The Story Behind Titos Vodka
Titos Vodka is a creation of Bert Beveridge. And as with most success stories, it started with some failed businesses. Its a prime example of what can happen if you seriously set your mind to something.

Tito Beveridge started out in the oil and gas business, went to Venezuela, returned to Texas to try his luck with a drilling company. From there, he moved on to round water geology and finally, get got into the mortgage business. Around that time -the early 1990s- he also began making homemade flavored Vodka for fun and to give to his family and friends. Due to that, Beveridge was known as the Vodka Guy among his friends even before Titos Handmade surfaced. But that, as well, was off to somewhat of a rough start.
When mortgage rates went up, Beveridge decided to introduce his flavored Vodka to liquor stores in the area. And, as you may have guessed, he got turned down by all of them. But not without giving Tito some advice on how he could try tackling the spirit market instead. And that was with a self-distilled, quality product.

The Man Who Started It All
Who would have thought that the genius behind Titos Vodka was once known as the mortgage guy?
The name is Bert Butler Tito Beveridge II. He was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, graduated with degrees in geophysics and geology, and had several businesses before finding a goldmine in what he used to consider as a hobby. While in the mortgage business, he started concocting habanero-flavored vodka and gave them as gifts to friends. At the time, people started calling him the vodka guy.
He never knew the moniker would become a reality until the mortgage rates soared a couple of points. In the mid-90s, he began researching the tools and ingredients needed to come up with something that would be embraced by vodka lovers.
It wasnt an easy process. He had to experiment a lot, which meant several failures before hitting the jackpot. He borrowed money from 19 credit cards to start the company in 1997. He had to sleep in couches and floors as the business began to take its form.
It was in 2001 when Titos Vodka hit it big after emerging as a winner among 72 vodkas from around the globe in the 2001 World Spirits Competition. Titos sold an estimated 63 million vodka bottles in 2017, which boosts to 88 million the following year. It is now included in the list of the fastest-growing spirits brands in the US. According to Forbes, the owner of Titos Vodka is acknowledged as one of Americas richest people with a net worth of $4.6 billion.
Titos Was Started With A Pile Of Credit Cards And Very Little Cash
Like most startups, Titos began in debt, to the tune of $90K spread out over 19 credit cards. Beveridge went all-in when he started the brand in 1997, hand-bottling vodka, screwing caps on bottles, and putting Elmers glue on paper labels. He even slept next to the still in the early days. But to say this was a sound investment is a profound understatement. Titos sales exploded more than 60 percent in 2017 and have increased approximately 20 percent annually since. And its worth billions now, with an estimated one-fourth share of the vodka market and revenues approaching $1.4 billion in 2020.

Titos Handmade Vodka: First Impressions From A Liquor Snob
Upon first glance, Titos Handmade Vodka appears to be keeping it real. Despite its supposed quality and its ever increasing reputation, the bottle is kept extremely simple and non-flashy, as is the label with its simple print and subtle logo. Despite it being churned out by the millions of bottles per year, you get the impression that not a whole lot has changed since the product was first crafted and bottled. It still has the look of a handmade craft product. The back label, in an equally non-flashy way, carries a bit of information about the philosophy behind the product and the process through which it was created. Here, too, you get the feeling that not much has changed and this, also, is a good thing.
The first test of any vodka: How does it fare neat?
Examining the content of the bottle it is as expected colorless and crystal clear. The smell, as could also be expected from an odorless spirit is almost non-existent: a trace of alcohol and a faint whiff of sweet corn. Titos, in a sense, has the look and smell that you would expect of a premium vodka, crystal clear and by no means off-putting on the nose.

How Is Vodka Made
As a relatively straightforward spirit, vodka can be distilled from virtually anything. Its mostly produced by fermenting potatoes or cereal grains like wheat or rye. The majority of plain vodkas and almost all Russian vodkas are created with wheat, while Polish vodka favours rye and Finnish vodka goes for barley. When vodka is produced using something other than potato or cereal grain, like Ciroc, which is made using grapes, it must legally be declared on the bottle.
To make vodka, the potato or grain is heated to form a mash before being mixed with yeast to produce ethanol. This fermentation process can take anything from one day to two weeks before the liquid is purified to remove any odours or off notes. Then, its distilled in column stills or pot stills to reach its desired purity.
The vodka, at 95.6 percent, is then diluted to around 50% with purified or spring water before being distilled again, at which point infusions can be added. The spirit is finished in the pot before common additives like honey or sugar are added. Before the final step, every bottle of vodka goes through a particle filter before its chilled and sold.
