How Many Calories In Whiskey

Whiskey Calories Per Shot

How many Calories are in whiskey?

Before we give you the lowdown on what you can and cant order next time youre at the bar, let us give you a little bit of nutritional information. To start with, not all drinks are created equal. Cocktails for example are notoriously surgery, which is why they are so nice. So, it is not the drink per se that is the problem, rather, what you mix into it. Our suggestion is to choose something that is high in taste but low in calories we love single malt for exactly these reasons. At just 3 calories per gram its one of the lowest alcohols on the market and plus the taste sensation of single malt is simply unbeatable . For example a Scotch on the rocks is only around 80 calories per 35ml shot, which is just over half that of a glass of rosé. Similarly, a Whiskey Sour is much lower in calories than a Long Island Iced Tea, .

Many Companies Use Different Methods To Distill The Liquor

Many companies now make Irish whiskey. They use different methods to distill the liquor. Some use boiling the whiskey and some use a pressurized process to lower the temperature and force the mixture through a filtering system. Either way, the end result is the same. The result is a wonderfully smooth and delicious drink.

How Many Calories Are In A Shot Of Irish Whiskey

How many calories are in an alcohol-infused shot of Irish whiskey? That is one question many people have asked themselves while sipping a refreshingly cool glass of this delightful drink. To answer this question, we need to first examine how the alcohol in Irish whiskey affects the body.

The alcohol in whiskey has no calories per se. In fact, there are zero calories in an alcohol-infused drink. Instead, the calories come from the alcohol and the sugar found within it. And as anyone who has drunk too much in one sitting can attest, drinking too much can be dangerous. In fact, it is illegal in many states to drive while intoxicated, and it can result in serious legal problems for those who are caught intoxicated by a law enforcement officer.

So how many calories are in an Irish whiskey? This depends on the type of alcohol you drink. Irish whiskey is usually either scented or unflavored. In both cases, the alcohol will have no effect on the body, but the amount you would consume depends on the type of drink you choose. For example, a whiskey taster will note that the flavor varies from one distiller to another. Some scents may contain more alcohol, some less.

Alcohol Content Affects Calorie Count

Whiskey consumed without any additional mixers will have miniscule amounts of carbs and zero fat or protein. Most of the calories in whiskey come from the alcohol content. And these increase upon the strength of the bottle depending on the ABV .

All thats left after distilling and filtration is alcohol, water and the congeners which give whiskeys characteristic aroma and taste. While the average 1½ ounce glass of whiskey is around 105 calories, not every whiskey is the same as the next. For instance, 140-proof whiskey will have considerably more calories than 80 or 40 proof. So, in general, stronger whiskeys will have more calories.

  • 70% ABV or 140 proof = 170 calories
  • 50% ABV or 100 proof = 124 calories
  • 45% ABV or 90 proof = 110 calories
  • 40% AVB or 80 proof = 96 calories

Another thing affecting the calorie count with a higher proof whiskey is the fact that sugar increases in concentration the longer it ages in a barrel. This isnt significant, but it is important to understand that it does increase. Once you get into 100 and 140 proof, youre looking at about 2 grams. Everything else will have one gram or less.

Get Out Of The Round System

Sake Calories

You arrive at the pub to meet your friends, and someone immediately asks you what you want from the bar. You dont want to complicate their order with an obscure light beer or expensive cocktail, so you just go along with the crowd. A pint of non-specific lager, please. And now youre trapped in a high calorie round-cycle, trying to keep pace with everyone out of politeness and buying endless drinks that you never even wanted in the first place.

Ducking out of the round system is not the cardinal sin you think it is. Its annoying having to go up to the bar every time, of course, but its worth it for the sake of exercising full control over your evening. Free yourself from that sense of obligation and just be honest about what youre trying to achieve. If your friends are in any way decent, theyll pay it no mind. If theyre not, theyll soon be too drunk to pay attention anyway.

It should also be said that the advent of drink-ordering apps at pubs has made going your own way that much easier. You no longer have to join the huddled masses at the bar, solo, vying for a member of staffs attention while the rest of your friends sup away in the background. Just insist from the very start that you want to order your own drinks, and do so with the minimum of fuss.

Once youve done that, try to stay aware about how fast youre drinking. Follow the mindfulness tips above. Savour the taste with greater intervals between sips. Youll end up drinking less and enjoying it more.

The key is getting the ratio of whiskey and lemon correct so the flavors compliment each other and one does not overpower the other.

Be Careful With Your Mixers

You now know the low-calory alternatives to enjoy your Scotch Whisky. But, naturally, there are also less healthy ways to enjoy it. If you mix a simple cocktail like a Whiskey Sour, you increase your calory intake by roughly 50%. The mix of syrup and lemon juice will make for a great drink, though.

The same also applies to Scotch Highballs not mixed with club soda but Tonic Water or Ginger Ale. These mixers also increase the calory intake by 50% or even more. It all depends on the amount of mixer and also the type or brand. But 50 percent is a lot. If you are on a diet, think twice if instead a regular Scotch & Soda can do the trick.

Best Rye: Pikesville Straight Rye

How Many Calories Are in a Shot of Whiskey?

Region: Kentucky | ABV: 55% | Tasting Notes: Cinnamon, Vanilla, Oak

Two styles of rye whiskey dominate the whiskey market these days: rye made from a 95% to 100% rye mash bill and the Kentucky-style mash bill that usually contains just above 50% rye, the minimum legally required to be classified as rye whiskey. Pikesville, which falls into the latter category, was originally made in Maryland and is now distilled in Kentucky by Heaven Hill. Try this in a classic cocktail like the Manhattan, where those characteristic spicy rye notes will harmonize beautifully with the rich sweetness of the vermouth.

Pikesville is my favorite rye because it provides a great symphony of flavors from the rye spice, baking spices, the high proof and maturation from the six years in the barrel. The strong taste of cherries, vanilla and baking spices gives it a really fun take on a cherry Coke. Paul Gonzalez, head bartender for the Allegory Bar at D.C.s Eaton Hotel

Eat A Sizeable Meal Before You Go Out

We know this sounds slightly counter-productive from a weight loss perspective, but hear us out. How many times have you picked up a light bite on your way to the pub, to line your stomach, only to grow ravenously hungry over the course of the night as the hours pass and the drinks go down? Youre not going to order that exorbitantly-priced salad on the menu your beer brain will simply not allow you to even consider it, and your body needs something more substantial anyway. Its just not healthy to stave off hunger or drink on an empty stomach! Even if you do manage to resist ordering that burger/Sunday roast/sharing platter of nachos, youre only kicking the can down the road towards the kebab shop, where youll soon be jabbing at a big styrofaom box of meat and chips.

Alcohol Changes Food Processing

Even though you may be able to have a glass or two of whiskey, understand that consuming alcohol will change how your body processes food. so, its just not all about how many calories in whiskey. Recent studies show how alcohol can retard oxidation of things like proteins, fats and carbs. It slows down how your body converts sugar for energy and fat burning.

This means that the sugars consumed during a night of drinking will store up in your fat cells rather than convert into energy for your body to use. Its this that causes weight gain in association with alcohol consumption.

Best Wine Barrel Aged: Starward Nova Single Malt

Region: Australia | ABV: 41% | Tasting Notes: Caramel, Plum, Burnt orange

If youve never tried an Australian whisky, youre not alone. Australia is a relative newcomer to the craft spirits scene, but the absence of any long-standing distilling traditions in that country has led to some innovative approaches to establishing a regional style. For Starward, the first Aussie distiller to achieve widespread distribution in the US, that innovation has taken the form of a unique aging process: when it comes time to put their single-malt whisky into barrel, they skip the ex-bourbon or Sherry casks, and instead source ex-shiraz and cabernet barrels from local wineries.

The result is an 82-proof whisky with a fruitier, jammier nose than anything found in Scotland . Playful notes of plum and cherry segue into a malty, toasty, and tannic palate that might just be the perfect stepping-stone for that wine drinker who thinks they dont like the hard stuff.

How To Choose A Honey Whiskey

With so many varieties on the market, how do you choose just one? If you are a fan of whiskey a particular whiskey, start with your go to brand. Many whiskey brands have their own honey version. Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, Black Eagle and more. They all have subtle differences just as their stand alone whiskeys do. After much taste testing I have settled on Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey to keep stocked in my bar. It has just the right amount of sweet and makes an excellent base for so many cocktails. Jack Daniels combine their signature whiskey with a honey liqueur that is brewed with real honey. The result is a smooth taste that is sweet without overpowering the whiskey.

Once you have a honey whiskey of your choice youll just need some lemonade. The simplicity of this cocktail makes it easy to make and enjoy at home. I prefer a brand of lemonade with pulp and lots of tangy citrus flavor. Stay away from overly sweet concentrate mixtures or this cocktail will not turn out well.

Check The Strength Of Your Whisky

Like many spirits, the amount of alcohol in whisky can vary significantly between brands and types. To find out how much alcohol is in your drink, check the label for the ABV, or ask your server before ordering. If your whisky has a 40% ABV that means it contains 40% pure alcohol.

There are a huge number of whisky varieties available, some of which can be much stronger than the standard 40% so its important to always familiarise yourself with the ABV of the whisky youre drinking. Units and calories will increase as the alcohol content increases, so if youre not sure, ask the person making your drink to double check. Best Sherry Cask Scotch: The Glendronach Allardice

Region: Highlands, Scotland| ABV: 46% | Tasting Notes: Dark chocolate, Walnut, Spice

For at least part of the aging process, many Scottish distilleries use sherry casks in addition to ex-bourbon barrels to add bold, dried fruit and spice flavors to the whiskey. But some distilleries exclusively age their whiskey in these seasoned barrels, like The GlenDronach.

The 18-year-old Allardice may not be the most famous single malt in the world, but it is perhaps one of the most perfect, says Daniel Burns, lead bartender at Elixir Saloon in San Francisco. Its deep sherry notes and flavors of toasted nuts and jammy fruit last seemingly forever on the palate. The 18-year-old whiskey is matured entirely in Spanish Oloroso sherry butts, no color is added, and it delivers one of the best full-flavored sipping experiences.

“If you can get your hands on The GlenDronach 18-year-old Allardice, count yourself lucky. It’s such a beautiful example of what can happen when you age a single malt in sherry casks for nearly two decadeswonderfully rich flavors emerge.” Prairie Rose, Editor
