A Pocket Full Of Rye Nice Start For My Rye Whisky Experiences

Jim Beam Rye was my first rye whiskey ever. I have to admit, there was some suspense in the air while opening the bottle. Like opening Agatha Christies book. And I have to say: A Pocket Full of Rye is what I got.

Jim Beam has really captured rye in their bottle very well. I hadnt tasted rye whisky before so you might be wondering how I know what rye is about.

Rye happens to be very popular in Finnish culture. Rye bread is something we yearn for, when traveling abroad. Believe it or not, malted rye is even our national dish, an holiday treat for some Finns during Easter.

Jim Beam Rye is otherwise light but strong in the taste. A good start for my first rye whisky tasting. I believe Im gonna like rye whiskys very much, when I get a chance to taste some of the top players. This Jim Beam is surely a pound for the buck dram.

Nose: Nose is light. Mellow waxy honey with fruits. Little bit of ginger/stingy vanilla.

Taste: Rye is strong, feels like Finnish rye bread covered with spices! Hints of bitter and sweet notes as well: wood and vanilla.

Finish: Quick and spicy. Fast breeze of barbecue spice and pepper on the way down.

Balance: Light and mellow aromas and finish but strong on the taste. Rye dominates in the mouth.

Jim Beam Rye got 89 points from Whisky Bibles Jim Murray.

Jim Beam Black Label Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

This was an eight year old Jim Beam straight Bourbon, and available as a six year old in some regions but Jim Beam decided to drop the age-statement completely in 2015. The bottle also uses the term Triple Aged which surprisingly does not mean the spirit has been aged in three different barrels. Instead, Jim Beam have chosen a complicated way to communicate that the whiskey has been aged three times as much as the requirements for straight Bourbons. Could they have said it better? Probably, but the lack of specified guidelines in America, unlike Scotland could be to blame for that one.

Now about the whiskey itself this is a smooth, more refined Jim Beam straight Bourbon, and has gone down quite well with long-time Beam lovers. Even the slightly higher ABV at 43% works because of how mellow this expression really is. There is spice and vanilla on the nose right off the bat, and you get caramel sweetness on the palate with a soft citrus influence. Very smooth, and an excellent sipping whiskey for people that truly love Jim Beam. For others, this isnt too bad to mix into a cocktail, or be enjoyed with a splash of water.

The Return Of A Legend

Pre-Prohibition-style rye whiskey. Bartenders have been dying to get their hands on it for years. Now its back and bolder than ever. Jim Beam Devils Cut Whiskey

Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey 750ML

This is an interesting expression from Jim Beam, and although it did have the appearances of a fancy gimmick when it first came out, the result was surprisingly not as bad as presumed. The Jim Beam Devils Cut is a blend of the companys six year old whiskey, married with spirit extracted from the Oak barrels that have absorbed spirit over the years. The influence of the Oak in this whiskey is truly admirable.

Jim Beam refer to the Devils Cut as a premium Bourbon, perhaps they mean from the Jim Beam stable itself. The whiskey is quite complex by comparison, and the flavours have definitely been honed by the contact with wood for years. Devils Cut is an amusing play on the Angels Share legend, wherein the evaporated spirit during maturation is referred to as the angels taking what they are owed. The Jim Beam Devils Cut has a lot going for it, with sweet vanilla, Oak and spice playing pivotal roles. There is caramel, charred smoke and cinnamon to play the supporting roles. Good stuff, and should not be avoided if you have the chance to try it.

The Whiskey:

This is a classic bourbon that became part of Jim Beam about 30-odd years ago. Until then, it was famed for being the drink of choice of President Grant back in the 1870s, which gave it a lot to hang its hat on, as a brand. The juice in the bottle is a year younger than a typical Jim Beam bourbon but still holds up to any other bottle in this price range.

Tasting Notes:

Theres a bit of sweetness on the opening thats very reminiscent of Beam while leaning into caramel and vanilla. An undercurrent of popcorn draws the sweetness back. The body of the sip is hot and not for the faint of heart while touching on caramel apples, more popcorn, and plenty of that vanilla.

The end is shortish, hot, and has a slight salted and buttered popcorn flourish.

Bottom Line:

The nickname for this bourbon is rotgut. Need we say more?

Jim Beam Bonded Whiskey

Jim Beam Bonded is another trip to the vaults of history by the Kentucky based distillery, and this time they are following the letter of the law stated in the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897. This Act stated that a whiskey must be aged for four years, bottled at a 100 Proof , and distilled at a single distillery within a single distillation season. Jim Beam adhere to all the stipulated rules from the Act to pay an homage to the old ways and the old days.

This expression carries no-age-statement, even though the company states they have lived up to the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897. The Jim Beam Bonded has been matured in new American Oak barrels, charred to a crisp. It has a characteristic sweet and spicy balance, and not to forget a wonderful full-bodied personality. There is vanilla, salted caramel and lots of Oak to complete an overall pleasant drinking experience. Jim Beam have placed Bonded on a slightly more premium segment, above most of their regular brands.

Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey

Another reliable release from Jim Beam, which according to the company, has been distilled in a pre-Prohibition style. As most Rye whiskeys, this one isnt afraid to make its presence known on your taste buds. Rye whiskeys have notoriously been considered as a whiskey thatis not for everyone, and the Jim Beam Rye falls comfortably under that description. For the ones who love it, there could be nothing better but for the ones that dont like it, they might never really develop an affinity for it.

So is the Jim Beam Rye any good? Definitely. It brings to the fore everything that people love about Rye whiskey, and has been known to really elevate a whiskey cocktail. Quite spicy, as one might expect, and there is that caramelized Oak, some hints of vanilla and leather. Its not the smoothest Rye whiskeys out there, but it is definitely not one of the bad ones. Famously scored an impressive 92 points at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge in 2015.

A Smoky Mule: Jim Beam And Ginger Beer With A Twist

Ginger beer is a classic mixer, one that will pretty much go with anything! But that doesnt mean we should shy away from experimenting, which is why weve channeled those classic smoky barbecue flavors that Jim Beam bourbon complements so well, into a mixed drink with a surprising garnishcandied bacon!

First of all, youll need to make some candied bacon in advance, but dont worry, its also an amazing burger fixing! To do this, cook the bacon at 375 degrees for around 15 minutes, coating generously with brown sugar and liquid smoke.

Once the bacon has cooled, assemble your mixed drink by placing a slice or two inside a cocktail glass with crushed ice, and steeping 1 part Jim Beam bourbon alongside it, leaving it to integrate for 10 minutes. Then add 3 parts ginger beer, a squeeze of fresh lime, and stir lightly.

The Makers Mark Process

Jim Beam Rye Whiskey

Makers describes their aging process on their website, saying, Makers tells us when its ready, and not the other way around. Unlike most distillers, Makers Mark isnt satisfied simply setting a clock. Thats why we age to taste, not time. It usually takes between six to seven years for the whisky to be ready. Lets take a closer look at the nuts and bolts of this process, though its very interesting!

The Makers Mark bottle has a short, informative bio on the label and says that the tasting profile which Bill Samuels Senior wanted to create was soft, creamy, and full-bodied.

As I said earlier, Samuels Senior attained that tasting profile by using different wheat than his family had. He relied on red winter wheat in his mash bill rather than the popular choice of distillers rye. Samuels Senior noticed that rye could make the whiskey spicy and sharp, two things that he was trying to avoid for this bourbon.

So much of this bourbon has to do with the rich family history, and the yeast is no different. Every single Makers Mark begins with the same yeast strain thats an impressive 150 years old. This maintains a level of consistency in the product, and lets face it: its just plain cool!

Makers Mark is fortunate to have a limestone watershed right at the distillery. Therefore, all the water they use for the bourbons is filtered naturally through limestone in the distillerys own personal watershed. Pretty cool!

Jim Beam Straight Rye Whiskey Review

Jim Beam Rye

If youre an old timey, back in the day Rye drinker, you probably know all about Jim Beam Straight Rye already. The Straight Rye with the yellow label is one of two whiskeys that were what you meant when you said Ill have a Rye.

Beam or Overholt?

You preferred one to the other, but would settle for either. You were, after all, a Rye drinker in the days when respectable whiskey was Single Malt Scotch or Bourbon. Ask for Rye, and you were Ray Milland in The Lost Weekend.

But you knew an average Rye was superior to an above-average Bourbon, and also that although the cost was nearly a third less than a low-end Single Malt Scotch, the quality was two-thirds better than anything bottom shelf. You also knew that the early Scotch-Irish immigrants to Western Pennsylvania chose rye to reproduce their beloved juice of the barley in their new digs. If you drank Rye, you toasted a long tradition.

I preferred Old Overholt, but always kept a bottle of Jim Beam Straight Rye at hand. With the arrival of Wild Turkey 101 Straight Rye, and more recently the ever-expanding variety of craft Ryes, Ive spent less time with Old Overholt, and almost none with Jim Beam Straight Rye. After returning to Old Overholt for a taste, I was prepared for a less than superlative experience when I cracked open the bottle of Jim Beam Straight Rye that was lingering in my pantry.

What To Mix With Jim Beam

Few brand names have the longevity, global appeal, and timeless quality of Jim Beam. Having been one of the leaders in not only bourbon, but the spirit market as a whole, for nearly a century now, Jim Beam has seen remarkable growth and development, but one thing has remained unchangedthe quality of the bourbon.

This is perhaps down to the fact that the mash bill and flavor profile has remained pretty much unchanged since the days when Jim Beam was just a fledgling family business! Which in a way, it still is, despite having been acquired by drinks giant Suntory, Jim Beam remains a family-run and helmed distillery, having been passed down over seven generations.

With its subtle notes of vanilla and caramel, and piney forest spicing from the charred oak, you know exactly what youre getting with Jim Beam bourbon.

The Signature: Jim Beam And Coke

Jim Beam Rye Whiskey Review #417

A good mixed drink should speak for itself, with a simple and effective flavor pairing that works so well youd think they were made deliberately for each other. Which explains why Jim Beam and Coke is one of the most popular mixed drinks in the world!

With those sweet and spicy oak notes paring so well with the unique and unbeatable coke taste.

There is, of course, the temptation to spice things up and weve certainly got some more adventurous pairings coming up, but when it comes to this mixed drink, the less you do the better, which is why we think Jim Beam is an amazing mixer with Coke.

Its flavor profile is reliable and delicious and will deliver a reassuringly familiar drinking experience.

To make a Jim Beam and Coke, fill a highball glass with ice, pour in 1 part Jim Beam Bourbon to 2 parts Coke, and add a lemon wedge either on the side or in the drink itself for a citrus garnish.
