Alternatives To 1800 Tequila

1800 Reposado Tequila 1.75L Habersham Beverage

1800 is not a bad Tequila, but I wouldnt call it anything special either. Its fine for a night out on the town, or in a cocktail or two if thats whats on the menu, but there are many alternatives that are higher quality for similar prices. Ill introduce a few of those brands below.

First off, I have to mention Patron. Owned by Bacardi, Patron is probably the second most widely recognized name in Tequila . Bottled at 40% ABV, Patron is similar to 1800 in many other ways as well. First off, both are marketed as top-shelf Tequilas, both are at least partially made using diffuser methods, and both are surpassed in quality by lesser-known and less expensive brands. As with 1800, you could do a lot worse than drinking Patron in your margarita, and at many bars Patron or 1800 may simply be the best available option for Tequila. However, there are better buys for your home bar if youre willing to search for them.

  • Espolon

Espolon is one of those better buys I mentioned earlier. Its usually priced a few dollars cheaper than Patron or 1800, yet is not made using a diffuser and is similar or even superior in quality. Espolon is made with 100% Blue Weber Agave. It is owned by the Campari Group, bottled at 40% ABV from NOM 1440 in Los Altos, Jalisco, and available in Blanco, Reposado, Anejo, and Anejo X bottles.

What Is The Difference Between Reposado And Aejo Tequila

Reposado Tequila is lighter in color and flavor than an because it is not aged as long. Reposado is aged between two months and just under a year, while Añejo is aged for one to three years. Another distinction is that Añejo Tequila must be aged in an oak barrel no larger than 600 liters. By contrast, Reposado can mature in any size oak container. Spending more time in a smaller oak container gives Añejo a deeper color and more flavor.

There are several different kinds of Tequila, and most are categorized according to how long theyre aged. The three main types of Tequila are silver or Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo. In 2006, a new category called was created. Here is a breakdown on how long each style is aged:

    • Blanco or can be bottled immediately or aged up to two months.
    • Reposado Tequila is aged for two to 12 months in an oak container, giving it time to turn a pale golden color.
    • Añejo Tequila spends one to three years in an oak barrel similar to the ones used for aging whiskey or wine. It gets smoother, darker and the taste is sweeter thanks to the barrel.

    How To Drink 1800 Tequila

How you drink 1800 Tequila will depend on the particular type you choose.

1800 Silver is perfect for making cocktails thanks to its smoothness and subtle flavours. But thanks to its lower price tag, the Reposado can also be mixed into cocktails when youre looking for something extra special.

For bourbon or whisky drinkers looking to experiment, the 1800 Añejo is a perfect springboard into the world of sipping tequila with its warm spices and sweet tones. Serve in a rocks glass or whisky snifter and take your time to explore the complicated flavours.

When it comes to looking after your bottle of 1800 Tequila, avoid direct sunlight. We also recommend you steer clear of the freezer. When the spirit is too cold, you cant pick up the subtle aromas.

    The Agave Harvesting Process

In addition to increasingly limited supply, harvesting and preparing agave is still a very manual process. Many spirits have seen a mechanization and automation of this part of the process, with the advent of modern farming methods. Tequila making, specifically harvesting blue agave, continues to be a human-driven task.

The process of harvesting agave is still passed down generationally, rather than via a manual or online training modules. Tending to agave is arduous, as the plants require constant monitoring and pruning . Only those who work the agave fields know when it is ready to be harvested, as there are no obvious indicators for those lacking experience.

Harvesting agave is not as simple as observing that a plant looks mature and ready to be turned into a fermented product called wort. The jimadores are experts, with vast experience, in knowing when the agave plant has just enough carbohydrates and just enough sugar to ferment properly.

As you can imagine, with so much experience and manual labor required, a product like agave can be quite expensive. Thus, the labor intensive and specialized harvesting process alone can drive the cost of tequila.

    Aejo Vs The Competition

    • Casamigos Añejo
    • Don Julio Añejo
    • Patron Añejo

The añejos of 1800 and Casamigos are in a dead heat for a tequila drinkers favor.

Both have varying fruits, confectioneries and spices in their respective palates, with the Casamigos displaying bits of custard, oak, sweet vanilla, citrus, papaya, mango, toffee penny and dark chocolate. What could make 1800 Añejo win over fans could be the finish, as the Casamigos Añejo exhibits a slight burn of a finish in the gullet.

When ranged against Patron añejo, what could tip eyes, mouths and preferences towards the 1800 añejois consistency of flavor.

In the Patron añejo, vanilla, raisins and oak wood are present in the taste, but they do not try to compete with the lead peppery rush of agave. Patron goes down the throat smoothly too, aided by dints of caramel and ever-so-slight white oak smokiness.

However, this taste and finish range from bottle to bottle. Much like the 1800 Tequila | The Ultimate Margarita, Patrons añejois a love-hate affair. Some claim that the Patrons añejotaste is rather synthetic, while others claim that the sweet-and-pepper combo in the palate is very much the real thing.

The añejos Don Julio and 1800 seem like they are evenly matched, but it is in the consistency of taste AND smoky presence that makes the Don Julio version the preferred one.

    Whats Worth The Splurge

    1800 Reposado

I dont drink only cheap tequila, of course, especially when Im writing about some all-inclusive resort and its an open bar. If you want to know my favorites if money is no object, those would be Don Julio 1942 and Clase Azul in the nice porcelain bottle. The 99,000 Horas from my home state of Guanajuato is quite good too and is a terrific value. Cuervos Reserva de la Familia makes a great gift because the artistic box changes each year and it is consistently good, but I personally would have trouble parting with a hundred bucks to purchase it myself.

Despite what the marketers want you to believe, there is very little correlation between price and quality. This is very clear every time you see the winners from spirits competitions where there was a blind taste test. If you see a bottle at the duty-free shop thats $250, you can bet that $200 of that is usually going to marketing and packaging. Those bottles seldom rank the highest in judging competitions. You can often do just as well by spending far less.
