How To Make Mojitos At Home

How Did I Learn To Make The Best Mojitos

How to Make a Mojito Cocktail Home | Pro | Expert

My easy technique comes from a bartender I met when we were on vacation in the Caribbean. He showed me that they prep a mojito simple syrup with mint and lime which ups the flavor in mojitos. You still muddle together some fresh mint and lime the old fashioned way, but adding in that mojito simple syrup elevates the flavor to a new level!

Secret To A Better Mojito

Before now, you may have made mojitos like this: You threw some mint, lime juice, and sugar into a glass and then mashed em up with a wooden spoon, or if you were feeling bartender-y, with a fancy muddler. Then you added a little booze and a lot of soda water, resulting in a sparkling, mint salad in a glass with a hint of rum.

No more. Youre better than that, and your mojitos should be too! The better way to make mojitos takes a little more time, patience, and effort, but is well worth it.

Take a mortar and pestle and slowly crush the mint and sugar with a splash of the rum until you have a very fine paste. After that, add the rest of the rum and let it infuse for a few minutes, then strain the mixture, and top with a bare splash of soda.

The result is a mojito that’s not only cleaner in appearance , but also endlessly more flavorful than any mojito youve previously experienced.

How To Make A Virgin Mojito

  • Place mint leaves and lime juice in a glass and muddle them together. Muddling = mushing them up and crushing the leaves to release the flavor and oils the mint. Use a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon. Or a set of brass knuckles. To each their own.
  • Garnish with lime slices, a sprig of mint, and/or fresh fruit .

Tips For Making The Perfect Mojito

So, how do you make a mojito? Whether youre sticking to the classics or creating different mojito recipes, here are a few tips to crafting the perfect mojito.

    • Always keep your basic proportions the same. Use 1 1/2 oz. white rum to 1/2 lime, or about 1 oz. lime juice, to achieve perfectly balanced flavors.
    • Slap the mint leaves between your hands several times before placing them in the glass. This stimulates the oils and creates maximum flavor transfer to your cocktail.
    • Avoid ripping or tearing mint leaves, as this can create a bitter taste in drinks.
    • Muddle and shake your cocktail with care so as to avoid crushing or ripping your mint leaves and lime.

The Method To Make A Mojito Cocktail At Home:

How to make a MOJITO at Home

Firstly, we shall dictate this as if you have Lime juice & not wedges.

Place the liquid ingredients in the glass, If Lime & Sugar are both liquified, if not & your sugar is still in a solid & granulated stage, stir until the sugar is dissolved into the Rum & lime juice. We do this now in order to not over dilute the ice later.

Mint Leaves next, DO NOT CLAP with them in your hand, like many sources would claim. All you achieve with this step, its making the air smell minty around you, which is a great smell. But thats particles you want in your drink. Not the air.

However, their advice about the mint need a little help isnt wrong. So the best way to do this, is get your 8-10 mint leaves & gently rubbing them within your hand against each other. This causes some slight abrasion between the leaves & creates a far greater effect for your drinks benefit, than the air around the drink. Place all the lives that have been rubbed against each other into the glass.

Now youre ready to add ice.

Crushed ice is on the recipe for every single document you can find. If you have any to access, easy peasy. If not, you can use cubed, we will cover more of this later.

If youre passionate about crushed being essential & only have cubed A Rolling pin, a Carrier bag & an outlet of aggression will be of great assistance to you.

    Use Rum You’d Drink Straight

Using a flavorless rum only makes the drink taste like a boozy, mint soda, David Mor, beverage manager, Cindys, Chicago, says. You dont have to blow your budget on a top-shelf bottle, but you should use a rum you like the taste of straight. The sugar, citrus, and mint adorn the spirit in this drink, they dont mask it.

Mojitos traditionally call for white rum, but you can certainly swap in dark, aged varieties. I like to use a dark rum to add a little bit more flavor, Kenneth McCoy, chief creative officer, Public House Collective, NYC, says. Whatever age statement or flavor profile you choose, remember that the spirit will be the most powerful flavor in your drink.

    What About Lemon Lime Soda

Some restaurants and at home recipes use lemon lime soda to avoid needing to squeeze fresh lime juice or make simple syrup. Personally I love the taste of the fresh citrus, but if you prefer using a lemon lime soda, you can replace the lime juice, sweetener, and soda water with lemon lime soda. Then just garnish with some fresh limes. Use diet lemon lime soda for less calories.

Ive pretty squeeze some fresh lime juice and then Ive got soda water as well.

3: You want to start by grabbing your highball glass. add probably about eight fresh mint leaves. I prefer quite a lot of mints in my mojitos, so I like to put some in that whole.

Remove a little bit of the stem, tear a few leaves as well, and just give it a bit of a clap! This gets a release of some of the oils.

4: Add a double shot, around 60 mls of white rum and I want to add 30 mls. I actually had just a little bit under so probably more like about 25mls of sugar otherwise its too sweet and then 30 mls of fresh lime juice and then you want to top that with a lot of ice.

    • Fresh fruit is a welcome addition to most cocktails and mojitos are no different. You can make strawberry, pineapple, watermelon, raspberry, or mango mojitos easily. How To Make A Pitcher Of Mojitos

To make mojitos for a larger group, you’ll need to make a few adjustments. This recipe will serve about 8 people. You can make the honey simple syrup in advance, but these are best when the mint is muddled fresh right before serving.

For a more make-ahead version, make mint flavored simply syrup and then simply add some fresh mint to garnish when serving. Instructions below to make mint flavored simple syrup.

    • 1 cup fresh lime juice
    • about 4 cups ice
    • about 4 cups soda water

Directions: Make the honey simply syrup by combining the honey and water in a microwave safe dish, Heat for 1.5-2 minutes until bubbling, Remove and stir well to dissolve the honey into the water. Let cool for about 5 minutes. Add the mint leaves and lime juice. Use a large wooden spoon to muddle everything together. Add the rum and give it a good stir. Then add the ice and top with soda water. Stir one more time and garnish with fresh mint and limes.

For make ahead mojitos, you’ll need to make mint simple syrup since the muddled mint browns if not used right away. Start by boiling the water. Add the mint and honey to the water and give it a good stir until the honey dissolves. This works with sugar as well. Let steep for 15 minutes and strain off the mint.

The prepare the lime juice, which will last in the fridge for up to a week. Then simply assemble when it is time to serve.

Is It Important Which Rum I Use In A Mojito At Home:

    Confusingly, Yes & No.

No its not important in the sense that we have already written to use White rum. All white rum, is simply the same. What makes a Rum different is its Ageing, its Spicing, its flavour additions to what is in effect, white rum.

So at the base level spirit, it does not matter which brand you buy. Be it Bacardi, or Havana etc. It is a chemically identical product.

Yes its important when you want to start changing it up a bit.

Some prefer an aged rum in their Mojito, some prefer to use the Spiced rum you can get, others the flavoured types. All of this is fine, you can use all these things.

But our only advise when changing these things up & mixing about ingredients, is that less is more.

If you want the spiced rum, only change the spiced rum, if you want to add Strawberry etc. Only add the strawberry as using more premium or specialist rums would be lost the second you begin adding the other flavours.

    Youre done.
