What’s The Best Jack Daniels Whiskey

Jack Daniels Fun Facts

Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel vs. Gentleman Jack vs. Old No. 7

Jack Daniel himself has an interesting history he ran away from home when he was young because he didnt like his stepmother very much. His real mother died at birth and his father died during the Civil War, so she was all he had left. He ended up working on a farm, which is where he learned to make the worlds favorite whiskey.

This is only one of many interesting facts about this centuries-old company.

Jack Daniels Flavor Profile

It can be said, however, that Jack Daniels and its Tennesse Whiskey is a beverage that blends well and mixes with many different flavors. For that reason, we want to take a minute and discuss some of the best mixers for Jack Daniels, along with some of the best cocktails you can create with the whiskey.

Weve already mentioned that Jack Daniels meets the necessary requirements to be considered a bourbon, however, some argue whether or not it actually is. The whiskey is made with a mash bill which consists of 51% corn, plus rye and malted barley.

At this point, it is distilled in huge stills made of copper. Then, it is aged for at least 24-months in barrels made of American white oak. Of course, anyone familiar with Jack Daniels is well aware of what sets is apart from other whiskeys: it goes through sugar maple charcoal filtration prior to bottling. Jack Daniels uses this method to strip away some of the harsh flavoring associated with whiskey and creating a smoother and easier to drink libation.

This method is referred to as the Lincoln Country process. This is primarily why Jack Daniels is considered a Tennessee whiskey as opposed to a bourbon. When it comes to the flavors you experience when drinking Jack Daniels, youll notice vanilla, oak, butterscotch, caramel, corn, molasses, smoke, lemon, nuts, bananas, and a touch of spice.

The Whiskey:

The whiskey in the bottle is the classic Jack Daniels mash of 80 percent corn, 12 percent malted barley, and eight percent rye. The Tennessee whiskey was filtered through Jacks drip-drop sugar maple charcoal system before barreling and aging at the very top where the air is dry and warm of rickhouses number eight and number 13. The whiskey is bottled straight from the barrel with no other fussing.

Tasting Notes:

The nose on this one is soft. Theres a whiff of classic Jack Daniels dark fruit that feels very much like a deep and dark cherry cordial with a dry, woody cinnamon stick dipped inside then you licked the cherry cordial off the stick and put it under your nose. A touch of worn library leather is also lurking on the nose, with a hint of dry pecan shells and rich, almost smoked butterfat. The taste embraces the sweetness with a wet brown sugar vibe thats married to a touch of dried apple cores next to a holiday cake full of dark spices, brandied fruits, and fat nuts that are all then soaked with fiery whiskey. That butter returns as the mid-palate sweetness ebbs and turns more towards almost burnt toffee touched with a flake of salt as a soft but old leather pouch full of sticky tobacco arrives to round everything out. The last feeling you get is this slow step upwards towards an embracing warmth in your neck and chest as those ABVs finally make themselves known.

This is due to it being aged in unique Sinatra Barrels that have deep grooves carved into their staves, so that the whiskey has more exposure to the oak during maturation and can acquire more flavors than the standard Jack Daniels.

The second reason why neat is the best way to drink Sinatra Select, is because at about $175 a bottle you wont want to waste a drop on shots and cocktails.

Jack Daniels Gentleman Jack

Gentleman Jack was originally released in 1988 and was the first new expression offered by the brand in several decades. The whiskey used for this one comes from barrels in the lower levels of their aging house. The expression is inviting, approachable, and named to honor their original gentleman distiller, Jack Daniel himself.

This whiskey gets a second round of filtration through their special, handmade process. This is part of what immediately distinguishes this spirit from others in the collection its incredibly smooth, super mellow, and perfectly sippable and sophisticated.

The nose is clean and soft with gentle notes of sweet vanilla, caramel, and honey. The palate is, of course, quite mellow and pleasant with sweet notes of honey and citrus with hints of nuts, pepper, and a slight touch of oak. The finish is perhaps the smoothest youve tasted.

Winter Jack Tennessee Cider

Whatâs The Best Whiskey For Beginners?

If you’re fond of a hot toddy or apple cider, especially during the winter months, then Jack Daniel’s Winter Cider could be your new BFF. With a price point in the $20 zone, Winter Jack is based on an old Jack Daniel’s family recipe even though he was never married or had kids . Let’s move away from that somber moment.

This Christmasy feeling whiskey will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. It’s essentially just spiked apple cider liqueur that’s been blended with old reliable: Jack Daniel’s No. 7 . It’s labeled as having wintry “holiday spices” also known as “Winter Pie Spices”, according to Vitamix which usually includes cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, and clove. If you’re not a pumpkin pie spice fan, then this isn’t for you. Intoxicology says that this is a booze you’ll either love or hate, but that, more than anything, it’s like an adult version of apple cider.

Since Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Apple and Tennessee Fire are both overly sweet and reminiscent of cough syrup, then this could possibly follow suit. So if Winter Jack has a pretty good rating when it comes to taste and price, what’s it doing so low on the list? It’s a seasonal release , so you can really only enjoy it for a few months during the year. Bummer.

Their New Bonded Line Is A Standout But Can It Compete With The Legacy Of Old No7

Innovation has been a huge priority here in the past few years.

Thats a bold statement from Chris Fletcher, the Master Distiller for Jack Daniels, the largest whiskey brand in the world and a company thats pretty much known globally for its iconic square Old No. 7 Tennesse whiskey bottle.

That flagship bottle makes up roughly 95% of what Jack Daniels sells every year. Add in a few percentage points for Honey, the smoother Gentleman Jack and some other flavored products , and there doesnt seem like theres a lot of room for more experimental or artisanal expressions.

But over the past few years, Fletcher a native of the Tennessee whiskey brands home of Lynchburg, TN, and grandson of late Master Distiller Frank Frog Bobo has been quarterbacking a concerted effort to help the distillery branch out. While Jack Daniels has previously dipped its toes into the craft whiskey scene single barrel, rye, Sinatra Select the past two years have seen Jack Daniels release its first post-Prohibition age statement bottle and the unexpected Coy Hill High Proof, an extremely limited release featuring a seemingly ridiculous proof point that stretched up to 148.3.

And thats a designation that Fletcher and his team, which includes Assistant Distiller Lexie Phillips, are trying to revive. They arent just a logo on a T-shirt.

All of this brings us back to the two new bottles.

Jack Daniels Old No 7 Cocktails & Shots

The best way to drink Jack Daniels Old No. 7 is in mixed drinks, cocktails and shots. This is because its relatively cheap , sweet and very smooth, so its not too expensive for anything but drinking neat, but it is something pleasant that will go down smoothly in a shot and blend well with the other ingredients in a cocktail.

This doesnt mean that drinking Old No. 7 neat would be terrible, far from it. It does have good flavors, its just that there are not enough of them to make this an interesting daily sipper. Its certainly worth drinking neat if youre new to whiskey or to Jack Daniels or just like the flavor profile, but its lack of complexity means that for many whiskey drinkers doing so would be a bit boring, which is why the best way to drink Jack Daniels Old No. 7 is in mixed drinks, cocktails and shots.

And what kind of person would I be if I didnt offer some suggestions. Some of the best things to mix with Jack Daniels Old No. 7 are:

Mixer
1 part Jack Daniels & 3 parts soda water

Some popular whiskey cocktails that taste great with Jack Daniels Old No. 7 include:

You can also drink Old No. 7 Franks way. There was a lifelong friendship between Frank Sinatra and Jack Daniels and as they say, wherever Frank went Jack was nearby. Unsurprisingly or should I say, appropriately, he also had his way of drinking Jack Daniels now known as the 3-2-1 Frank, which is sipping it with 3 ice cubes, 2 fingers of Jack Daniels and 1 splash of water.

Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select Neat / Cocktails

Jack Daniel

There are two ways to drink Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select and that is both neat and in a cocktail.

Its great to drink neat because despite being a single barrel version of Old No. 7, its a big step up from it flavor wise. This is because all versions of this whiskey come from barrels stored in the uppermost part of the Jack Daniels warehouse, where increased changes in temperature cause the whiskeys color to deepen and its flavors to become more intense.

Having said that, with a higher ABV than many of the other Jack Daniels expressions you may find that you prefer adding a little water or ice as that can release more of the whiskeys sweetness.

Additionally, since the Single Barrel Select is on the one hand better than the Old No. 7 but on the other hand not too complex or expensive, its also a great higher-quality whiskey for a higher-quality cocktail.

Whiskey Review: Jack Daniels Bonded Tennessee Whiskey

People might be surprised when I tell them that Jack Daniels is my one of my go-to whiskeys when Im ordering at bars. Sure, I could spend a few minutes pouring over the whiskey selection and weighing the pros and cons of each spirit, but when Im out for a night I know two things about Jack: it will always be there, and it will always be consistent. But I cant say I often stock Jack Daniels at home, nor is it something I reach for when I want a higher caliber whiskey. That may change, though, based on the bottle were looking at today: Jack Daniels Bonded Tennessee Whiskey.

Single Barrel Heritage Barrel

According to Jack Daniel’s, its Single Barrel Heritage Barrel is aged in a low-and-slow toasted cask for optimal flavor and rich color. This process yields a high-proof, satiny product with lots of warm, woody, and spicy notes laced with a luxe touch of vanilla. It’s truly a premium blend, made for slow sipping on a sun-dappled summer’s day. Although you could mix this whiskey with some soda water or ice-cold ginger ale, it shines best when left to its own delicious devices.

Instead of reaching for the mixers, get yourself a rocks glass, a handful of chilled whiskey rocks, and a generous pour of the good stuff. The whiskey rocks will keep your drink nice and cold without adding any extra water. Although all of Jack Daniel’s single barrel offerings are top-notch, the Single Barrel Heritage Barrel is in a cask and class, all of its own.

Jack Daniels Unaged Tennessee Rye Whiskey

Average Price:$52

The Whiskey:

Jack Daniels Rye whiskeys are pretty killer and this bottle gives you a chance to see how it all starts. The rye is the unaged distillate made from 70 percent rye, 18 percent corn, and 12 percent malted barley. That hot juice is charcoal filtered per Tennessee whiskey specifications. Its then cut with the famous Jack Daniels cave water and bottled.

Tasting Notes:

The nose is malty and full of wet grains, pancake syrup, and ripe green peppers with a hint of savory fruit and tart cherry. The palate is lush with a hint of savory green herbs next to those tart cherries, more pancake syrup, and a dash of dried chili pepper flakes. A floral element comes in late as the water kicks in and fades out the sip pretty quickly toward a neutral end.

Bottom Line:

If youre looking for a more flavorful vodka to mix with, then this is for you. Besides expanding your palate by knowing what white dog rye tastes like, theres little other value here .

If you’re looking to experience the depth, intense, and rich flavor of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel 100 Proof Bottled in Bond , then look no further … than your local airport, because sorry kids. That’s the only place you can find it. .

It’s rare, it’s complex, it’s around $100 dollars, and it’s pretty much flammable . Its availability is confirmed, though one reviewer on Distiller, who was gifted the bottle by a friend who picked it up in at a Duty-Free in London. When someone says “I will cherish the hell out of this bottle,” it must be good, right? Not always. Some say it’s overly sweet, which can make it go down easy or not at all. “I couldn’t be bothered drinking the rest…the kitchen sink took one for the team.” Yikes.

While it still has the signature oakey, banana, and maple syrup aroma, one Vision Viral contributor pointed out that it has an almost buttery-like finish with a hint of Hostess Cherry Pie. Not quite sure about comparing whiskey to 50 cent gas station snacks.
