Top Tip #8 Have A Positive Attitude

Lessons 1 7 have meant that my attitude to alcohol has completely changed. I no longer need it and most of the time, no longer want it either. The short term fun’ it brings is negligible in comparison to the drawbacks.

I enjoy feeling fit, I enjoy wearing nice slim fitting clothes and I enjoy getting so much more done with my day than I used to. Because of all of that, alcohol just isn’t the crutch it used to be for me.

Don’t get me wrong, I still like beer. I don’t think that will ever go. And there are time’s when I do want one. Because of that, I won’t give up alcohol forever. I will however severely moderate my consumption of it and limit it to just once or twice a month when I can really savour it and enjoy the social occasion that it comes with.

Many people who have trouble moderating their eating or drinking may often beat themselves up. Clay describes his feelings of self-hatred for his once uncontrolled eating and drinking. But as Bitten Jonsson a registered nurse who specializes in sugar addiction states: the inability to quell cravings and moderate ones consumption whether of high-carb foods or alcohol has less to do with willpower and more to do with the altered biochemistry of the brain.

The brain chemistry that drives the addict to seek pleasure beyond the point of satiety is similar, whether the user favors Jack Daniels or Jack-in-the-Box, says Dr. Vera Tarman, author of Food Junkies, a book that Jonsson recommends for all sugar addicts.

Dr. Robert Lustig agrees, noting that neuroscience and addiction research shows that the brains dopamine pathway is the same whether it is sugar, alcohol, nicotine, cocainewhatever.10All hedonic substances and all hedonic behaviors work through the same dopamine pathway, says Lustig, the best-selling author, anti-sugar advocate and pediatric endocrinologist.

When you are addicted to one substance and find yourself abstaining, your dopamines modus operandi is to find a substitute trigger, says Lustig.

The takeaway: if you are doing a low-carb or keto diet to help deal with a disordered or addictive relationship to carbs or sugar, addiction transfer to alcohol may occur. Our experts recommend abstaining.

Your Immune System May Weaken If You Drink Vodka Every Night In Excess

Have you noticed that ever since you started drinking vodka every night that you’ve been more likely to get sick during cold and flu season? Did you used to never get sick, but now you can’t seem to avoid it? If so, it’s possible that your daily vodka intake is responsible for you getting under the weather, according to the Cleveland Clinic. That’s because alcohol can have a negative impact on your immune system, rendering you more vulnerable to the flu, colds, and other infections.

The physical and mental effects of alcohol can also contribute to weight gain. When you drink, your ability to make decisions is impaired, and that includes making healthy food choices. After a couple of drinks, it gets harder to pass on the plate of French fries or order the salad instead of the cheeseburger. And you’ve probably noticed that you get the munchies after a night of drinking, even if you ate a full dinner.

If you go overboard, you risk a hangover and the fatigue, headache and other characteristic symptoms. Fatigue is also a trigger for poor food choices and giving into cravings. Eating a greasy breakfast to cure a hangover is a myth, but many people do it anyway and end up consuming hundreds of extra calories. Then, after dragging yourself through the day, you’re going to feel a lot more like hitting the couch than hitting the gym.

The calories and physical and mental effects of alcohol mean that vodka and weight gain often go hand in hand. When you do indulge, do it moderately with no more than one drink if you’re a woman and two drinks if you’re a man, per recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Also, choose low-calorie mixers, such as soda water, and plan ahead to avoid binging on bar foods.

Pay attention to serving size. When you drink, know your alcohol-serving size. A glass of wine is not a glass filled to the brim, but 5 oz .

Nix the mix. Minimize the calories from mixers. Make margaritas with real lime juice, use diet tonic water, or even naturally calorie-free club soda instead of regular tonic water and other high-calorie carbonated drinks. (These low-sugar margaritas will satisfy your craving while minimizing your sugar consumption.

Think ahead. If you’re aggressively pursuing a weight loss goal, consider your schedule before popping open a post-work bottle of wine. Although it’s essential to treat yo-self, you might want to save that glass for, say, your BFF’s birthday dinner on Saturday night. This can help reduce drinks’ impact on your overall fat burning.

Get to know calorie counts. This does not mean you need to start calorie-counting But having an idea of the lowest calorie alcohol options can help you make smart choices before you sip and, in turn, keep to your weight-loss goal. Here, a few types of alcohol with the least calories per serving, according to the National Institutes of Health .

How Does Alcohol Affect Your Weight

Alcohol is associated with changes in your weight, but the reasons why can be complex. Alcohol can disrupt a number of systems and functions in your body that can, directly and indirectly, influence your weight. One of the most obvious ways alcohol can change your weight is through increased calorie intake. People that drink beer excessively, which is high in calories, may gain weight. Alcohol may also encourage people to eat greasy, fatty foods in response to fluctuating blood sugar levels.

If youve tried any popular diets of the last several years, you may have seen that many nutritionists encourage you to avoid alcohol if youre trying to lose weight. Even if you drink relatively low-calorie options, alcohol can also prevent weight loss. Alcohol cant be stored by the body, so when you drink, your body gets to work to get rid of it as soon as possible.

Alcohol has calories in it, so your body burns it as a fuel source quickly and prioritizes it over other food sources it can store. That means, when you drink an alcoholic beverage, your body uses, processes, and eliminates it before using any fats or sugars you consume in the drink or alongside it. Everything else is stored as fat.

College students and young adults that experienced the dreaded freshman 15 may not be surprised to learn that drinking can contribute to weight gain. However, alcohol can also make you lose weight in an unhealthy way.

One study found that moderate alcohol consumption decreased weight gain in middle-aged and elderly women. The reasons are not fully understood, but it was noted that the women reduced calories from other sources when they drank.

On the other hand, alcohol addiction can also lead to weight loss, but not in a positive way:

  • Heavy alcohol consumption can suppress appetite, while binge drinking can also lead to vomiting.
  • Due to loss of zinc through excessive urination, a persons sense of taste and smell can be dulled, also suppressing appetite.
  • Those with severe alcohol use disorder can become malnourished, due to getting most of their calories from alcoholic beverages. Alcohol lacks nutritional benefits, and blocks the absorption of nutrients from food.

How To Drink Alcohol and Lose Weight | THE TRUTH
    • Post author

Your body treats alcohol like a poison. It shuts down all your other metabolic pathways to focus on metabolizing the alcohol. Alcohol will shut down fat burning for 12 to 36 hours depending on the dose and the individual. That is why we like patients to only drink the day before and the day of their cheat day. Since we encourage most patients to make their cheat day Saturday, this means Friday night and Saturday drinking. We are not trying to burn fat on our cheat day so alcohol consumption on those nights will not slow down your results. Drinking alcohol on non cheat days will slow down your fat loss. If you choose to drink alcohol outside of your cheat day, adjust your weight loss expectations and own it.

Not every week is going to be a great week and if you needed a drink to get through that day so be it, just get back on the plan on Monday. Long term there is really no reason to drink during the week / non cheat days although it is very easy to fall into that pattern. I would drink beer everyday if there were no negative consequences but I did not like being overweight and dibeitic so I stopped. Now I drink 2 or 5 times a month socially on cheat days. There is nothing wrong with responsible alcohol consumption, it can be great stress relief but it can slow your fat loss down if you are not strategic about it.

    Thank you
