specifically looking for tortuga rum. also, is the limit 2 bottles per adult coming back to the u.s.? is this strictly enforced? will we have to pay taxes?need advice.
We have been all over the Caribbean and always stock up on liquor duty free when we come home. Bring way more than 2 ltrs each and have never had a problem. The most they will do is make you pay duty. I don’t remember the exact amount they charge, but it was minimal. It was worth it if we had to pay , but they never charged us.
My husband and I just bought 5 bottles at Cancun airport. The guys working there said we may have to pay 10% for the 5th bottle, but no one asked for anything.
The duty-free liquor allowance for travelers returning from Mexico is one liter per person, age 21 or over not two liters as previously stated. Do not depend on clerks in the duty free shops for your information on this most of them don’t know our laws.
I suggest that you do not lie about how much liquor you’re bringing back to the USA. You’d be making a false customs declaration, which is a prosecutable offense, to avoid paying a few dollars of duty. Sure, the odds of your being caught and prosecuted are very small, but I wouldn’t care to take that chance, regardless of how small the odds.
