As for which ones, its a mystery. Since Pappy joined a joint partnership with Buffalo Trace in 2002, the source of every bottles contents has been a point of contention among whiskey aficionados. Some claim that its impossible for Buffalo Trace to perfectly replicate the same bourbon that was produced in the Stitzel-Weller distillery and won the 1996 award.This belief is one of the reasons that people are willing to fork out far more cash for an older bottle of Pappy. After 2002, whiskey produced at the Buffalo Trace distillery was mixed with old Stitzel-Weller stock before being bottled so some Pappy 23 year as recently as 2015 may have traces of Stitzel-Weller in it.

The other day Im buying an exercise bike from a guy when I see his whiskey collection. Its a nice one, a few shelves worth. The topic of Pappy Van Winkle, that white whale bottle with an enormous price tag, comes up. I ask him if he thinks its possible to find one at a price that wouldnt make my nose bleed.
Ha. It wasnt a laugh really, just an exclamation. Not gonna happen, he says.
Technically, bottles of Pappy Van Winkle start at $130. But youd be hard-pressed to find one for less than ten times that, even at legitimate liquor stores that work directly with Buffalo Trace, Pappys parent distillery. Older expressions like the crème-de-la-crème 23-year-old, which should cost $270 can top $3,000, easy. Thats more than a months rent where youre drinking it.

Get on the List: Even the best liquor stores are limited to the allocated bottle count distributed to them. After Buffalo Trace has sent out the years allotment, there wont be new bottles until the next year. This means stores have very few bottles and lots of customers who want them. The most common solution for shops of all sizes is a raffle, so ask the cashier at your local spots if one exists and get yourself on it. Winning the raffle wont net you a free bottle, but at least you get a chance to buy it.
Look at a Map: Stores in population centers are more likely to be allocated coveted whiskey, but theyre also more likely to pull huge crowds. Stores with less visitors or in lower-populated areas are allocated less of the good stuff. This makes the edges of suburbia prime whiskey hunting territory where retailers are more likely to receive Pappy and there are fewer people fighting for each bottle.

Makers famously rotates the barrels in its warehouses to ensure consistent maturation, so to create unique flavors for its Private Select series and these limited editions, it employs an ever-increasing range of custom wood finishing staves from Kelvin Cooperage.
