Casamigos: George Clooney And Tequila
George Clooney is an Oscar-winning actor and a silver screen legend, not to mention an activist, charity-worker and humanitarian. But what you might not know is that he also happens to be a top-notch entrepreneur. Aside from his extensive film work, Clooney made headlines in summer 2017 when his tequila brand, Casamigos, was sold for a whopping $1 billion. That made Clooney the years highest paid actor without setting foot in front of a camera!
But how did Casamigos come about? The company originally began as a join venture between Clooney and his close friend Rande Gerber, after a discussion about how they would both love a tequila that you could drink without running the risk of a hangover. But on a wider level, it was about deconstructing the nature of prestige branding for tequila making luxury and affordability go hand in hand.
Clooney and Gerber had been close friends for thirty years, but it was not until around 2010-2011 that they came up with the original concept for their business venture. In many ways, it is the friendship between the two drinking buddies which has informed the nature of Casamigos. Take the name for instance- it is borrowed from the plot of land in Mexico on which the two men own properties. Literally translated from the Spanish, it means house of friends. And during their time together in Mexico- during which they shared plenty of meals with friends- the pair sampled a whole host of tequilas.

Toby Keith Wild Shot Mezcal

The American country singer opted for mezcal with his foray into the tequila craze. Each bottle comes complete with a small worm, which Keith insists must be ingested.
Keith has written about Mexico in his songs, and was keen to bring mezcal to a wider audience. He said at the time: The history of mezcal is magical to me. It dates back to the 16th Century: warriors celebrating the defeat of their enemies. It is part of my life.
Carlos Santana Casa Noble

Santana, who hails from Jalesco, does have some sort of connection to Tequila, which is more than can be said for many of the celebrities producing it. Sanatana became part owner of the Case Noble brand in 2011.
Santana said when the partnership was announced: When I visited the distillery, I immediately felt spiritually connected to the Hermosillo family and Casa Noble.
The triple-distilled Tequila has won gold at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition in 2007 and 2008.
Constellation Brands has closed a deal to buy Casa Noble in 2014, working with Santana as an equity partner.

How Is Casamigos Mezcal Made
Crafting mezcal is a labor-intensive endeavor:
- Fully riped espadin agaves are chosen ensuring the sweetness of the spirit. An espadin takes up to 8 years to fully mature.
- Agave hearts are split and laid to cook for up to 6 days in an underground oven using wood and volcanic rock as fuel.
- Agaves are crushed with a large tahona stone pulled by a mule.
- Crushed agaves are fermented for up to 8 days in covered copper pot stills.
- Casamigos Mezcal is later double distilled.
- The distillate is rested in glass containers for 2 months. This short aging period smoothens the mezcal by removing rogh edges.

The Rocks premium tequila brand has been flying off store shelves ever since its launch last March. Now, fans of Dwayne Johnson and tequila alike can purchase Teremana online and get it delivered to their door.
The ultra-premium highlands tequila uses all the beverage buzz words, like small batch production, and distilled in handmade copper pot stills. But beyond the hype, its a smooth, easy to drink option naturally sweetened with the rich aroma of mature agave plants, with a clean finish.

Clooneys Casamigos Tequila Becomes A Million Case Brand
Casamigos, the top-end Tequila George Clooney and Rande Gerber sold to drinks giant Diageo in 2017 for US$1 billion, has become a one million case brand.
Founded in 2013 by Clooney, Gerber and their business partner Mike Meldman, Casamigos hit the million case sales a year milestone at the end of 2020, appearing for the first time in The Spirits Businesss Brand Champions report this year.
Meaning house of friends in Spanish, the brand started out as a pet project to enjoy with friends and family, but quickly earned the celebrity seal of approval, becoming the fastest-growing super premium Tequila brand in the US.
The small batch ultra-premium Tequilas within the Casamigos range are made from hand-selected 100% Blue Weber agave grown in the red clay soils of Mexicos Jalisco Highlands for a minimum of seven years.
The blanco expression is rested for two months and is crisp and clean with hints of citrus, vanilla and sweet agave, while the resposado is aged for seven months, leading to a soft Tequila with hints of caramel and cocoa and a smooth finish.
The añejo meanwhile, is aged for 14 months in oak, resulting in a pure and refined expression with soft caramel and vanilla notes with subtle hints of spice.

Tequila Isnt The Only Drink On The Menu
In 2018, Casamigos added a joven mezcal to its lineup. Apart from being its only non-tequila offering, the mezcal is Casamigos sole release that isnt bottled in clear glass. Gerber was responsible for its matte-black design, and each bottle is finished using a special rubbing process to make it unique.

How To Drink Casamigos Tequila
A premium tequila deserves to be enjoyed sip by sip, so wave goodbye to throwing it back with a squeeze of lime and a pinch of salt if youre drinking from a bottle of Casamigos. Youll also want to enjoy it properly if you dont want to lose respect from the nearest Mexican. Youll want a copita shaped glass to enjoy your tequila.
The benefit of this shape comes from its expansive middle, which allows the aromatic compounds of the spirit to gently waft towards your nose. Failing that, you can also drink your tequila from a wine glass. If you are determined to shoot it, look for an authentically Mexican shot glass: taller, thinner and known as a caballito shot glass which translates to a little horse.
In Mexico, tequila tends to be served chilled and immediately. Elsewhere in the world, its often served a little closer to room temperature for optimum aroma and taste benefits. If youre new to the world of tequila, youll probably prefer it chilled for a more mild effect.
And, if youve already got limes and salt at the ready, youll want to use them sparingly. Opt for the smaller limes, which have more intense flavours, and add salt even more sparingly. You want it to complement the tequila flavours, rather than overshadow them.

One of the most-awarded bottles on our list, Danos Añejo Tequila is aged 18 months in virgin French white oak barrels and produced using 100% agave at a family-owned distillery that dates back to 1840. A small sip reveals aromas of roasted agave with woody notes, before the tequila opens up with hints of caramel, coconut and oak.
Founded in Steamboat Springs, Colorado in 2018, Danos Tequila just won Best in Class Añejo at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Danos also won the Gold Medal in the 2019 Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America Tasting Competition, and the Double Gold and Gold in the 2018 SIP Awards.

George Clooney Created Casamigos Tequila Because He Loved It So Much
While drinkers everywhere now enjoy the taste of Casamigos tequila, Gerber said that it wasnt always meant to be that way.
As you do in Mexico, we would drink a lot of tequila, the business mogul said. Wed go out to bars and restaurants and bartenders would recommend them. Some were good, some not so good, and some expensive. There came a point where George turned to me and said, Why dont we just make our own, one thats perfect for us?
Our tequila wasnt intended for the public we made it strictly to drink and share with friends, he continued. But after word got out, we knew we had something special.
Gerber revealed that it took over 700 different samples and formulas before the team agreed on a taste they all liked.

Its an easy drinking spirit but if tasted blind would be hard to guess its a tequila. Although not as artificial as the reposado, there is no agave. Time in the barrel adds another layer so its not extremely sweet like the reposado, just very sweet.
This is the most artificial of the 3. Nose and taste are extremely sweet, that cupcake frosting of the blanco intensifies to 11. Mouthfeel is the same across all 3.

The Casamigos Production Process
Tequila, in general, is very labor-intensive, and thus the process deserves complete respect for the product.
The agaves cactus plant is a product of Jalisco, Mexico. They are grown in their rich clay soil and are used as a base for tequila.
When the label on a bottle says 100% agave, it means that no additional sugars were used during the fermentation process to create the alcohol.
The sweetness it provides is 100% from the agave fruit. It results in the alcohol having more body, more flavor, and a stronger agave aroma and flavor.
In the case of Casamigos, the agaves are aged for 7-9 years before harvesting and only 100% Blue Weber agaves are used.
Their agave piñas, also known as the heart of the agave, are roasted in traditional brick ovens for 72 hours, opposed to the usual 7-hour steam.
Casamigos fermentation process is 80 hours and is ultimately their identity stamp for the unique flavor.
The special proprietary yeast used is a blend preferred by their Master Distiller. Its purpose is to assist with the consistency and flavor of the Casamigos tequila.

Brits Are Turning To Tequila
Gerber added that Casamigos has been “incredible” growth in the UK, where beforehand it “wasn’t that big of a thing.”
“George and Amal have a beautiful home in the UK now, and he wanted to make sure he could drink it there,” Gerber said. “Even though Brits aren’t known as tequila drinkers, a lot of whisky drinkers and vodka drinkers have switched to drinking Casamigos.”
Gerber added that it’s “not your typical tequila” as it is low in calories and made from 100% Blue Weber Agaves, which he says has helped it catch on with both men and women.
“The authenticity of everything that we’ve done, from making it ourselves to naming it, has been an extension of who we are and our lifestyle,” Gerber said. “It’s been a fun thing for us to do.”
While the pair sold their homes in Mexico shortly before we spoke to Gerber, he said they were looking at building new ones in the same place. Who knows what idea their next abodes will inspire.

El Tesoro may be owned by Beam Suntory, the Japanese company responsible for Suntory Whisky, but this tequila is still made from traditional methods and local agave. The Añejo variety is aged in American oak bourbon barrels for up to three years, which results in a nice blend of warm agave and oak flavors. Casamigos Mezcal Joven Review
Joven is an unaged mezcal that never entered in contact with an oak barrel, hence the transparent color a Joven mezcal is equivalent to a silver tequila. It comes in an attractive black crystal bottle that stands out from the rest.
Aroma: fruity and herbal with a faint scent of smoke and roasted agave.
Palate: Extremely smooth as the characteristic smoke of mezcal is practically imperceptible.
You can sip either neat or rocks. It can also be mixed in cocktails although a bit pricey for such affairs.
Dwayne The Rock Johnson Mana

In his downtime between battling giant flying wolves in Rampage and his jungle-based antics in Jumanji, The Rock has somehow found time to launch a Tequila brand, and the whole spirits-drinking world is rather excited as he prepares to debut it this year.
In 2018, his current manager and ex-wife Dany Garcia submitted a trademark application for a new Tequila company.
Its called Mana, which in his native Polynesian culture means a supernatural, spiritual essence in human, animals and objects. Heres hoping his Tequila is an equally potent spirit.
Johnson filed documents to trademark the name Mana, but unfortunately this was rejected that November for being too similar to other products bearing the name.
However, that hasnt dampened the stars spirits . He shared an Instagram post in April last year to show off batches of Tequila he was sampling straight out of our barrels in Mexico.

Now, the new brand is called Teremana. It was developed by Siete Bucks Spirits, which is led by its founder Dwayne Johnson, co-founder Dany Garcia, and co-founders and spirit industry veterans Jenna Fagnan and Ken Austin.
Teremana is an ultra-premium small batch, highlands tequila apparently, crafted in a small town in Jalisco, Mexico. It will be available in Blanco and Reposado in three sizes 375ml, 750ml and 1lr.
