Vodka is distilled beverage prepared using ethanol and water, but it sometimes contains traces of flavorings and impurities as well. The distillation of fermented cereal grains and sometimes potatoes helps make vodka, but some brands have started using other substances such as sugar or fruits. It is never easy to maintain a low-carb diet because you cannot always identify how many carbs are there in certain food items. There is already a debate going on about carbs present in alcohol. What Does Plain Vodka Taste Like

Most vodka is usually made by fermenting grain and then distilling it multiple times. Any grain can be used for this task, although other sources, such as potatoes and grapes, have been equally effective at producing profitable vodkas.

While some people find the taste more satisfactory than others, most people would agree that hard alcohol , a category which includes vodka, does not taste pleasant and anything more than a shot should be masked with other drinks – chasers.

Professional opinions can range from the simple vodka tastes like gasoline to the complex clean, milky notes with a hint of sugar, depending on the vocabulary and seriousness of the taster.

Most pundits in the USA will say that its taste is difficult to pinpoint, but that may be because they are unfamiliar with international cuisine. Vodka tastes like something which will be known to you if youve ever been to a traditional Korean restaurant – barley tea.

It mainly tastes like water soaked in barley with some spices added. In the background, you will also detect an oily and slightly sweet flavor.

Does Flavored Vodka Have More Calories

Flavor-infused vodkas can make for a more delicious experience and may also eliminate the need for high-calorie mixers like cranberry or orange juice. Nowadays, you can find vodka infused with the natural or artificial flavor of just about anything.

Lemon, berry, coconut, watermelon, cucumber, vanilla, and cinnamon are popular options. There are also more exotic infusions including: bacon, whipped cream, ginger, mango, and even smoked salmon.

The best part is that most of the infused versions dont contain any extra calories other than plain vodka!

Be careful not to confuse flavor-infused vodka with vodka drinks made with flavored sugary syrups that are added after the fermentation and distilling process. These products often contain many more calories than an infused vodka.

Always read the labels carefully. If you cant find nutrition information on the product label, try searching the manufacturers website.

What Goes Well With Vodka Sauce

Vodka sauce is such a versatile pasta sauce. Its great on so many different dishes, but it can be hard to know which ones are best.

Here are some great suggestions to make your next meal an absolute success. Youll never wonder what to serve with vodka sauce again.

Pasta: a good vodka sauce is a perfect complement to pasta. Any shape or size will work, as long its cooked perfectly al dente.

Meat: a hearty meal of pasta and meat is great for cold nights in front of the fire with your favorite person. Try some ground beef mixed into spaghetti noodles to get that delicious flavor.

Garlic breadsticks: nothing beats the perfect garlic breadstick and vodka sauce. Try some oven-baked french loaf slices for an easy, delicious side dish that will go with any meal.

Sausage: we love sausage with vodka sauce. A nice link or two is great in any shape, but this combo tastes best when its spicy Italian-style sausages on top of penne noodles.

Now The Many Flavors Of Vodka The Flavorless Spirit

  • Read in app

IN the United States, where a choice of flavors seems to be a culinary birthright, everything from bottled water to olive oil to bagels now comes in an array of flavors. Vodka is no exception.

These days, drinkers are no longer content to mix plain vodka with orange or tomato juice. Increasingly, they are buying flavored vodkas to sip straight, on the rocks or in mixed drinks. As the demand takes off, the number of flavors has risen, too. More than a dozen flavored vodkas are now on the market.

Michel Roux, who put the Swedish vodka Absolut on the map and is the importer and distributor of Stolichnaya from Russia, predicted that the market for flavored vodkas in the United States, now about 5 to 7 percent of vodka consumed in this country, would more than double in the next two years.

“The whole thing is wide open now,” he said. “You may see more flavors introduced.”

Sales of Absolut’s unflavored vodka have increased more than 200 percent in the past 10 years. Absolut Citron, one of the brand’s three flavored vodkas, was one of the top five imported vodkas sold in this country in 1993. These successes have helped drive the rest of the market to follow suit, especially in the introduction of many new flavors over the past year.

“The key to good vodka is excellent ingredients and technology,” he said. “The quality of the water, the grain and how well the product is distilled and filtered make the difference.”

How To Make Fruit Vodkas

Three Olives Dude Vodka Mountain Dew Flavored Vodka is a Hot New Bomb

Its no pretty jar of jam or row of canned tomatoes, I know, but I suspect that making your own fruit-flavored vodkas might just be the most fun way to preserve the season! This is also perfect for when youre not in the mood for a big preserving project, but want a quick way to make sure that handful of juicy berries, plump purple figs, or last peaches doesnt go to waste. Because a bottle of jewel-colored, summer fruit-infused vodka will never go to waste. Trust me on this.

I had always thought of fruit-infused vodkas as a Big Project requiring specially sourced liquor and months of waiting. In fact, it barely requires a tutorial like this one! Its as simple as choosing some ripe fruits, covering them with vodka, and waiting for a few days until the vodka tastes good to you. Once strained, this vodka can go into cocktails or pitcher drinks, or you can gift it to lucky friends in the months ahead.

I love single-fruit vodkas youre guaranteed to love the end result, and they tend to be the most versatile for crafting cocktails. But heck, you can get as fancy and crafty as you like! Combine fruits together, add spices or fresh herbs, and let out your inner mad scientist. You can also start with a single fruit, taste it, and then add another fruit or other spices. High-proof vodka will never go bad, so you can continue layering on more flavors until youre happy. If you can imagine it, you can make it.

The marionberry, a delicious relative of the blackberry, was invented in Oregon. This is a great option for cocktails like slushies and frozen swizzles.

We are talking about the Zubrowka brand here, which is the only Polish vodka that is flavored Bison Grass, a plant that is grown only on Polish plains. Distilled and filtrated multiple times, this vodka is produced in the Polmos Bialystok Distillery.

The aroma is grassy, vanilla-like and creamy. When it touches the tongue, it gives a moderate alcohol burn and a hint of coconut. The rye component releases a spicy tinge that helps cut through the grass flavor. It also adds contrast in a way that other grains cant.

How Many Calories Are In A Shot Of Vodka

Where Does Flavored Vodka Go From Here?

Vodka is considered a lower-calorie libation compared to wine or beer. The more concentrated your vodka is , the more calories it contains. The proof is a number that refers to the percent of alcohol in the liquor.

You can figure out the percent by dividing the proof in half. For example, 100 proof is 50 percent alcohol, while 80 proof is 40 percent alcohol.

The higher the proof, the higher the calorie count . For a 1.5-ounce shot of vodka, the number of calories are as follows:

  • 70 proof vodka: 85 calories
  • 80 proof vodka: 96 calories
  • 90 proof vodka: 110 calories
  • 100 proof vodka: 124 calories

Alcohol is not a carbohydrate. The calories in vodka come only from the alcohol itself. Pure alcohol contains roughly 7 calories per gram. For reference, carbohydrates and protein both contain about 4 calories per gram, while fat contains about 9 calories per gram.

This means that alcohol is nearly twice as fattening as carbohydrates or protein and only slightly less fattening than fat.

The calorie content is generally the same between different brands of vodka that are that same proof. Kettle One, Smirnoff, Grey Goose, Skyy, and Absolut vodka, for example, are all 80 proof vodkas and each contain 96 calories per 1.5-ounce shot, or 69 calories per ounce.

What Is Vodka Sauce

Vodka sauce is a tomato-based sauce that is typically served over pasta. The alcohol content in the vodka evaporates when cooked, so it doesnt affect the flavor of the dish and does not make it taste like alcohol.

Its unclear when vodka sauce was first invented. It is rumored that it originated in Palermo, Sicily, and became popular after Italian immigrants brought the dish to America during Prohibition as an easy substitute for wine which could not be imported from Italy at this time due to their country being a part of World War II .

Vodka sauces vary depending on who makes them but they all typically have tomato paste or puree added to some degree along with heavy cream/whipping creams.

Other common ingredients include garlic, salt, pepper, basil leaves, or fresh parsley.

What Alcohol To Use

You can use either 80-proof or 100-proof vodka to make fruit-flavored vodkas. 80-proof is easier to find in stores, and I prefer it in cocktails. 100-proof vodka will extract better fruit flavor, but I find that it can tend to taste a little hot or raw in cocktails. I like using 100-proof if Im planning to add simple syrup to make the vodka into a liqueur . You can also cut the 100-proof with a little water to taste.

You dont need to get fancy with the vodka either. The fruit becomes the dominant flavor, so I recommend skipping the fancy artisan vodkas and picking up something basic. I used Seagrams Extra-Smooth 80-Proof Vodka for this tutorial.

Vodka isnt the only liquor you can use, either! I love the idea of infusing other spirits with fruit what about a fig-infused bourbon? Or a grapefruit gin? Or a strawberry tequila for making daiquiris? This is a DIY rabbit hole: Embrace it.
