre a Millennial, chances are youve had a White Claw . This alcoholic sparkling water seemed to become an instant hit overnight, and for a while, it was almost impossible for stores to keep this brand on the shelves.
Due to its popularity , I thought it was time to make a simple White Claw cocktail recipe to see if I could enhance this drink.
If You Drink White Claw Every Night You Could Get Gas
Yes, White Claw is low cal and low carb, but you could experience some negative side effects if you drink White Claw every night most notably, gas.
According to Maggie Moon, MS, RDN, who spoke with Men’s Health, when you drink carbonated beverages you undoubtedly swallow air which eventually must exit your system as a “fart or a belch.”
“Carbonated drinks release carbon dioxide gas, adding to the air in your esophagus that finds its way back out through belching,” Moon told Men’s Health. If you find that you’re farting excessively after drinking carbonated beverages, Moon says it’s likely more a “result of bacteria interacting with stomach acid, fatty acids, or unabsorbed carbohydrates .” Moon suggested to consume smaller amounts or to drink more slowly, which can help you avoid ingesting a lot of air. She also advised drinkers to “skip the straw.”
So, when you think of foods that can cause gas, you better add White Claw to the list.
Is Hard Seltzer Healthier Than Beer
Q: Are hard seltzers better for you than wine or beer? A: Hard seltzers are lower in carbohydrates and calories than other alcoholic beverages, but that doesnt mean theyre healthy. A can of seltzer has about the same number of calories and the same alcohol content as a light beer and its gluten-free.

Why Do You Fart More As You Get Older
The longer food sits in your system, the more gas-producing bacteria build up, causing abdominal discomfort. You also produce more gas as you age due to slowing down of your metabolism and slowing down of the movement of food through the colon. Yes, even the intestinal tract naturally slows down over time.
Are Hard Seltzers Good Or Bad For You
A lot of people think that just because White Claw and other brands are sold in grocery stores next to club sodas and ginger beer, a can of hard seltzer to them is like the innocent kind of alcohol with a halo above its head. On paper, hard seltzers are lower in carbohydrates and calories than other alcoholic beverages, but thats not a lot to go on with when talking about health benefits.
On the pros column, its already established that hard seltzers are low in calories and carbs. Numbers-wise, its a safer type of alcohol compared to a regular beer, a , or a . But on the flip side, health experts also warn that these very safe-sounding attributes the low calories, the low carbs, and the low alcohol are the very things that make hard seltzers dangerous. How? Binge drinking.
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration , having 4 or more alcoholic beverages for women or 5 or more alcoholic beverages for men over 2 to 3 hours is considered binge drinking.
Binge drinking puts people at risk of accidents, injuries, and other long term negative health effects. Theyre also at increased risk of alcohol poisoning, a serious and potentially deadly effect of drinking too much alcohol over a short period. People who binge are usually drinking beyond their normal levels, and drinks like hard seltzers reinforce that by giving them the idea that its safe to drink no matter how many cans you consume.

How Tax Policy Gave Us White Claw
Im kind of amazed the White Claw craze didnt happen sooner.
As a gay man in New York with a well-stocked bar, I am used to my friends coming to my apartment and asking for vodka sodas. What people like about a vodka soda is what it doesnt contain. All it has is alcohol, water, and carbonation no extra flavorings, no caffeine, and no calorie content other than from alcohol. Its the chicken breast of mixed drinks: broadly acceptable, gets the job done, nothing fancy. So, why did it take so long for it to come ready-to-drink in a can?
Part of the answer lies in the fact White Claw, which markets itself as hard seltzer and spiked sparkling water, is not precisely a vodka soda in a can. It doesnt contain vodka or any other distilled spirits. Instead it is made through fermentation, like beer, but starting from a base of sugar instead of cereal grains like barley. Then, carbonated water and flavoring are added.
Because White Claw is brewed like beer, its taxed like beer, which is important because beer is taxed in the U.S. at a much lower rate than spirits. If you made a product similar to White Claw by mixing vodka with seltzer and putting it in a can, a six-pack would be subject to almost $2 in additional taxes when sold in New York City.
In my view, the beer-like alcohol content of White Claw is a feature, compared to the hand-mixed vodka sodas you might drink it as a replacement for.

Millennials Love Hard Seltzer
Its no surprise that millennials are the core demographic for hard seltzers. It was unprecedented the way White Claw, Truly and Bon & Viv hard seltzer sales skyrocketed just between June to August of 2019. It was so huge that those 3 brands alone outsold the top six beer brands combined.
Millennial drinkers are more likely to go for flavored malt alcoholic beverages, most commonly hard lemonade and prepared cocktails than other drinkers from another age bracket. That plus the fact that theyre already the foremost consumer of flavored sparkling water even before the summer of seltzer happened.
Another reason could be because this demographic is also more likely to be health-conscious and body-conscious compared to others. These are the people who like to count calories and give huge importance to physical attractiveness, exercise, and physical activity. Giving them something like White Claw, with all its low-carb, low-calorie attributes, is basically like creating the official drink of an entire generation.
Now, White Claaaaaaaw! is the new battle cry of spring break regulars and frat boys all over the US, and also sparked the now-popular adage, Aint no laws when youre drinking Claws. It is even the subject of a viral video about the hysteria over the sparkling alcoholic drink.
Is White Claw Ok To Drink
One popular brand of hard seltzer called White Claw contains 100 calories and 2 grams of carbohydrates per 355 mL can, with an alcohol content of 5 percent. Thats similar to many brands of light beer. Such numbers have led marketers to push hard seltzers as a good choice for health-conscious consumers.

Technically White Claw Is A Malt Beverage
There’s a lot of hype surrounding White Claw, especially as some regard the sparkling beverage as a “vodka soda in a can.” And while it may resemble your favorite refreshing cocktail from the bar, according to Vine Pair, it’s definitely not a vodka soda or the newest IPA on the market. But what exactly is it?
According to Vine Pair, this bubbly sensation is a flavored malt beverage. A White Claw rep told Vine Pair it’s “a blend of seltzer water, its gluten-free alcohol base, and a hint of fruit flavor.” And it’s in the same line of beverages as its cousin, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, as well as other portable drinks like Smirnoff Ice and wine coolers.
But according to Eater, White Claw just might be more of an upscale version than your everyday malt beverage. “It’s an upscale, aspirational brand, one that doesn’t carry the same trashy, low-budget connotations as other malt liquor beverages like wine coolers,” they said. But whatever level of the pedestal you decide to place White Claw on, it’s still made through a similar process as other malt beverages.
White Claw To Launch Hard Seltzer With Higher Alcohol Content
Americans drink more alcohol now than they did 100 years ago
Drinking in America is not only on the rise, but at a higher level now then when the substance was banned a century ago.
White Claw announced a slow rollout of its newest beverage, White Claw Surge, which contains 8% alcohol as opposed to the traditional 5%.
The newest addition to the popular hard seltzer brand will be available this summer, according to an emailed statement.
The retail price for a can of White Claw Surge will be around $2.99 and the new flavors include blood orange and cranberry.

Additionally, White Claw has introduced three new flavors for their traditional hard seltzer, including mango, strawberry, pineapple and blackberry.
The new White Claw Variety Pack Flavor Collection No. 3 is available where all alcohol is sold, nationwide, according to the company.
Marketed as a healthier alternative to beer or hard cider, White Claw was an ultra-popular drink of summer 2019. Sales of the low-calorie hard seltzer leapt up 283 percent year-over-year in July of 2020, netting more than $327 million, according to Nielsen data.

White Claw Has Just About The Same Amount Of Alcohol As A Beer
Part of the allure of White Claw is the ability to consume alcohol in an easily-drinkable can. Some might even say it’s totally smashable. The same allure has existed for beer for years, partially due to the portability of the product, but White Claw is closely matching it now.
According to the Public Health Institute, a light beer’s alcohol content has historically been 4.2 percent alcohol by volume . For standard beer, you’ll typically see five percent, while a craft beer or stronger beer styles such as a porter or stout can range from six percent to 12 percent. But it’s not often you’re chugging a stout at the beach or on a boat on the lake. They’re just not that refreshing. And that’s where the beauty of White Claw comes in for most consumers.
With five percent ABV in a 12-ounce can, White Claw can pack just as much of a punch as most standard beers. According to The Spruce Eats, ABV labels explain exactly how much actual alcohol can be found in a beverage. For White Claw, that means its 12-ounce can, at five percent ABV, has .6 ounces of pure alcohol. That’s less than your average shot glass, but can add up quickly once you sip more than one and that happens pretty easily when you’re sipping something fruity and refreshing.

Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer
Smirnoff released their very own spiked seltzer in the same year as White Claw and Truly, and immediately it became a top contender in the industry. Their version takes on a similar flavor profile to the popular Smirnoff Ice.
- Number of Flavors: 5
- ABV: 4.5%
- Trivia: Earlier this year, Smirnoff released a new hard seltzer that has almost double the alcohol content of the original. The Smirnoff Seltzer 8% Spiked, as the name suggests, has 8% ABV and comes in two flavors: Blood Orange and Blackberry.
White Claw Is Not Vodka Or Beer
White Claw has been compared to everything from vodka soda to the new IPA. Its neither of these things.
White Claw is a flavored malt beverage . Its made with a blend of seltzer water, its gluten-free alcohol base, and a hint of fruit flavor, a brand representative tells VinePair. The alcohol in White Claw Hard Seltzer comes from fermented sugars derived from malted gluten-free grains. While this doesnt exactly clarify things, our best guess is that its made with cane sugar, which is listed as an ingredient in several variants.

How White Claw Managed To Outsell Budweiser
How has disruptive food and beverage brand White Claw managed to outperform the nation’s number one beer Budweiser? Well, as with many of the rapid changes we are seeing in the industry today, the answer lies in demographics specifically, Millennials.
For all the disparaging comments and articles about this generation we see from certain outlets and commentators, Millennials are now a dominant market force. Now in their mid-twenties to late thirties, this cohort has taken their place in the higher levels of the US workforce and has significantly more money available to them to spend on the things they like. With most not able to invest in things like property at the moment, they are choosing to spend their cash elsewhere instead.
This is something a fresh and savvy brand such as White Claw understands all too well, and this knowledge has allowed them to slip in under the radar and usurp classic drink brands such as Budweiser from their lofty perches.

Are White Claws Better For You Than Beer
From a nutrition standpoint, spiked seltzers do tend to have fewer calories and carbohydrates compared to most beers and mixed drinks. Most spiked seltzers run about 100 calories and 2 grams of carbohydrates per 12 ounce can, compared to 150 calories and 15 to 30 grams of carbohydrates in a similar-sized beer .
Fewer Calories Means Fewer Nutrients
However, just because hard seltzers commonly have fewer calories per serving than other alcoholic drinks does not mean that they are good for you. Youre not getting any nourishment from these brightly colored cans, so lets stop thinking that.
The ingredients of the very first hard seltzer brand, Bon & Viv Spiked Seltzer , consist of water, corn syrup, natural flavors, sodium citrate, and malted rice. This is a common recipe for many brands, with some swapping corn syrup for cane sugar.
Contrary to popular belief, when you consume spiked seltzer, you are not actually consuming seltzer with vodka or another clear alcohol. You are drinking sweetened seltzer water that has gone through the fermentation process. This is very similar to the way in which the sugars in barely are fermented to make beer, though it is commonly gluten-free .
Even though some spiked seltzers have no added sugar, they still contain empty calories with next to no real nutritional value. And hard seltzers that have been flavored with fruit juice contain an amount so small that it usually fails to equal even one serving of fruit.
