What Is Absolute Vodka Made From

If Quality Isn’t Exactly What You’re Going For Skyy Vodka Will Do

How Vodka Is Made: Behind The Scenes of Absolut Vodka

We’re slowly starting to inch our way to the best vodka brands on our list. If you’re looking for a vodka that’s pretty decent for mixing, then Skyy Vodka could be the bottle you’re looking for. As noted by Drizly, Skyy Vodka starts at $19.89 for a 1L bottle, so it’s still very much on the affordable side. It has underlying flavors of anise, coriander, and pepper and is a triple-filtered spirit.

This all sounds pretty good, right? Well, some users who took to the reviews on Drizly had less-than-nice things to say. First and foremost, one reviewer explained that they left the vodka in the freezer and it completely froze solid , so that seems a bit questionable if you ask us. Another reviewer put it pretty well when they said, “Skyy is pretty middle of the road. Its selling point is its cheapness.” So is it the worst? No. Is it the best? Not at all. Do with this information what you will.

Absolut Vodka And Smirnoff Ingredient

Just like for almost anything, Vodka also comes from certain ingredients and starting from Absolut. This brand is pretty unique for its effort to only use the ingredient from a certain area and all of their beverage is made from winter wheat that grows in the large Skane region of Sweden which cost more than a hundred thousands of tons for the manufacturing process per year. Winter wheat is planted in September and harvested in August. This certain wheat is said to be high in sugar that makes it perfect for fermentation.

On the other hand, Smirnoff is made from corn which is giving the beverage an upper hand because it means people who are concerned about gluten can enjoy this Vodka as well, knowing that many other brands are made from wheat.

What Is Absolut Vodka

Absolut Vodka can be seen on bar shelves across the world as a premium vodka for creating adventurous, hand-crafted cocktails or simply drinking straight from a glass.

Absolut has a somewhat revolutionary past. Its creator, Lars Olsson Smith, created what was then called Rent Brannvin in response to a monopolized liquor market. It did so well that it made Smith quite wealthy but drove Sweden to monopolize his brand, calling it Absolut Rent Brannvin. From there, a higher end product called Absolut Vodka was introduced as the Vodka of Sweden.

Absolut Vodka is nothing if not unique. Splashing on the scene as a newcomer in the late 1970s, Absolut gained notoriety for its unusually shaped bottle. For those interested in sustainability and environmental responsibility, Absolut takes the cake in that regard as well. From repurposing distillery byproducts as animal food to sourcing all of its wheat from local farms.

Absolut Vodka has made a name for itself from its upstart history, advertising campaigns, and unique approach to the industry. Once an Absolut Vodka hits the glass, it makes its name all over again as a smooth, subtle vodka that can be fashioned in any way.

The Debunker: Is Vodka Made From Potatoes

Absolut Original Vodka

Great news, everyonethe Idaho Potato Commission has named February as its official Potato Lovers’ Month! In the commission’s own words, this is a time to “explore Idaho® Potato versatility from a different and exciting angle.” Some of us in the other forty-nine states sadly don’t get to take all of Potato Lovers’ Month off work, like they probably do in Idaho, but we can celebrate in other ways. For example, we’ve asked Jeopardy!‘s Ken Jennings, who lives in an Idaho-adjacent state, to correct any morsels of our potato knowledge that might be a little half-baked.

The Debunker: Is Vodka Made from Potatoes?

Wine comes from grapes, beer is brewed from barley. And vodka comes from potatoes, right? This was, at least, the received wisdom I grew up with. Perhaps in the Cold War era, it was encouraging to imagine that, while we in the West were sipping on our fancy cognacs and whatnot, the denizens of the Evil Empire had no choice but to distill their grim, brain-fogging tipple from the lowly potato.

In fact, potatoes are neither the original nor the most typical source of vodka. For one thing, the origins of vodka go back to medieval Poland and Russia, centuries before the potato arrived in Europe from the New World. See, vodka can be distilled from anything with enough sugar or starch to produce a fermentable mash. Grains are the most common source, but molasses, beets, and fruit are all possibilities as well.

Pau Maui Vodka Isn’t For Everyone

Pineapple is a controversial fruit. Some people love a piña colada more than life itself. Others can’t stand pineapple on top of pizza, and some find even the scent of the tropical fruit off-putting altogether. So this next vodka might be a winner for some and an absolute loser for others. The Pau Maui Vodka, intermixed with the flavor of pineapple, goes for $19.98 a bottle and is the creation of Mark Nigbur. According to Flaviar, Nigbur and the LeVecke family created a micro-distillery in Maui and went to town, creating the Hali’imale Distilling Company and the Pau Maui spirit in the process.

So how do the reviews for this particular vodka run? A lot of them go in completely different directions, with some being harsher than others. For instance, one customer said that the vodka had a “pretty harsh flavor” and that they preferred using it as a mixing spirit rather than something to drink straight. Another reviewer said that the vodka was “on the low end of average,” and yet another said that it had a “very strong nose curling aftertaste.” So we’ll leave the decision to try this one up to you.

So What Do These Base Materials Do To The Vodka

Although most of the characteristics are stripped after distilling, connoisseurs will tell you that a flavor remains.

Here is what they say:

  • Wheat: leaves a slight pepper, anise and lemon rind flavor
  • Rye: creates a rye bread, nutty flavor
  • Maize/corn: a creamy popcorn & butter flavor
  • Barley: leaves a sweet bread & croissant flavor
  • Potato: determines a creamy mashed potato flavor with vegetal notes
  • Grapes: creates a slight lemon zest flavor

Although Potatoes are still used in vodka production, it is not as common as we everyday folk think – nor is it as desired as such from producers.

As with most products, it depends on what market the brand wishes to appeal to, but personally as a consumer – Id take sweet croissant over vegetal notes any day!

Vodka is made from a variety of diverse methods, from a range of diverse materials, which makes it the versatile & international drink we can enjoy, in many different ways.

So potato or not – Cheers

Or – Twoje zdrowie! .

Has a buttery sweet burn flavour, which is not a true vodka. With this Absolut you can taste all the crap thats left behind and going to make your head hurt in the morning. You pay for advertising not quality. Good vodka has no impurities and theres not much hangover. It doesnt have to be expensive to be good.

Absolut Vodka Essential Facts

Absolut Vodka was first launched in New York in 1979. It soon became the talk of the town, in the US and eventually of the world. But the recipe behind the clean and natural taste of Absolut is actually older than 30 years. So is the 18th century medicine bottle found in an antique store in Stockholm, Sweden that gave inspiration to the iconic Absolut Vodka bottle.Absolut Vodka is a Swedish vodka made exclusively from natural ingredients, and unlike some other vodkas, it doesnt contain any added sugar. In fact, Absolut is as clean as vodka can be. Still, it has a certain taste: Rich, full-bodied and complex, yet smooth and mellow with a distinct character of grain, followed by a hint of dried fruit.

Way too expensive. This vodka is an old gem. Once perceived to be one of the best ever has been smashed by medium priced vodkas. Alot of oil on this vodka and terrible burn. Great to clean my garage floor with but will only enter my mouth for to taste against other vodkasnever to be swallowed.

Named the worlds best gin at the World Gin Awards 2017, the spectacular, handcrafted gin from Hernö Gin has received more awards than any other gin in Europe since production started in 2012.

I have to say: I really dont mind it.Its got a cool bottle: it freezes and pours well. Its SMOOTH. People who like strong tea and coffee, enjoy bitter tastes as part of the experience. So the fact there bitter grain flavor, it adds interest to the drink. I am not a fan of artificial added flavors, but this is part of the traditional drink before it was easy to distill a drink X many times until its 199 proof. The cheapest 750ml vodka here is 19.50$ I am willing to spend 23.50$ for absolute. Since drinks relate to experiences and memories, Id have to say its one of my favorites. Ive had many good times with it.

Typical Alcohol Volume Percentage

As touched on earlier, the minimum ABV for vodka is 37% in Europe and 40% in the USA. However, it can be much higher depending on the distillery and country of origin. For instance, Bulgarian Balkan 176° has 88% ABV. Yet, this is not technically vodka as it hasnt been filtered.

On average, vodka will be between 40 to 45% ABV in order to cater to both European and American markets.

Is Corn Or Potato Vodka Better

Originally, potato vodka was used for medicinal purposes and to fight against cold weather. Potato vodka has a sweet and earthy flavor. It is smooth but ends with a sharper finish. It is also known as healthier vodka. It is sugar-free, gluten-free, and low in carbs.

Whereas, Corn or grain vodka tastes utterly different from potato vodka. It is smooth and gives a slightly sweeter finish. It contains gluten.

Vodka is low in calories. Both potato and grain vodka are made with the same procedure. The only difference is in flavors. Potato vodka is served with ice as it is more flavorful than others. Grain vodka being less flavorful, is used in cocktails or mixed drinks.

This Vodka From Bakon Is Going To Be A Hard Pass

Now for all you Bloody Mary fans out there, this might not sound too terrible, but the second-worst vodka on our list that you should probably avoid at all costs is the bacon-flavored spirit from Bakon Vodka. Yes, bacon-flavored vodka. We love a good piece of bacon, don’t get us wrong, but in vodka form? Absolutely not.

As noted by the Bakon Vodka website, the spirit is ideally used in drinks like a Bloody Mary or a Caesar but if you can just use your classic vodka for those specific drinks, why get a special flavored vodka that you can’t use for all your cocktails? It’s not like you’re going to want to sip on bacon-flavored vodka, let alone use it in a classic mixed drink like a Cosmopolitan .

If you think that we’re being dramatic, we can guarantee you that we aren’t. LA Weekly put Bakon Vodka on their list of the five worst vodkas out there, so we’re pretty confident that you should save your money and skip out on this bottle.

Absolut Vodka Review By Becky

I used it in a Bloody Caesar and I mix strong, even still the taste was still rather good. It was slightly below room temperature the first time I used it. Ive had Caesars made strong with other Vodkas and I found the taste was almost overpowering when it was made as strong as I make it myself. At least once with Smirnoff I couldnt finish the drink. Im definitely sticking by Absolut for Caesars in the future.

What Are The Benefits Of Drinking Vodka

Grey Goose Vodka

Historically, vodka was a medicine much like many of Europes other clear distilled spirits. This notion has actually persisted over the centuries and it is still considered as such by many to this day. In fact, a popular remedy for a cold or cough is ground pepper in a shot of vodka.

Yet, there is some truth to these claims. Firstly, vodka is a natural disinfectant. Therefore, it can be drank to soothe sore throats and tooth ache or even applied topically on injuries.

Furthermore, vodka can help reduce cholesterol, improve circulation, and has been proven to help reduce stress even more than red wine.

Additionally, vodka contains very few impurities. Therefore, its actually considered safer than most spirits. Being a purer spirit, there are reduced side effects from excessive drinking.

While it is still a strong spirit that can cause heavy intoxication, the pains of the morning after are said to be milder than other more flavoursome spirits.

How Does Absolut Pricing Compare

Absolut Vodka Review

Absolut Vodka has made a name for itself as a premium vodka. It is important to compare prices with other vodkas of the same presumed quality. Obviously, there will be a notable price difference between a brand like Absolut, known for its impeccably smooth taste and a lesser brand that can be garnered in a plastic bottle.

When comparing brands of similar quality, or from the same shelf, Absolut comes out on the lower end of the pricing spectrum. As seen below, when compared to the average price of the competitors combined, Absolut Vodka is the more affordable option.

How To Drink Vodka

There are many ways to enjoy vodka but the main thing to ensure is that its enjoyed ice cold. Before drinking vodka or preparing any vodka-based cocktails, store the bottle in the freezer for a few hours.

As alcohol has a much lower freezing point than vodka, theres no need to worry about it getting too cold. Freezing the vodka will remove any harsh flavours and softens the aroma and taste.

If sipping vodka, pour it into a small tumbler for optimum flavour. Swirl it in the glass and take a small sip as the flavours rest on your palate.

There are plenty of popular vodka-based cocktails to enjoy. Some common favourites are the Cosmopolitan, Martini, Bloody Mary, Gimlet and White Russian. Or, keep it simple in a highball glass with a vodka soda or vodka tonic.
