Black Maple Hill Oregon Bourbon

Black Maple Hill United States Oregon Spirits Between $75

Black Maple Hill Oregon Straight Bourbon #296

United States$75 – $100Black Maple HillOregon

Aged for an average of eight years and then bottled in small batches. Smooth but with heat and butterscotch and oak flavors. Surprisingly mellow finish given the high proof. Small quantities produced each year.

Incredibly balanced with notes of vanilla, fruit, spice, and caramel hitting all the right notes on the palate. A touch of charred oak binds these flavors together, resulting in a rich and full bodied spirit.

Where Is Black Maple Hill From

Black Maple Hill is a small town located in the state of Vermont. The town is situated in the northeastern part of the state, near the border of New Hampshire. Black Maple Hill is known for its scenic beauty, and its small-town charm. The town is home to a variety of businesses, including a grocery store, a bakery, and a number of small shops. Black Maple Hill is also home to a number of schools, including a elementary school, a middle school, and a high school.

Its not a distillery rather, its a independent label created by a California wine and spirits distributor called CVI Brands in 2000. It was bottled by third-party businesses who did not produce the whiskey or label it correctly. Heaven Hill whiskey was heavily involved in the brands early releases, as the brands original name suggested, due to a 1996 fire. Since the late 2000s, Black Maple Hill has added a slew of well-aged bourbons to its portfolio. Black Maple Hill, Kentuckys whiskey, disappeared from store shelves in 2010. The secondary market quickly became flooded with bottles, causing prices to skyrocket. A small Oregon craft distillery revived the brand just two years after it was relaunched.

Tasting Notes: Stein Five

Black Maple Hill Oregon Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Limited Edition 47.5% ...

Vitals: 80 proof, pricing around $50 here in Oregon.

Judging by the sediment in the bottom of this release, and all three others, Id guess it wasnt chill-filtered.

The Test: Stein Five-Year-Old Bourbon is a bit woody in the nose, with pencil shavings, savory grain, and dusty black pepper. On the palate, corn and cola dry out to a spicy, cinnamon-inflected finish leavened with a little menthol. Mild and sweet, theres not a lot of intensity to it, making me wish itd been bottled at a higher proof.

Black Maple Hill Bourbon History

Black Maple Hill bourbon is a small-batch bourbon whiskey produced by Heaven Hill Distilleries. The bourbon is made from a mash bill of 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malt. It is aged for a minimum of four years in new, charred oak barrels. Black Maple Hill bourbon was first produced in 1995. The bourbon was created by master distiller Lincoln Henderson. Henderson was previously the master distiller at Brown-Forman and worked on the development of Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey. After retirement, Henderson was approached by Heaven Hills president, Max L. Shapira, about creating a new bourbon whiskey. Shapira wanted a bourbon that was smooth, mellow, and easy to drink. Henderson agreed to create the bourbon and, after two years of development, Black Maple Hill was released. The bourbon was an immediate success and has been awarded numerous accolades, including a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and a score of 96 points from Wine Enthusiast.

Tasting Notes: Black Maple Hill Rye

Vitals: 95 proof, pricing at least $70 at retail.

The Test: Here, weve got a bigger, badder nose than the Stein rye, much more barrel-forward: more wood, more spice, less fruit and flower, with a generic cinnamon and vanilla character.

On the palate, the rye character is somewhat subdued . Theres a funny burnt, grassy, resinous taste in the mid-palate, like scorched evergreen wood or the last hit on a mediocre bowl of weed.

I thought water might even things out a bit, but instead it just seems to exacerbate the sappy, grassy flavor, adding a little cinnamon and clove. I dont love this in fact, I prefer the Stein-branded version.

Black Maple Hill Oregon Rye Whiskey Review

Black Maple Hill NAS Bourbon BLIND Whiskey Review

Black Maple Hill Oregon Rye

Black Maple Hill Rye is not a distillery, but a label owned by Paul Joseph from California. Joseph worked with Kentucky Bourbon Distillers KBD for many years. So, Black Maple Hill whiskey was originally sourced from KBD, who in turn sourced their own whiskey from somewhere else. There have been varying opinions relative to the true sources of this famous nectars made by the Black Maple Hill brand. At present, the label for the straight rye tells us it is made in Oregon: Produced for Black Maple Hill® by Stein Distillery® Joseph, Oregon.

For me, the main problem isnt where it came from so much as finding a bottle, which is what I advise everyone to focus on as a general rule. In this specific instance, Black Maple Hill Oregon Rye is not regularly available in the Midwest, and if you do find it the price point may stress your pocket book. Then again, if you are into buying rye whiskey regularly you are comfortable paying more now than you would have anticipated just five years ago.

The WhiskeyThe color is a dark brown with copper overtones. On first pour the glass gives off an assorted nose with hints of licorice, dried fruit, and almond or nutmeg all nestled in a stealthy reminiscence of oak. The vapors are not overpowering and easy on the nostrils. I took some extra time here to admire the aroma and found it a pleasurable beginning to this taste adventure.

Is Black Maple Hill Willett

There is no definitive answer to this question as the two bourbons are produced by different distilleries. Some bourbon aficionados believe that Black Maple Hill is a superior bourbon to Willett, while others believe that the two are comparable. Ultimately, the best way to determine which bourbon you prefer is to try them both for yourself.

Kentucky Derby-distilled juice is combined with ten-plus barrels of fine bourbon for the new Frank August 100 Proof Small Batch Bourbon. I had a chance to sample the juice for the first time, and from my limited experience, it was tasty. The design and intent of Frank August are modern interpretations of what Bourbon drinkers today seek. The Frank August glass bottle is stunning to behold. The sight is stunning when you top a bar with it. Whiskey is without a doubt one of the best things to drink. However, I am far more interested in the potential of this whiskey as a conversation piece than I am in any of these other factors. Is Black Maple Hill really as good as it claims to be? Im curious to find out what it is.

The New Black Maple Hill

The choice to swap craft whiskey from Oregon, of all places, for big-time Kentucky juice left a strange taste in many mouths. It doesnt help that the Oregon Black Maple Hill bottlings seem to start out at retail around $70 or more, a lot more than even the most enthusiastic consumer tends to want to pay for most craft whiskies.

Is CVI riding on its decade-old reputation as a cult favorite? It seems undeniable. Yet Joesph also seems earnest when he says he picked Stein because he thinks the quality of their products is noteworthy. And based on their portfolio of oddities like grappa, Armagnac, and fruit brandy, all delicious spirits that are totally unsellable to the average American drinker, CVI doesnt appear to be a company that shies away from a struggle.

But does it work for whiskey fans? CVI says the allocated bottlings remain hugely popular, but message board chattertells a different story: bourbon nerds seem almost unanimous in their dislike of the Oregon release. That makes sense. In my experience, the kind of consumer willing to drop four figures on a chance to own some rumored Stitzel-Weller juice is quite different than the kind of consumer excited to try some non-age statement craft whiskey made by a young producer from the West Coast.

Who Owns Black Maple Hill

Black Maple Hill is a brand of premium bourbon whiskey produced by the Knob Creek Distillery, which is owned by Beam Suntory. The brand was created in 1996 and the first bottles were released in 1998. The bourbon is made using a traditional sour mash process and is aged for a minimum of four years in new, charred oak barrels.

The current whiskey shortage has left brands and customers both devastated. People are no longer buying single bottles when they see their brand on the shelf instead, they are purchasing cases. With the introduction of Black Maple Hill Bourbon, it appears that Bourbon is becoming increasingly popular. The combination of a cult whiskey and a delicious dish yields a delicious beverage. The Black Maple Hill is a bourbon that has been blended in Kentucky and is owned by a gentleman from San Francisco. Weve run out of stock for a while, but we usually get about five cases per month. It will never last long, so make sure you load when it is available.

Enter An Oregon Craft Whiskey Distillery

Around the time the mainstream bourbon boom was gaining steam, the Stein family was finalizing preparations to open a craft distillery in Joseph, Oregon, a small agricultural community in the far northeastern part of the state. Stein Distillery was a new venture from a very old business. The Steins are grain farmers mostly wheat, but also rye and barley and theyve been living off the land since the 1890s. Tired of being at the mercy of the commodity grain market, the Steins decided to go the value-added route, and started producing vodka, cordials, and whiskey in 2009.

Today, Stein is a regional craft distillery best known for its aged whiskeys. Its standard lineup includes straight bourbon and straight rye, both in two-year-old and five-year-old expressions, as well as a blended whiskey. All of the grain is sourced from either the Stein homestead or, in the case of the corn, up the road from a cousin in Hermiston. Everythings distilled and aged onsite in full-sized barrels.

As soon as I tasted the Stein bourbons and rye, I knew Id found my source, said Joseph. The first thing that caught my attention is that they grew their own grain, so they have 100% control over the quality of their grain, and its all local Oregon grain.

We reached out to Stein to comment on their relationship with CVI, but they declined to speak with us.

A good man who lives on the San Francisco peninsula owns this Bourbon, which is made in Kentucky by blending Kentucky Bourbon with California oak. Blanton’s Kentucky Bourbon Single Barrels

The mysterious story of Black Maple Hill’s cult profile in the Bourbon community…

Black Maple Hill has a sort of notability unmatched in the Bourbon community. At first you may disagree, with names such as Pappy Van Winkle or Buffalo Trace Antique Collection springing to mind. These are whiskies that see a bourbon-crazed frenzy every autumn as devoted fans race in their droves for the rare chance to get their hands on a bottle . But what drives a level of singularity for Black Maple Hill is in fact not its ability to inspire an over-subscribed ballot or appear in a Hollywood movie but indeed it is the obscurity and anonymity it exists in.

Black Maple Hill is not a distillery, but rather an independent label first introduced in 2000 by a Californian wine and spirits distributor called CVI Brands. Their catalogue focussed mainly on Grappa and Cognac, but it also featured a number of boutique independent Scotch bottlers at the time, such as James MacArthur, Murray McDavid and the Hart Brothers. These were perhaps the catalyst for the company to seek to market its own boutique bourbon brand. The practice of contract-distilling was nothing new in the US, whereby a company would buy casks from a distillery to be marketed as their own product . Black Maple Hill however was bottled by third-party companies, who neither distilled the whiskey nor made themselves known on any of the labelling.
