If you visit Grandmas attic, youll see that vintage Bourbon is now legal to sell, and probably delicious. In a new law, licensed retailers will be able to buy vintage bottles from individuals. What Are The Best Miniatures To Sell

While we try to accept most miniature spirits in our auction there are some miniatures that are worth more than others.

Our buyers are always on the lookout for rare bottlings, limited editions, closed distilleries and historic miniatures.

Top Tips For Selling Whisky Collections

Here are some tips from experts on how to get the most out of your tipple:

  • Be patient: Wait for the right moment to buy or sell your booze.
  • Do your research: To make good revenue it’s important you understand whisky and become a bit of an expert. You have to make the right choices and know what you’re buying in the first place.
  • Where to start: Whisky Onlineand RareWhiskySite101 are among a number of websites looking to buy old and rare whiskies so make sure you take a look at them before buying or selling.People can also check more generalist whisky information websites such as scotchwhisky.com, Whisky Advocate or The Spirits Business – or subscribe to Whisky Magazine. Anne-Sophie also has her own website where she blogs about whisky: thewhiskylady.net.
  • Keep the bottle in good conditions: Make sure you keep the boxes and keep your bottles in good condition. Whisky does not need the cool, cellar-like conditions often required for wines. But it needs to be kept at a constant level at room temperature and upright avoiding contact between the cork and the tipple inside. The value can drop dramatically if there is damage to the bottle or labelling or if the fill level drops, showing poor closing and evaporation.

It’s not just rare drinks that can mean you’re quids in.

You could earn hundreds of pounds from selling old toys and games, including Monopoly and Lego.

Following the end of the auction, we will facilitate the transfer of legal ownership with the seller, the new buyer and the distillery. At this stage we ask that you are patient, as the legal transfer can take anything from 1 week to 3 months, depending on the new buyer location and the distillery processing time. Once we are satisfied that the legal transfer has completed, the auction proceeds will be transferred into your nominated account within 48 hours. During this stage we will be chasing both the buyer and distillery on your behalf to complete the legal transfer and conclude the sale as promptly as we can.

Selling Whisky Via Our Auction Coordination Service

Following the rise in the value of whisky, coupled with the need for a legal way for the public to sell whisky online, a few entrepreneurs set up specialist, online whisky auctions. They started to appear around 2010 and grew in number each year. As of 2021, there are over 20 specialist online whisky auctions and they can be a great place to sell your whisky online. The main of the specialist online auctions is to help you sell whisky online, but how do they achieve good prices when they only sell whisky online?

These auctions cater only to the sale of whisky and as such are able to be very targeted with their marketing. This had the result of opening up the whisky market to the world as the sale and purchase of rare bottles of whisky became more accessible and user friendly. The significant increase in the value of whisky from 2010 onwards can certainly be attributed, at least in part, to the rise of online auctions, but arguably their most important asset is the fact they are completely legal!

We have partnered with one of the leading online whisky auction houses to provide a service that helps our clients get their bottles to auction quickly and efficiently. Once your bottle is at auction you can watch live as bidding commences and your bottle passes to the hands of a new owner.

You Cannot Sell Whisky On Ebay Or Facebook

eBay was once a good place to sell whisky online. This changed in 2014 when eBay introduced a blanket ban on the sale of alcohol. The reasons for this were simple by allowing people without the relevant licenses to sell their whisky on eBay they were facilitating the illegal sale of alcohol and were open to litigation. In 2018 eBay allowed certain retailers to list whisky for sale once more but each retailer had to go through a rigorous screening process.

Summary: you cannot sell whisky on eBay and are liable to prosecution if caught.

Facebook then took over as the place to sell whisky online. Dozens of specialist groups soon sprung up and until July 2019 thousands of bottles were sold each month. You could list your bottle for sale with an asking price and people would contact you to complete the sale.

Summary: you cannot sell whisky on Facebook and are liable to prosecution if caught.

Selling Whisky Via An Online Retailers

Unopened Old Taylor Bourbon Whiskey

Another way to sell your whisky online legally is to sell direct it to a whisky retailer. There are dozens of retailers online and they will buy your stock to re-sell on their websites. Although retailers were once a very popular way of selling whisky online the majority are wary of buying stock at the height of the market so they are often quite coy with their offers.

Is It Legal To Sell Whiskey

Yes, it is legal to sell whiskey. Itâs also essential to follow all laws and regulations pertinent to your place of business. Just like other alcoholic beverages in the United States, whiskey can only be sold to adults that are 21 or older.

Whiskey can only be produced by a licensed manufacturer and only sold by a licensed dealer, distributor, or retailer. When selling whiskey across state lines, you must have a shipping license that corresponds to every state youâre doing business in.

Does The Fill Level Matter

Sadly miniatures can suffer from the effects of evaporation over time. A good fill level is ideal. A lower fill level will affect the value of any bottle. However experienced bidders already know what levels to expect from different bottles so a mini with a low level could still attract high bids.

We may not accept submissions if the liquid in a bottle has turned in some way. For instance if a whisky is cloudy.

The Bourbon Gray Market

How To Sell Your Whisky Online – Private Sales, Auctions, Retail Shop

A couple of months ago FiveThirtyEight posted an article about the secondary market in the sneaker industry. Now, Im no sneakerhead but the article was extremely interesting and I couldnt help but draw comparisons from what is going on in the sneaker industry to the current bourbon market. The sneaker industry releases special edition shoes to which people camp out for, riot over and in general go a little too crazy over what is, in my mind, just a shoe. Sound familiar? Nike releases special edition Air Jordans which are by far the most popular and bring the highest secondary prices. However, there are other releases like the Lebrons, Kobes and KDs that also fetch multiples on MSRP on the secondary market.

Heres how I see the bourbon secondary shifting:

Like it or hate it limited edition bourbons are sold on the secondary market on sites like Bottle-Spot, Facebook groups and Craigslist every day. The mysterious bourbon flipper is the most hated figure in bourbon today. Cant find Pappy? Blame the flipper. Store increased their prices? Blame the flipper. Distilleries increasing prices? Blame the flipper. I think of a flipper as someone that doesnt even drink bourbon and purchases solely for resale. I think this is a very small percentage of the market but increasing. Whats also increasing is the bourbon opportunist The guy that is in to bourbon but can fund a year of purchases with the sale of one bottle of Pappy.

Are Old Bottles Of Whiskey Worth Anything

A valuable object doesnt necessarily have to be old and rare. Its value depends on how much others want to pay for and how much you are able to collect. The flavor of whiskey doesnt age or change in the bottle as it does with wine. The taste and aroma of whiskey bottled decades ago have not changed much.

I Plan My Holidays Around Collecting Whisky

He said: “It’s incredible to think that sold for so much now.

“A fiver is quite pricey for a car boot sale book, but the seller insisted because it was a hardback so I said I could stretch to it.

“I took a whole box of whisky books to the charity shop a few months ago so I’m wondering if I should have done that now.”

Mr Marshall was inspired to start collecting in the 1980s by someone he worked with.

He added: “A friend from work at Kettering Crematorium who was collecting full-size bottles suggested I collect miniatures and it started from there.

“But it took on a life of its own because I started planning my holidays in Scotland around it.

“But when my mates asked why I collect whisky miniatures when I don’t even like the taste, I used to say, ‘well you buy cigarettes and at the end of the week all you have is a pile of ash, but I have my beautiful bottles to look at’.”

Will Gilding, director at Gildings Auctioneers in Market Harborough and a wine and spirits expert, said: “Brian’s incredible collection really did offer a unique opportunity for collectors, and we’re delighted to have achieved such a great result for him.

“The 35th anniversary bottling for Private Eye selling for £340 was an eye-watering result, but all of the Macallans in the auction averaged just shy of £150 per bottle.

“As well as the Springbank set, other highlights were a Clynelish 1965 vintage, 25-year-old making £192 and a Talisker 1955 vintage making £161.

Has The Coronavirus Affected Bottle Selling Prices In 2021

There were some concerns at the start of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic that we would see a drop in bottle prices. However despite some distilleries stopping production the secondary market for rare bottles seems to have continued as normal.

As of April 2021 online auctions have continued to take place, online retailer continue to buy and sell and bottle prices seem relatively steady.

Selling Whisky Via An Online Broker

Selling your whisky via a licenced whisky broker is a legal alternative to selling via an online auction. A broker helps you find a buyer for your item in this case whisky and charges you a commission on the sale price of the bottle. It is therefore in the brokers interest to get you the best possible price.

Selling whisky through an online broker gives you much more control over the sale of your whisky compared to an auction. If you dont agree with the offer price you simply keep hold of your bottle and keep looking for a buyer.

We make the process of selling your bottle really simple. You just send in a few images of your bottle standing upright. We then forward the images to our clients and send you the highest offer we receive. The offers are without obligation so if the offer is not right for you then there is no need to proceed.

If you want to proceed then we send you out a contract and you send us your bottle. We even have a subsidised and fully insured courier service that you can use where we send specialist packaging material and a pre-paid returns label. We then complete the sale with the buyer and send you the proceeds minus our commission and courier charge if you use it via BACS.

We have hundreds of five-star reviews on Google, Yell and Facebook and are really proud of the level of customer service we provide.
