Malibus Rum Is Molasses
Malibu is distilled from molasses, a sugarcane refinement byproduct. Theres plenty of cool stuff to know about rum production, but key here is knowing that rum can be made from either sugarcane juice or molasses syrup, the latter a byproduct of sugarcane refinement and sugar production. Theres also the harder-to-produce, more agricultural, and delicate rhum agricole, comprising an admittedly smaller fraction of the market. As a molasses-based rum, Malibus is pretty standard.
How Is Rum Made
The current legal definition in the United States is as follows:
Rum is an alcoholic distillate from the fermented juice of sugar cane, sugar cane syrup, sugar cane molasses, or other sugar cane by-products, produced at less than 190 proof in such manner that the distillate possesses the taste, aroma, and characteristics generally attributed to rum, and bottled at not less than 80 proof and also includes mixtures solely of such distillates.
Rum is made much like other spirits. The most important step, though, is harvesting the sugar properly. Williams suggests, To get the best results, the cane should be cut close to the ground It must then be milled very quickly after harvesting, while the sugar content is high. And then it must be boiled, rendered down quickly once the juice, the vesous, is squeezed out, because otherwise it will rapidly ferment.
Although there is no world standard for the distillation process, pot stills are the preferred method for rums with fuller taste.

Does Rum Go Bad
Do you have a bottle of rum thats sitting in the cabinet for years and youre not quite sure what to do with it? Or maybe youve opened a bottle of rum a few months ago and wonder if its still safe to drink. Both situations lead us to the question: does rum go bad?
Rum is one of the distilled spirits. Its a stable alcohol, and that means it can be stored for years and still stay fine. So no matter if its a bottle thats sitting there for years waiting to be enjoyed, or one opened and waiting to be finished, the rum will likely be perfectly fine.
If you would like to learn more about storage, shelf life and if rum can actually go bad, read on.

How Long Does Rum Last
Basically, the shelf life of rum indefinite. That means your bottle of Bacardi or Captain Morgan is perfectly safe sitting in that cabinet. As long as its unopened and the seal isnt compromised in any way, the rum should be as good twenty years from now as it is today.
After opening the bottle the shelf life of rum stays indefinite, but it slowly deteriorates.
Thats why most people recommend drinking liquors within a couple of months after opening the faster, the better. The longer it stays open, the worse its taste will be. Of course, as already mentioned, it will take probably at least a few years to even tell the difference in taste.
An important thing to note is that all of the above applies to pure rum. There are some rum-based products on the market like Malibu rum, which is a coconut rum, that dont last that long.
If your bottle isnt about 80 proof , its most likely a liqueur based on rum and in most cases, it will taste great only within a few months of opening. A good example of that is RumChata, that retains best flavor for up to a year.
One quick reminder base liquors no longer age once theyre bottled. The same applies to rum. As Ive mentioned earlier, rum in an unopened bottle should basically taste the same today and 20 years from now.
Dont fall under the wrong impression that keeping a bottle of rum for years will make the rums taste better. It wont.
|Stays fine indefinitely|
How To Store Rum
You should store rum the same way your store other spirits, such as whiskey. That means it should be kept in a place thats cool and dry. Thats it.
Once the bottle is opened, you need to remember to keep it tightly closed when not in use.
Dont even consider storing a bottle of rum with a pourer on. Why not, you ask? When a bottle of liquor isnt tightly sealed, the liquid slowly evaporates. And since alcohol evaporates faster than water, the rum gradually becomes milder.
Also, the process of oxidation takes place. Those two processes combined slowly change the taste of the liquor.
When the bottle is tightly sealed, those processes also occur, but it all happens at a snails pace. That means that unless youre a rum connoisseur, you wont be able to notice those effects for years to come.
Heres one trick for storing an opened bottle of rum. If the bottle is half empty, consider pouring the alcohol into a smaller one and sealing it tightly.
The more liquid in the bottle, the less oxygen in there and the slower the deterioration processes. Of course, that only makes sense if you plan on keeping that rum for years to come. If you will finish the bottle next Saturday, or even within a few months, the benefits of that trick are close to none.

- Half a tablespoon of dried orange peel
Place all dry ingredients into a tight sealing pitcher or jug. Fill with rum. Let sit at room temperature, out of direct sunlight, for 2-3 days. Thats it! Youre ready to drink. Once youve made your first batch, you can experiment with things like rosemary, anise seeds, and herbal teas.

Influenced by the Miami tradition of spiking cold coconuts with Guatemalan rum, this unique coconut rum is produced from 4 to 12-year-old rum aged in new, charred American white oak barrels and proofed with fresh, locally-sourced coconut water. Smooth, dry, and utterly tropical, this perfectly balanced bottle is ideal for sipping solo or over a large ice cube.
Coconut Cartel is a smooth, dry, tropical sipping rum. It’s not too sweet and exhibits some similarities to whiskey, says Danielle Zig, CEO and Co-Founder of Coconut Cartel. Rather than using artificial flavorings, Coconut Cartel uses infusions of fresh coconut water during the blending process. This unique process creates very subtle coconut notes in an otherwise traditional oaky and caramel-forward rum, explains Zig, citing that this unique process is what creates the smooth and rich mouthfeel marked by tropical notes.
Zig additionally notes that over the past seven years, Coconut Cartel has helped reactivate approximately 10,000 acres of coconut farmland in Central America, which has contributed to the rise of a whole new agricultural export. Sipping for a good cause? Now thats our idea of drinking responsibly.

Diy Vs Buy: Coconut Rum
I’ve always been a coconut fanatic. When I was a kid, my grandpa would tap a coconut twice with a hammer, and then expertly split it in half over a bowl. The juice that flowed out would be used in that night’s dinner, but the coconut meat was all mine. I got so greedy that he would make up stories about how eating too much coconut would make my bottom so itchy that I’d be unable to sit down long enough to watch television.
Coconut rum always makes me a little sad, because it never lives up to its promise. I want it to taste like a real coconut spiked with rum. But what you usually get is a syrupy mess. It smells good, so I psych myself up with visions of a big, fat coconut filled with rumonly to taste a viscous mouthful of sugar and artificial flavors. I had just about given up on coconut rum when I tried to make it myself. Yes! It turns out that it is possible to have a coconut rum that just tastes like rum and real coconut.
