How Is Spiced Rum Made

Making Your Own Spiced Rum Is Easier Than You Think

What is Spiced Rum?!

Do you have a little bit of Captain in you? Heres what you can do to find out: Create your own spiced rum and pit it against the most well-known commercial brands on the market. In fact, I can almost promise that youll be pleasantly surprised by how fantastic it actually is. In order to achieve this, you need not need a graduate degree in mixology. Creating spiced rum is about equivalent in difficulty to pulling ice out of a tray and making a nice Mai Tai, on a difficulty scale. Furthermore, the components are most likely already in your pantry or refrigerator.

  • Begin with a sip of one of your favorite rums.

Dont waste your money on an expensive, aged bottle the flavor isnt that much better, and the oakiness might cause conflict with the spices on some occasions.

Vincents golden rum , which was a new addition to my collection.

  • Pour the rum from the bottle into a wide-mouthed, airtight container, such as a Mason jar, and set the container aside.
  • After that, add a variety of herbs and spices and let it settle for a while.

When youre through with your spiced rum, what should you do with it?

  • Consider using it to make a hot Teatime Toddy during the winter months.
  • What Is The Difference Between Dark Rum And White Rum

Rums aged in stainless steel barrels and dark rums aged in oak barrels are the same however, white rum is aged in a stainless steel barrel. Dark rum is most commonly used in cooking, but it can also be consumed straight, without being mixed with anything, whereas white rum is more commonly used in cocktails.

    What Is It Exactly

Spiced rum is what it sounds like, rum with spices in it. The usual suspects in it are vanilla bean, cinnamon, allspice berries, star anise, and black pepper. Other recipes also add fresh ginger and nutmeg. We use these spices because theyre very similar to the flavor notes in most rums, especially the darker rums. Fun fact these spices are not used anywhere in the rum distilling process.

Rum is distilled in a similar way as whisky or bourbon in that its aged in oak barrels. The flavor notes like vanilla, spices, ect come from the oak barrels themselves. This is where spiced rum becomes its own thing because we add spices to the rum after the distilling process.

Different rums will have different flavor profiles based on their unique distilling process. Because of this its easy to customize what spices we add to our spiced rum. Feel free to play around and find a combo you like. I like to look at the rum Im using and see what the distiller lists as the flavor notes and play with those.

I love using this in all of my holiday drinks and some tiki drinks. Its great in Coquito and Crema de Vie and helps cut out steps in both drinks. They both call for added spices that youll need to strain out, but by using a spiced rum you can skip that step and save yourself the dirty dishes. Always a plus in my opinion. Its also great in spiked hot chocolate and hot toddies!

Ok the flavours have separate chemical taste about them. While you can sip it is boring and you get worries what chemistry formulas you are drinking. Alcohol taste not bad, little burn but thin, cold, boring.

But then add coke and it makes a full flavoured rum coke with or without ice. As though this rum was designed specifically for a rum- coke. For this reason I raise it to 6 from a 4. Of course fantastic value. For the summer not winter.

    Product Description And Packaging

Kraken Rum was introduced in 2010. The base rum is from Trinidad, distilled from molasses made from locally grown sugar cane. The rum is aged 12 years and then blended with a mix of 11 spices, including cinnamon, ginger and clove. The liquid is black, revealing hints of brown when held up to the light.

The bottle is styled after a Victorian rum bottle, with two hoop handles based on the tradition of hanging a bottle to prevent breakages. The bottle has a black and white paper label featuring an illustration of a Kraken sea creature. The bottle’s back label states that it is “imported rum from the Caribbean blended with natural flavors.”

Beginning in 2015, Proximo began selling Kraken Ghost White Rum exclusively in Mexico.

In early 2020, Kraken released two new pre-mixed flavours, Kraken & Dry and Kraken & Cola, increasing its hold on the Australian market.

What Other Types Of Rum Are There

    How to make Spiced Rum

There are five main types of rum. Each has a distinctive flavor profile and, in the case of gold and dark rum, a distinct color. Besides spiced, gold, and dark rum , rum is clear-colored.

Some types of rum are specific to different parts of the world, which also influences its flavorings. For example, dry and light-bodied rums are typical in Puerto Rico and The Virgin Islands, whereas the dark and full-bodied rums are most common in Jamaica and Barbados.

Here are the other types of rum and some information about each type:

    • Gold rum: This rum is caramel/gold in color with a much stronger flavor than silver rum. This pronounced flavor allows it to stand alone or make a dramatic addition to a cocktail. When it comes to cocktails, it is most typically found in mojitos.
    • Flavored rum: Flavored rum uses silver rum as its base and has flavor added to it. Tropical flavors are very popular, especially flavors such as pineapple and coconut.
    • Silver rum: Otherwise known as white rum, this is the classic clear rum that people use in Pina Coladas and daiquiris. This type of rum is actually aged in oak barrels and then filtered afterward to remove the color, resulting in clear alcohol.

The spiced rum realm has opened up a bit recently, with a couple of pretty decent brands joining the insipid confections that have dominated the category for so long. Some of these are definitely worth checking out, if you’re of the spices and rum orientation but keep in mind there’s always the possibility of making your own.

Making spiced rum is deliriously easy. Simply take your desired mix of spices and other ingredients, pop them in a bottle of rum for, oh, two days, then taste. Need the spice mix a bit stronger? Let it sit a day or two more, or, edit the taste profile as you go, adding more of an ingredient if you wish to push it forward.

A couple of tips: first, start slowit’s no problem to add more gusto to a spiced rum if, for example, the clove flavor isn’t as strong as you’d like, but it’s hell to get that flavor back out if you’ve added too much at the start.

Second, think about your rum the rum you like for sipping or for mixing mojitos may not be the best candidate here. I like something with a good, aged richness to it, but not something as gamy as Smith & Cross from Jamaica or as vegetal as a rhum agricolethese are some of my favorite rums ever, but for spiced rum I like to go with something softer and more buttery.

    • 1 750ml bottle decent aged rum

    • 1vanilla bean, split lengthwise

    • 3wholecloves

    • 3quarter-size piecesfresh ginger

    • 23-inch strips fresh orange zest, white pith removed

    What Is Rum Made From

The nutshell answer is: rum is made from sugar. To get a little more specific, rum is made from either cane sugar, or the byproducts of cane sugar, such as molasses and black treacle. Its then fermented, distilled, and aged in oak barrels. Other ingredients are sometimes added to create a wider variety of flavors, including caramelized sugar, fruit extracts, and spices. With modern, mass-produced rums, different ages of rum are blended to create a more consistent flavor, and caramel may be added at the end to create a uniform color from batch to batch.

One of the only things that hasnt changed throughout the ages is that rule that rum is made from cane sugar. The 1771 edition of Encyclopedia Britannica included this definition:

RUM. A species of brandydistilled from sugarcanes. Rum differs from simple sugar spirit in that it contains more of a natural flavour or essential oil of the sugarcane the flavour of rum is really the effect of the natural flavour of the cane.

Even if not used as ingredients, certain flavors are typically found in rum. This is due to the geographical surroundings of the sugar cane fields, as well as the production process. Lynn Hoffman, in her book, Short Course in Rum: A Guide to Tasting and Talking About Rum, she lists cane, caramel, vanilla, nutmeg, allspice, dried fruit, as common notes in good quality rums.

    But it doesnt stop here.

The Jacobite Base rum is now around 90% alcohol. So its time to distill it again, this time using our unique blends of international spices and Scottish botanicals. Wow, the place smells incredible now!

Finally, if its The 45 were making, we finish it in a Whisky Bourbon cask for a few weeks- just to soak up all that flavour!

The Future Of Spiced & Flavored Spirits

Spiced and flavored rums continue growing with offerings that have a sense of regionality through ingredients that only grow in specific locations as well as seasonality, and different infusion techniques. According to a EMRs report, the spiced and flavored rum industry reached a considerable value of about USD 6.2 billion in 2021, and currently it holds a significant share in the global market, which is expected to grow in the following years.

In the Asia Pacific and Europe, the spiced and flavored rum market is most likely to witness a rise in the forecast period as well. The growth in the region is being triggered by the rising consumer demand mostly from South Korea, Japan, China, India, the Philippines, and Germany.

Furthermore, the industry is significantly being supported by what is called the cocktail revolution, which has made this category gain attention from bartenders and drinkers who are interested in exotic flavors. What is more, the introduction of new varieties of spiced rum is expected to boost the growth of the market.

To sum up, these flavored rums are not only for people trying to be initiated into drinking a particular type of spirit but also for those who want to explore new exciting flavors. Just remember, the highly recommended spiced rums are those made with natural flavorings.
