Where Can I Buy Green Spot Irish Whiskey

From The Mitchell & Son Website

GREEN SPOT | Irish Whiskey Review

Green Spot is to the true Irish whiskey drinker what an Irish Round Tower is to the archaeologist. It is a beautifully preserved, almost living throwback to the old Ireland which takes some searching to locate, but once found, is an experience to savour. When I first discovered it, it was like finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Once upon a time in Ireland, many hundreds of wine merchants would fill their own casks with the spirit from their local distilleries and sell it under their own brand name, occasionally giving mention to the stills where it first bubbled into life. But all that changed when distillers became proprietorial and wished, often with good reason, due to the dubious practises of some merchants, to have complete control over any whiskey which bore their name . As businesses closed or merged, brands were lost. Others decided not to compete with the ever more powerful distillers. Some distillers simply refused to supply the whiskey.

The brand was originally known as Pat Whiskey, with a man looking very much the worse for wear apparently bursting through the label. Behind him was dark green shading. From this image grew the name Green Spot. The popularity of this type of whiskey spread to a seven year old Blue Spot, a Yellow Spot and Red Spot .

This stand out whiskey comes from the renowned Midleton Distilleries in county Cork. It colonists of an irresistible blend of whiskies with an average age of 7 9 years distilled in a single pot.

The Mitchell Family

Green Spot was originally produced exclusively for the Mitchell family who commenced trading in Dublin in 1805 as purveyors of confectionery, wines and fortied wines.

In 1887, this entrepreneurial family expanded into the whiskey bonding business whereby they sent empty wine, Sherry and port casks via horse and cart to the local Jameson Distillery which were then lled and returned to the Mitchells cellar warehouse. There the whiskies matured for many years under bond until they were ready to be bottled and sold.

Its name relates to the old practice of marking barrels with a daub of colour representing a particular age. Green Spots traditional green bottle is now replaced with a stylish clear glass bottle with higher shoulders, a shorter neck and an enlarged base offering the perfect backdrop for the striking new label.

Green Spot Irish Whiskey Review

Green Spot Irish Whiskey

Green Spot Irish Whiskey is a single pot still whiskey thats aged for 7-10 years which would make it a 7 year whiskey , but Midleton decided to leave it as a No Age Statement whiskey. Which is odd to me because they disclose the 7-10 age range on their site. I guess leaving it as NAS gives them the flexibility to drop it down to a 4-7 year whiskey if stocks get low without a new label approval, but maybe im being cynical.

To create the wonderfully robust aroma and flavor that is a delight to drink from start to finish they started with some single pot still distillate and then aged it in a combination of ex-bourbon, refill bourbon and ex-sherry casks. All 3 casks, even the refill, lend something new and interesting to the overall character. This whiskey is part of Mideltons Single Pot Still whiskey lineup along with Redbreast, MIdleton and Powers and it s a fine fine addition indeed.

Green Spot Irish Whiskey

Whiskey of all kinds has grown in popularity in recent years as people are starting to fall in love with the strong taste of whiskey combined with the wonderful undertones that each variety provides. Green Spot Irish Whiskey is another contender in the whiskey market. This Irish Whiskey has a wonderful whiskey taste, which is accentuated by the hints of aromatic spices and orchard fruit.

The whiskey has a hint of green apple and will leave you with a complex finish that combines the flavors of barley, spice, apple, and other flavors. If you are looking for a truly complex whiskey, then you need to try out Green Spot Irish Whiskey.

There Are A Few Bottles That Are So Uniformly Great That I Buy Them Constantly For Other People For Birthdays And Holidays Especially For The People In My Life Who When I Ask Them What They Want They Just Smile And Say Get Me Something Good

Green Spot Irish Whiskey

Despite the vagueness of good, to me it actually translates to a very specific set of marching orders. For someone just beginning to cut their teeth in a product category, it means something that’s nice enough to feel like a gift without being so nice that someone feels guilty about receiving it. It means being representative of a spirit type so that people will find it familiarso no gimmicks or fancy stuff.

And here’s another thing: it should also be pretty common, so if someone likes it they won’t have to trek up to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro to restock their empty bottle. If you want to create more friends you can talk about good booze with, it helps to make this hobby as accessible as possible.

What you get with Green Spot is a damned good Irish Whiskey that completely lacks the rough edges of something like Bushmills or Jameson.

For all of those reasons, Green Spot had been my go-to bottle whenever someone requested I get them a good Irish whiskey. And even for my friends and family who have had pricier stuff, Green Spot was never a wrong answer. And similar to the Glenlivet 15 , I realized I had bought several bottles for random people over the years without ever getting one for myself. I decided to rectify that recently, and the time spent with the Green Spot has felt like catching up with an old friend.

Tasting Notes: Green Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey

Vital Stats: 80 proof. Distilled from malted and unmalted barley. No age statement, crafted from a blend of seven to 10 year old whiskies. $40/700ml

Appearance: Green Spot pours somewhere between sunburnt straw and light amber, and possesses a regal clarity and brilliance in the glass. Its impressive legs are slow to droop and the body of the whiskey ripples like jelly when swirled fervently. This whiskey is inviting in its appearance but possesses a sly hint of warning within its caramel-colored depth.

Nose: The first inhale drags a bright cloud of tropical fruit over my palate, surprising as it is mouthwatering. Notes of golden raisin, guava, and papaya scream loudest, and palate acclamation brings subtler hints of cantaloupe, treacle, and dusty, spicy oak in to later breaths. There is a pronounced green apple tone that is more reminiscent of candy than actual fruit, and it lingers all throughout each breath in a very soft and balancing fashion.

Give Someone A Grand Introduction To Irish Whiskey By Sending Them One Of The Categorys Most Iconic Bottling As A Gift In The Form Of This Green Spot Pure Pot Still Irish Whiskey

Green Spot Irish Whiskey | The Whiskey Dictionary

Hailing from Dublin, Green Spot made its debut in 1920 as a bonded whiskey bottled by local grocer Mitchell & Sons. Despite building a loyal following of drinkers and being hailed by critics as one of the finest whiskeys in the world, however, the whiskey has largely been out of reach for Americans. This all changed in 2014 when the brand finally made its United States debut and soon enough drinkers across the country began falling head over heels for one of Irelands most beloved whiskey bottlings.

Each batch of Green Spot Irish Whiskey begins with a mash consisting of malted and unmalted Irish barley which are first fermented before being distilled three times in a single copper pot still. After this, the resulting whiskey is then left to age for 7-8 years in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry barrels before finally married, cut with pure water, and finally bottled.

On the nose, this light amber spirit imparts an inviting bouquet of ripe fruits, creamy vanilla, toffee, cereals, and oak. This is then complemented by a soft, scrumptious, and toasty palate of orchard fruits, sherried fruits, apricot, citrus, coconut, malt, mint, and new oak before wrapping up with a long and silky finish of vanilla and spice.
