One of Bens and my current favorite activities is partaking in cocktail hour on the back porch after the tiny gentleman goes to bed. The summer sun is still relatively high in the sky and the patio is dappled by its warm rays shining through the leafy trees. He cracks open a frosty IPA while I decide on a festive cocktail, and then we choose a Pandora station to relax to via our outdoor speakers. I preemptively veto anything hip hop-related while he forbids Fun. radio, of course. We usually end up somewhere between The Beatles, Eagles, and Bob Marley.

Id been enjoying gin and tonics spiked with a few pickled baby jalapenos a friend gave us but a couple weeks ago a rather serendipitous occasion occurred which has altered summer cocktail hour forever. #dramatic

Homemade Sweet Tea Vodka Recipe

Sweet tea vodka is one of my guilty pleasures. When the summer hits, and it is hot outside and I want some kind of cocktail, theres not really anything better in my book than a glass full of ice, sweet tea vodka, and fresh lemonade.

There are a lot of different brands of this available commercially, but most of them are REALLY sweet, almost syrup-like. That goes a little too far for me, so I really wanted a way to customize the level of sweet without sacrificing the tea flavor.

Turns out, homemade sweet tea vodka is just as easy as homemade sweet tea.

How To Make Homemade Sweet Tea Vodka

First gather your supplies: youll need a 750ml bottle of Vodka and cold brew iced tea bags. If you cant find cold brew ice tea bags you can use standard tea bags. I always go with Titos and Lipton, respectively, which are gluten free.

Pour the vodka into a pitcher or large mason jar then add 4 cold brew tea bags and let steep, undisturbed for 15 minutes. If youre using regular tea bags, steep until the liquid is a dark, rich amber color up to 2 hours. Dont let the vodka get too dark over-steeping can cause tea to become bitter.

Remove the bags one by one then squeeze the excess vodka out with your fingers into the jar. Dont waste a drop!

Next add simple syrup to the tea vodka. Simply combine equal parts sugar and water in a microwave safe jar or container then microwave until clear just a minute or two. You can do this several days ahead of time.

Again, go on the lighter side if youll mostly be pairing the Sweet Tea Vodka with lemonade, or a little heavier if youll be mostly pairing with water.

Thats all she wrote! Funnel the Sweet Tea Vodka back into the vodka bottle then store in the fridge so its nice and chilled when youre ready for a cool drink.
